He got more from his talent than just about any tennis player I can remember. If he had played in another era, I'm positive he would have broken through and picked up a Slam or two. An absolute grinder with an incredible work ethic.

Yup, they should put his picture next to "maximizing your abilities".

If tennis HOF was like MLB,NBA,NFL etc He would be a 1 st Ballot Hall Of Famer considering how many matches he won and his longetivity in the top 10. As it stands now, only way he would make tennis HOF is if he becomess a top coach or commentator post playing career.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Number 1200

Roger Federer completed the 1,200th match win of his illustrious career in dramatic fashion on Thursday for a place in the Mutua Madrid Open quarter-finals.

The Swiss superstar saved two match points to become the second player in the Open Era to hit the milestone, joining American Jimmy Connors (1,274), with a 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory over No. 15 seed Gael Monfils of France in two hours.
Forget the 1st set, the last 2 were very entertaining. But I don't think he will beat Thiem.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Rafa played 2 matches today (because of rain yesterday). He lost... 2 games... total. I think he's finally getting his clay groove.

Oh, and...

Nick Kyrgios is once again in the headlines after the Australian was disqualified from the Italian Open on Thursday for launching a chair onto the court and storming off during his match with Casper Ruud.
He'll get suspended. Shame, he should be banned, permanently.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Nick has some mental issues and it's going untreated because tennis isn't a team sport.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Djokovic win the French. He's probably the favorite since Nadal just hasn't looked like the same dominant clay force deep into tournaments against top competition.

They should probably be co-favorites. But we'll get a better idea if they meet in the Rome final.

Djoker v. Nadal LIV

What a rivalry.

Also - Nicky Kyrgios needs some serious mental intervention. Was a fan - but not after his recent default and verbal tirade against Nadal and Djokovic. Dude needs help and fast.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Well anti-climactic, that.

Djoko looked worn out with all the time he spent on court compared to Rafa - surprised he was able to win a set. Complete domination by the Rafa as he opened the bakery and gave Nole not only a bagel but a bread stick as well. Roland-Garros will indeed be quite the tourney for these two.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I know the Nadal fans are happy but Djokovic made a ton of unforced errors he likely won't make again if they happen to meet at the French. Djokovic kept dumping the poorest-looking drop shots into the net. Nadal even stopped running them down since Djokovic kept missing them.

Diego and Del Potro won that match for Nadal the prior two days. That match with Diego was punishing claycourt tennis for three sets.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Rafa played about 60% of Djokovic. These two have to be favorites at RG but I don't think both will make the final. Plus, age is the enemy of consistency so a poor performance is more likely.

Small tournament but Felix won his semi and will face Benoit Paire in the Lyon final.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Fed won his 400th grand slam match, beating Casper Ruud in 3 sets. When Fed made his debut at RG in 1999, Casper's father Christian was in the draw. Casper was 5 months old.

Kudos to Goffin for taking a set off Rafa, who looked... beatable. But his level tends to go up as the tournament progresses, so this doesn't mean much.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

The first professional tennis match (non exhibition anyway) I ever went to in person was Agassi vs. Casper Ruud's father. Makes me feel extra old.

Down goes Osaka, although I don't think the odds of her keeping her burgeoning Slam streak going in Paris were very high anyway.

I hadn't really been paying attention much to the FO so far, and I just glanced at the draw. Nadal looks destined to win his 12th. Yawn.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Also couldn't help but notice that Zverev is up to his usual schtick of playing 5 setters against guys he should be putting away easily.
The guy is so talented but cardio and endurance is always going to be an issue with his build, and if he can't get through the first 4 or 5 rounds of a Slam comfortably (mostly 3 set wins), he's never going to win one. He always runs out of gas by the time he reaches the quarters or semis

At this stage, if I had to choose, I'd pick Djokovic.

Yup, as would I. But that we seem likely to end up with another Djokovic/Nadal final is sufficiently yawn-worthy for me, regardless of who wins. There are still some opportunities for drama here, obviously. I never count out Wawrinka when he is playing well. Fognini can absolutely win this as well, however unlikely. Can Tsitipas finally break through? If this were not clay, you'd have to give DelPo a chance as well.

What I would bet on is this: Either Djoko or Nadal will make the final and win it.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Stan beats Tsitsipas in 5+ hours, 8-6 in the 5th. One of the best matches of the year. He faces Fed next, who dispatched Mayer in less than 2 hours. Better get in that ice bath Stan.

Not to mention what I would characterize as a mental block when he plays Fed. He's 0 for his last 6 against him and 3-22 lifetime, with his last win coming in Paris four years ago.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Yeah, Stan is the better matchup for Fed. But unless Tsitsipas could have beaten Fed in 3, he was toast. Young 20 y/o legs just can't grind it out in consecutive long matches in slams.

And Thiem is pissed at good ol' Serena:

Angry Dominic Thiem leaves conference room because of Serena Williams

Thiem was forced to leave the main press conference room as Serena Williams was next. The American did not want to wait for a too long time after her loss to Sofia Kenin and so Thiem had to end the presser. He was angry. "I am not a junior player anymore", he said.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

As much as it is easy to assume the worst based on her history of selfish behavior, I doubt Serena did anything wrong here. The FO has already come out and taken the blame on this, and I think they are mostly being truthful. Serena's upset was by far the biggest FO news story of the day, after all. Also, keep in mind that the players are required to do these post-match press briefings. I suspect that very few of them actually enjoy doing them. Here is my guess:

1. They told Serena they wanted to put her in press room 1 but that she would have to wait since Thiem was in there.
2. Serena said that she didn't want to wait and that they should just use the smaller press room 2.
3. The FO officials, knowing that room 2 was probably too small for the number of reporters, kicked Thiem out of 1 and put Serena in there.
4. Someone tells Thiem that "Serena didn't want to wait", which was true but highly misleading, leading to his comments about her after the fact.

It seems highly implausible that Serena would want to answer questions from as many reporters as possible about her unexpected loss.
