Fed about the wind:

“You get to a point where you're just happy to make shots and not look ridiculous. It's that bad,” said Federer of the swirling winds. “There is also no way to practice in these conditions. It's all a mindset. It's footwork…It was difficult, but I accept that. He played in an incredible way. He has incredible abilities on clay. I knew that ahead of time.”

I found a reason to watch the women's final.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Man, I have really fallen behind on women's tennis. I've always followed the ATP Tour much more than the WTA Tour, but I followed it enough to know most of the names. I've never heard of either one of the women's finalists until today.

ATP and WTA are like extremes. One has a bunch of old players at the top it can't seem to get rid of, the other can't seem to get anyone at the top for more than a few months.

I wouldn't consider Barty a flash in the pan,she is just someone who can always be hit off the court by Sloane, Amanda,Osaka,Halep,Kvitova etc.She will be consistently in the top 20 the next few year's but her chances of winning a Slam will always be dependent on the draw opening up or someone else having a bad day. Full credit to her the last 2 weeks for taking advantage and not folding once her draw had some upsets and opened up with youngsters and bad clay courters.

What an absolute shitshow. Not only is the match into a fifth set, as I feared. they are now suspended again due to weather. As if Nadal needed any more help to win tomorrow. The FO should be absolutely shamed of itself for their scheduling yesterday.

I thought once the US Open built their roof over Center Court, all the GS venues had a roof. Guess not.

In all fairness to them, clay is easily the safest of the major surfaces to play on in the rain. They regularly keep playing in drizzle and light rain that would have forced a stoppage on either grass or hard courts, mostly due to the lines in the case of hard courts. OTOH, it can be risky because I also think it takes longer to dry than a hard court if it does get exposed to heavier rain. But yeah, I think it is time that RG did this.

Congrats Thiem. Sorry you are going to get shellacked tomorrow. His win earlier this year in Barcelona means dick. The score tomorrow will probably be almost exactly the same as last year (4-3-2).

RG is getting a retractable roof next year, at least on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Not only that, but people didn't even notice Philippe-Chatrier has been rebuilt. As soon as the tournament ended last year, they had to demolish 80+% of it, and rebuild it in time for this year's tournament. Only the roof is missing, and will be ready for 2020. And renovations to the entire grounds will be on-going right up to the summer Olympics in 2024.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Congrats to Ash Barty, well done mate!

Also congrats to 16 y/o Leylah Annie Fernandez from Montreal! She's the first ever Canadian to win a French Open junior title and she did it without dropping a set.

And my prediction that one of Nadal or Djokovic would not make the final came through. But yeah, poor Thiem is gonna get obliterated. They should have moved the final to Monday.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Does Thiem even have a chance to take a set off of Nadal after playing for what - four days in a row - whilst Nadal gets to rest and laugh at home?

Don't recall garbage like this happening REGULARLY in any other slam.

Nadal -440
Thiem +350

Even laying the heavy odds, have to like Nadal there.

I'll be attending for a couple of days next year. Glad it will be done by then, just in case.

Ash Barty was ranked something like #600 just a little over two years ago. She had put tennis on the backburner to play another sport. The other is a teenager with a thin resume.

For me, she was just another name in the draw that looked familiar until last year's U.S. Open. Probably the only reason I noticed her then is because they aired some of her fourth round match with Pliskova (which she lost handily) and because she was Australian. Quality women's Aussie players not named "Stosur" have been rather thin in the ground for many years now so when one bubbles up it is a little noteworthy. That said, before this tournament, Barty had only been in the second week of a major twice, and losing 4R and then losing in the quarters is hardly lighting the world on fire.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Thiem is giving about as good as he is getting so far, but these are just the sorts of long, exhausting points that he is just not going to have the legs for over five sets.

Win or lose, it is a good day for the Thiem/Mladenovic power couple. She won the women's doubles with Babos earlier today.

Watching the live odds on this match is hilarious. Nadal opened around -500. Was down to -250 when broken in the 1st. Now.-1100.

Yeah, the odds of Nadal losing the first set should have been at least decent. That would have been a tempting bet for me, actually, just based on the odds. Of course, now that Nadal as actually won the first set, I would gladly bet on this being over in straights.

That said, Thiem has already exceeded by expectations with his play and energy today.

Great set by Thiem.

Hovering around Nadal -300 now.
