I'm so excited for this season

Yeah the Warriors will probably win it all, but the top 3 teams in the East battling it out and spots 3-8 in the West should be a blast.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

Despite the Warriors being the overwhelming favorites for the past few years, each season has been compelling, at least to me as a basketball fan.

You had the Warriors dominating the 2014 regular season, facing off against Lebron, who returned to the Cavs, but was missing both Love and Irving by the end of the series.

2015 you had the same dominant Warriors losing a 3-1 lead to the same Cleveland team, now at full strength. This directly resulted in Durant leaving OKC, despite battling them to a seven game series in the WCF.

2016 had the now dominant Warriors but Westbrook leading the league in scoring and averaging a triple double and Harden almost matching him. Cousins gets traded for trash and teams up with Anthony Davis.

2017 had the Kyrie drama, the makings of what looked like a Celtic superteam before injuries demolished them, the 76ers rising up, the Celtics still showing their worth by (mostly) dominating the East with young players and superb coaching, and Lebron James still rising above all of them. And that was just the East, with George/Melo/Westbrook and CP3/Harden teaming up in the West, the latter taking GS to seven games and losing without CP3. The trades were just insane: Blake Griffin, Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Oladipo, Carmelo Anthony, Isaiah Thomas (twice), Kyrie, Bledsoe, CP3 all changed teams.

For all the complaints about GS winning being a foregone conclusion, I feel like the majority of the teams are either in contention or have something to hope for for the future. This year we already have Lebron in LA surrounded by a young nucleus, Kawhi forcing a trade, the Celtics getting Hayward and Kyrie back, Cousins further stacking the Warriors, Melo joining the Rockets, the 76ers seeing what they have in last year's number one pick and the implosion of Minnesota. I'm excited to see what around a dozen teams look like in these first few weeks.

Super excited for the season. Yes, being a Celtics fan is lots of fun these days, but I also think the NBA is better than it has ever been, and as a basketball fan since I was a small kid, that's awesome to see.

The Celtics hope they can be bad enough to earn the #2 draft pick.

They haven't been the worst team, though, not as long as the Suns are around.

I'd be really surprised of the Suns are still at the bottom this year, they added a good mix of veterans to go with their young guys and in year 4 it's about time that Booker elevates his game and bring wins rather then just putting up stats on a shitty team.

Or maybe i'm just being hopeful because I have Booker on my fantasy team

Well Celtics put down the 76ers who still have a ways to go. Celtics are too deep. Next challenge is the Raptors come Friday.

It's on TV too!

(I think your phone auto-corrected "road" to "radio")

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

Do you guys agree with this? It's from a Zach Lowe piece. I agree with it.

You hear it from rival executives and media here and there: "Has Curry become underrated?"

I think there is truth to that, as absurd as it sounds. Golden State's offense has never functioned all that well without him -- even in the Durant era. Curry is a revolution. LeBron is the league's best all-around player. Curry is closer to LeBron than to the jumble of guys below Durant with whom he is often lumped.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

I disagree. He has no controversy and rarely talks trash outside of games so he doesn't get as much press as others. That doesn't make him underrated, IMO. Everyone knows he's a beast and a top 5 player in the league.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

I don't know if underrated is the right word, but with Durant around I think he tends to get overlooked a little bit. He changes the Warriors offense in a way unique to the typical ball dominant star.

I agree with Lowe. With Durant on his team it's not as obvious how good he is.

Maybe fumanstan's point about overlooked vs underrated is the better term for it.

That's the crux though. Lowe is arguing, and I agree, that Curry is a 1A or 2 to LeBron, instead of just in the group with Durant, Kawhi, Harden, Davis, Greek Freak, etc. who are the "Top 5".

Feels weird that the season is starting already. I grew up in the 90's and the season kicked off in early November every year.

It also used to go much later into June. this year's finals started in May and ended Jun 8.

While I agree that he makes that offense run, I'm not sure I agree that he's above Durant, Davis, etc. Like if you were going to build a team would you start with him? Pre-Durant GS was incredible, and Curry was the best player on that team, but you can't discount how great Klay, Green, etc. are, and you could argue that Green is the MVP of how that team is run.

I also agree that I think a lot of people under-rate him and don't consider him top 5 because of Durant, where it would be a lot more clear cut if Durant wasn't on the team, but I think that's mainly because I consider Durant a better all around player.

You just proved Lowe's point.

Curry bends defenses in ways that nobody else does; heck, Atlanta put a big bet down on Trae Young just in the hopes that he can eventually do the same. It's not just that he makes that offense run, it's that he is a singular force for ANY offense. No doubt Durant is the better all around player. But even Durant does not impact the game in ways that Curry does.
