The Red Sox are going to regret this deal very soon. He was practically on the scrap heap just a year ago and one good stretch in the postseason for Boston gets him 4 years.

I think this indicates the Red Sox have little intention of resigning Porcello next year.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Eovaldi was only on the scrap heap because he needed TJ in a contract year. The Rays signed him to rehab with them before flipping him to the Sox. It's not like he was some bum that couldn't get a job, he was always looked at as a fine starter with lots of upside.

I'm not surprised he was able to get a 4th year, he'll only be 33 when the contract is up. As long as he can stay healthy, he'll be a fine mid-rotation piece and these days, $16 million a year is the going price for that.

He's had two Tommy John surgeries, which makes him a real health risk.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Eovaldi was pretty good all year, but I agree that his hot postseason stretch really made him a prime target. The past injuries make him a risk, but someone was going to give him that contract.

The other day on Sports Hub(Felger and Maz) they were saying that the Red Sox shouldn't re-sign him. They also didn't want the Red Sox to sign FA JD Martinez and he had an MVP type season.

I was just reading a story on MLB about the epic 12-player trade with Seattle, Cleveland, and the Mets involving JJ Putz, Franklin Gutierrez, and Valbuena.

Someone on the Cardinals has #44 (Gregerson) so Goldschmidt didn't ask to have it, so he's taking #46. That's the kind of guy you are getting, St. Louis.

What do the Dbacks think of their Goldy return? Seems like usable starters who were spare pieces for the Cards, plus a draft pick. I guess that's what happens when your superstar has only one year left on his contract.

I think the Dbacks did pretty well since Goldy only had one year left on the contract. I'm surprised they didn't try to bundle Goldy and Greinke together. Some rumors indicated that is what they were trying to do with Houston.

I'm not a Dbacks fan but it's disappointing the team didn't try to keep Goldy as a franchise player. I think this says more about their projection of Goldy's decline. He looked absolutely terrible at the start of last season well into May. They are probably smart dumping Goldy now, but it still would have been nice for their fans.

I think they probably were against the Red Sox signing more because of what happened with Pablo Sandoval. I wasn’t on board with Sandoval, I wanted Chase Headley because he would cost half of that. Then again you also have to accept that Felger and Maz are two incredibly negative douches

Maz gets way too excited about the smallest things and he is a heart attack waiting to happen.

Those two would complain if they had just won the lottery.

I don't really see the downside of signing JD Martinez except for the cost and if you thought he was playing out of his mind for the Dbacks (which he kind of was, but he kept it up with the Bosox).

About the best we could do in the situation we were in. He wasn't re-signing here so I am glad we at least got something. 2 ML ready players helps. Hopefully the change of scenery will do them well.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

I guess we shouldn't call it an "accident."

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/f...-in-venezuela/

Quote:
The Major League Baseball family lost two members to a car crash Friday morning. The league announced that free agent infielder Luis Valbuena and former player Jose Castillo died in a car accident.

The two Venezuelans were playing winter ball in their native country and took part in a game Thursday night. On their way home, it looks like they might have been targeted in a robbery. According to BeisbolPlay (via the Los Angeles Times), authorities believe the players and two other passengers -- who survived -- could have been targets of a criminal act. It seems like some groups in Venezuela throw rocks onto roads in order to disable vehicles and then rob those in the car.

The publication further reports that four suspects were arrested by police and had some of Valbuena and Castillo's personal belongings.

Phillies sign McCutchen.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...hen-agree-deal

Quote:
The Philadelphia Phillies and outfielder Andrew McCutchen have agreed to a deal, sources confirmed to ESPN.

According to ESPN and multiple reports, McCutchen will receive a three-year, $50 million contract. The deal includes a team option for the 2022 season.

The 32-year-old, a five-time All-Star and the 2013 National League MVP, batted .255 with 20 homers and 65 RBIs in 155 games last season with the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. He hit .253 with five homers in 25 games for the Yankees after being acquired on Aug. 31.

As a Braves' fan, I am superhappy the Phillies signed him. He's just not the same player he was even two years ago.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

That's certainly the implication, and I think there were already whisperings that they were more interested in Machado. And supposedly the Yankees are out too, though who knows.

So maybe the Dodgers (or Nats) are the frontrunners? There's talk of the White Sox, but it's hard to imagine his wanting to join a non-marquee team with a lot of farm talent but not many proven players.
