Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Felix went from 104 to 58. Beat Brit Norrie (48th) 6-2, 6-3 in 1st round at Indian Wells. As impressive as he has been on clay, I expect him to be even better on hard because of his tool kit. But he gets Tsitsipas in the 2nd, great test of where Felix's game is at.

Well I guess he remembered he never lost to Tsitsipas in the juniors because he just beat him again, 6-4, 6-2. His game is so rock solid, impressive for an 18 y/o these days:

Watching Barbara Andreescu earlier, and I think she might be the first 00's born person to win a Grand Slam. Btwn her and Felix the next 15 years will be a great one for Canadian tennis

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Djoker loses to very capable but perennial underachiever German Kohlschreiber in straight sets. Djoko looked off but Kohli played very well and credit to him. Interestingly, the world number one continues to find success in doubles - pairing with temperamental Italian world number two, Fabio Fognini. At this point, based on form and draw, this looks like Federer's tourney to lose at this point in time.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Yeah, so much for Djokovic winning all the tournaments this year. This loss (didn't see it) is a little odd because that high bouncing medium/slow surface is perfect for Djokovic and a bit slow for attackers like Kohlschreiber.

Fed's tough road (Wawrinka/Nishikori/Nadal/Djokovic) evaporated in one day. He beat Stan in 59 min., Nishikori and Djokovic lost. Rafa is also looking good but hasn't faced anyone of note.

Good job Shapo beating Cilic.

Felix lost in the 3rd set tiebreak against Nishioka. Learning curve baby!

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Djokovic looked sick from the moment he was on the court. He had his camp rush him a bottle of something during the second set for energy and fluids. Kohlschreiber made it a physical match and Djokovic simply wasn't prepared to hit toe-to-toe with him on that day.

Rafael Nadal v. Roger Federer XXXIX!

Hopefully Nadal isn't still bothered with whatever was nagging him during his competitive straight-set win over Khachanov.

Rafa pulled out. It will be Fed vs Thiem in the final.

Thiem v. Federer stands at 2-2 Head-to-Head. However, on hardcourts, Thiem has not beaten Federer. Will be a competitive final tomorrow, I believe.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I should have talked about the other Canadian 18 y/o. Bianca Andreescu just rode a wild card all the way to a Masters 1000 title.

Canadian Bianca Andreescu won the BNP Paribas Open title with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over World No. 8 Angelique Kerber.

CHAMPION!

Bianca Andreescu wins the #BNPParibasOpen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over Angelique Kerber. Unbelievable.#BiancaRising? #BiancaRisen. pic.twitter.com/YS9kIGFY0o

Andreescu is the first wild card on the WTA tour to win at Indian Wells and the first Canadian to win a title in a WTA Premier Tournament.
The dawn of Canadian tennis domination. Resistance is futile.

Awesome win for Thiem against Federer. Thiem was beating the hell out of the ball with astounding accuracy. A well-deserved victory. Who would have thought his first big title would not have been on clay?

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I really question some of Fed's mindless net rushing against Thiem. This surface is also terrible for drop shots, I'm not sure why Fed decided to pull them out near the end of a match.

Me, because that surface at Indian Wells was basically clay you can't slide on. That court was way too slow for Fed to attack efficiently, and he coudn't keep up with Thiem from the baseline, especially movement wise. I give credit to Thiem though, especially in crunch time in that 3rd set, he didn't blink and kept being aggressive. Well done.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Indian Wells was playing super slow and the ball was bouncing very high - as high as I've ever seen on an American outdoor hardcourt. Thiem's victory says more about Federer's game these days than it does his own on hardcourts.

Miami draw is out and could be a Wawrinka v. Federer 3rd round. Federer with a 22-3 H2H against Wawrinka. Likely will give Wawrinka an even greater pigeon label come Monday.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Another 3rd round in a Masters for Felix, and he still had to qualify because while his current ranking is 52, it was 103 at the deadline a few weeks ago. Thiem should win so I can't wait to see how Felix will fare against him.

Radu Albot - a very likeable player. Pushed Federer to the limit.

More like Federer looked putrid for nearly two sets. He was spraying errors everywhere. I've never seen him hit so far out against inferior competition.

Yeah, Fed is lucky he got out of that one because he was awful.

And I must have jinxed Thiem because he lost to Hurkacz

Andreescu beats Kerber again and the German showed rather poor sportsmanship:

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Felix in the quarters. Beat Basilashvili (17) 7-6, 6-4. It's amazing how consistent and mentally strong he is at his age. Gets Coric (11) next. Hopefully Denis joins him in the quarters, plays Tsitsipas tonight.

And Andreescu retired from her match against Kontaveit with the same shoulder injury that has been bothering her in previous matches. Hardly surprising since teens aren't used to play that much and she had already played more matches in 2019 than anyone else in the WTA.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Doubt it. He's far more talented than Young. Heck at 18, he's better than any other Next Gen guy at that age. There's been hype surrounding him since he was 14 (youngest Challenger winner, etc...) but it was mostly "controlled hype", i.e. expectations were always high but he was never pushed too fast. Tennis Canada always joke that "they tried to keep him a secret".

I mean he could always get bored with tennis/get injuries/max out rapidly or whatever, but he's a legit, very high level tennis talent. Some might say a generational talent.

And he's a great kid from a "normal" family. We've all heard of horror stories about "tennis parents".
