Simply amazing men's doubles final that went so long they had to postpone the women's doubles final until tomorrow. Wimbledon did it right, opening up Centre Court to people still on the grounds in the fifth set so a lot of people with ground passes got an extra thrill.

Yup, awesome match and a first slam title for Colombia. I was actually waiting for the women's double since it features a Canadian but I ended up watching almost all 5 hours of the men's match.

Poor Mahut. That man got roughed up and didn't even get the win to show for it. On the other hand, he already has a career slam in doubles and it was indeed great to see the seal get broken for Colombia. I assume you are aware that Robert Farah was born in Montreal?

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Yeah, poor Mahut kept getting dinged.

Nope! Didn't know about Farah being born here!

Oh well. Especially heartbreaking to see him get so close, to have 40-15 on his own serve for the title, and come up short. At least it wasn't Nadal.

Brilliant match. Fed played better overall but Djokovic was steadier in key moments (tie breaks, down match points). At that level, when you have opportunities, you have to take them.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Djokovic is an absolute legend. Two championship points down and still wins. Now the THIRD time he's done this against Federer in at least the semi-final stage of a Slam. I really didn't care who won but am pleased by the result because of the highly one-sided crowd. To see them so deflated really made my damn afternoon. What a match.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

That was one of the greatest finals in Wimbledon history - and, of course, the first with a fifth set tiebreaker. That was literally a historic match.

I was disappointed that Djokovic won the match (as an older guy I'm always rooting for the older player, plus I love Roger's professionalism and dedication to the game), but it was simply amazing. Roger's got nothing to be ashamed of, at almost 38 he put up an amazing fight to nearly win Wimbledon, and it took a historic effort from Djokovic to beat him.

Djokovic basically telling the world he is gunning for all the records by saying he's going to try and play until at least Roger's age.

Friggin' ESPN. They committed to airing the women's doubles final and the first set is already over and they have shown exactly zero of it. They didn't even start showing it online until halfway through the first set.

Edit: And after the first set was already over, they finally put it on.

Still sick to my stomach for Fed. 2 championship points, on your serve...

Great doubles match. Alas, the Canadian came up short but a wonder fortnight for Strycova.

Was surprised to find out that Gaby Dabrowski is only 5'9" since she towered over the other three women on the court.

What a match. I came in with Fed serving to win and saw nearly a full set after that.

Oh, and despite the quality of the match, a 5 hour match on slow ass grass is still idiotic. This isn't grass court tennis. This further homogenization of surfaces pisses me off. We now have long rallies on grass and USO courts slower than the AO...

Many players this time around blamed the heavy ball more than the surface at Wimbledon.

The problem is that virtually no one plays serve-and-volley any more, outside of a few guys that are far more serve than volley. Just fifteen years ago, you always had a few specialists that would surprise at Wimbledon and make the quarterfinals playing it. I think the Slams are trying to engineer slower surfaces during the Big Three era to ensure their matches deep into the second week are the type we saw today - long and drawn out.

Longer matches - more commercials.

The Wimbledon crowd has become quite embarrassing whenever Federer plays and they also don't particularly like Djokovic. About the only Slam crowd that treats Djokovic decently are the Australians.

As for the match, Federer continues to surprise me with how well he plays deep into a Slam, given his age. It's also significant to realize he's playing so much differently than he did ten years ago - he relies far more on his serve and backhand than he did at his absolute peak. In fact, his forehand has become quite erratic against top competition.

Djokovic was probably outplayed by Federer when all is said and done, but played well enough in the crucial moments to "manage" a victory. I don't feel sorry for Federer. He now knows what it feels like to be Andy Roddick in 2009, when Federer beat Roddick for the title but probably wasn't the better player that day.

The loss feels like a huge blow to Federer's chances at keeping the all-time Slam record. Djokovic more or less confirmed after the match he's going to keep playing for several years and there's likely only one thing on his mind, winning the most Slams. Federer is very likely to also lose the most weeks at #1 record within the next year or two.

But even if Djokovic catches Fed, he'll never get the respect he deserves:

I hope my Fed superfan sis-in-law is ok. Not only did he lose to her Lex Luthor (she hates Djokovic), but she volunteers at the Rogers Cup (despite living 2 hours away) and he cancelled Montreal. Tough Sunday.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I caught the Tennis Channel replay of the Fed-Djokovic final and they had a small sit-down interview with Djokovic after his win. He looked exhausted and it felt like the first time I've heard the "real" Djokovic come out in a press interview. He said going in he knew that the crowd would be heavily against him. The match reminded him a little of the 2011 US Open, when he came back to win facing match points against Federer.

I can remember in the not too distant past where Wimbledon was basically a bandbox. Serve and maybe a 1 or 2 shot rally and we were done. I think the final had a 38 shot rally.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

It's funny, Djokovic reminds me of Ivan Lendl a little in terms of on court personality.

I hated Lendl with a passion. I dislike Djokovic much less, but he's not a real likable guy. I can see why crowds don't root for him much.
