I think he knows that voiding that deal has permanently tarnished his legacy and he's trying to justify it ever since.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

Lonzo played very effective last night as the starter. I also thought moving Josh Hart into the starting lineup over KCP worked as well. Hopefully that combo works again tonight against Denver.

KCP has been very inconsistent. His outside shot has also been way off. It's only been 4 games, but his numbers are quite down.

I don't think they can trade consecutive picks so that's picks all the way out to like 2025?

If I were the owner I'd seriously consider that. Houston is good now, sure. They have CP3 for like three more years at a ridiculous price, though, and so (assuming they sign Butler to big bucks) it'd be him, Harden, Capela, and Butler, and Butler has played with Thibs for a long time and is probably on the verge of a career altering injury.

I mean this isn't Billy King territory but it's really really close. For a dude they'd lose anyway?

Given Butler is one of those guys that now must be traded, hell yeah you take that offer. Unless of course somebody is willing to overpay for him even more than Houston.

The downside is, of course, that Minnesota would be selecting the draft picks. So in a sense it would be like throwing Butler away for nothing. But hope springs eternal.

I hope Minny takes the deal. We need Butler, badly.

It would somewhat depend on the protections on the picks, but if the latter ones were fairly unprotected, I'd take it.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

That's not too bad for the Wolves at all, especially since I feel like the Rockets window is only 2-3 years long given Paul's age so those draft picks have a chance of ending up a bit better down the line. With the Rockets window being maybe 2-3 years, not too bad for them. I wonder if the Wolves would be willing to take on contracts though to match salaries.

Lakers beat the previously unbeaten Nuggets on the second night of a back to back

OKC is now 0-4 and along with Cleveland are the only winless teams now.

I'm not saying the Lakers are going to win any championships this year, but man, they are going to be fun to watch!

It was funny watching Chuck at halftime say that the Nuggets are the sneaky second best team in the West. Then when he saw the poll was overwhelmingly disagreeing with him, he said those guys are the ones who actually think the Lakers are good this year.

This is halftime when the Lakers were up on the Nuggets by a point.

McGee with another 20 point game. I thought his asthma limited his playing time but they really need him to play big minutes because when he's out, they don't really have a decent backup. KCP played better but Hart isn't relinquishing that spot, and I'm not really sure what you do with Ingram when he comes back, does he get his starting spot over Kuzma, who's also playing well and is a much needed shooter?

The Celts look... off. They scored only 34 points in the first half, in a year when scoring is skyrocketing. But they were playing OKC, so they scored 40 in the 3rd and beat them. So both teams Lakers fans hate are suffering.

Yep, no trading consecutive picks (the Clipper Rule, I think), and they can't go further out than like seven years, so these four picks are the max they can offer. There are other things they can do, like ability to swap picks, though. Not sure how all the rules work.

Hey! For once it's not the Clipper's fault (they keep all their picks, they just really, really, really suck at drafting) It was Cleveland and then-owner Ted Stepien, who basically traded five consecutive first round picks for marginal talent, then traded more before the league stepped in and actually barred him from trading picks (they lifted that after a year or two but then made it so that any trade he made had to get league approval).

The picks he traded away became, among others, James Worthy (the number one overall pick), Sam Perkins, Derek Harper, Detlef Schrempf, Roy Tarpley, and Dennis Rodman.

The rule is basically you can't be without your number one pick in consecutive years, which makes it all the more confusing because you have all these pick protections and picks that don't go over until the next year or two because of clauses.

When he sold the team the league actually gave the new owners additional compensatory picks because they literally had nothing.

Thanks for the correction. I blamed the wrong terrible '80s franchise.

Why are people surprised at McGee's scoring? To me he always looked like a legit scoring big man at GS when they would give him the opportunities. Plus, don't they have their draft pick eventually coming back to get some time at the 5?

I'm surprised because the concern was always about his asthma limiting playing time, but I guess that was erroneous:

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/2...rst-win-season

Through four games, McGee is averaging 16.2 points, 7 rebounds and 3.2 blocks in 24 minutes, and he made it clear afterward that he can play more and is not restricted by having asthma.

"This is what I want to say about the asthma," McGee said when asked about it after the game. "Stop bringing that up like I'm out here wheezing and having asthma attacks. I've never had an asthma attack in my life. I feel like that's definitely lowered my value as a basketball player.

"People say, 'Oh he only can play 20 minutes because he has asthma.' No. there's a lot of people with asthma in the league. I feel like somebody stamped that excuse on me like, 'Cool, we can play him low minutes because he has asthma.'"

McGee, who has not averaged more than 18.1 minutes per game in his previous six seasons, believes the narrative of him having to play in shorter stints due to asthma came when he spent three seasons in Denver from 2012 to 2015.

"Probably Denver because of altitude," McGee said. "Anybody has a problem breathing in Denver."

"They have asthma medicine," he added. "There's a reason I take it, so I don't have asthma when I take my asthma medicine."
If he can keep these minutes up that would be huge.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

Klay was in a huge slump coming into the Bulls game, shooting less than 14 percent from three. He hit fourteen threes today, beating Curry's record. In less than three quarters. With the team basically dominating the Bulls (they scored over 90 points in the half) and feeding him like Lisa Leslie in that high school game (she scored 100 by halftime and the other school forfeited... which is what the Bulls should have done)

I mean it's just not fair. It's like if I can just ignore Golden State the league has some cool narratives, from Lebron's integration with the Lakers to the Bucks looking like a legit contender sans Jason Kidd. But at the end of the day none of it really matters.

Kings have twice as many wins as the Thunder and Rockets... combined.

Re: 2018-2019 NBA Regular Season Thread

Even though the Lakers are 2-5 right now, they've been competitive and in their last few games.

Hopefully they can beat the Mavs tonight, but the next 4 games after that are going to be rough. Saturday they have to play the Blazers again in Portland.
