The reason you sign Harper is that 26 year old superstars never come on the FA market. You have to overpay for him. But you do hobble your team to do it. I don't think he makes the Phillies a WS contending team, but even without him the Nats still are.

Bill James(stat guru-Red Sox advisor) has come out and said that MLB players can be easily replaced(of course the MLB players union can't be too happy about this).

If that is true then why hasn't anyone in the last 100 years tried to start another Major League? There are plenty of players available and I would gladly watch a league that is somewhere between Triple A and MLB caliber of play.

You and your other leagues

Here's the article - http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...-mlbpa-players

In a series of tweets, some of which were later deleted, James challenged on social media "to explain why a player making $3 million a year is underpaid" and why it's "disingenuous to argue that [players] are taking money out of the mouths of concessions workers."

"If the players all retired tomorrow, we would replace them," James continued. "The game would go on; in three years it would make no difference whatsoever. The players are NOT the game, any more than the beer vendors are."
I kind of get what James might be trying to say, advocating for the game itself over the players, but probably not the smartest thing to diminish the importance of the current players out there.

If Harper is worth $350 million, what will Trout get? Iím hoping that Angels extend him before 2020. I think he will be 28 or 29 by then.

Sorry, Cubs fans, but this made me laugh. From a Chicago Tribune article:

The Cubs recently picked up the $10.5 million option on starter Jose Quintana. Around the same time, reliever Brandon Kintzler picked up his $5 million player option to complete the fifth inning for Quintana.

Technically that's not true. How can you finish an inning if you never get any outs?

I think it is funny also. It's just amazing that the Cubs were able to make the post season with the bad pitching pickup they made last year.

No help from those pitchers, plus their former MVP either out or a shell of himself for half the year, and they still won 95 games. They need to figure out some things, but it's still a good team.

He's right in the sense that 80% of the league is replaceable. I don't think the average person would notice much difference if MLB position player rosters were replaced overnight with AAA rosters, ignoring the names. The only real difference would be the starting pitching. There's only about 100-140 men in the world that can handle starting pitching on a successful basis and they aren't in the minors.

The real reason this got so much coverage is that James has some connection to the Red Sox's front office, and the owners are scared to death the players are going to strike in 2020. These words are going to be used against the owners when the labor contract is negotiated.

Sure, the game is cyclical, and players will always be replaced by new players. I think the three-year period is a gross exaggeration, though.

MLB has contract extension with Fox to televise more games through 2028. Quite a bit more lot more revenue than previous deal brought in. I would assume that would cause the luxury tax threshold to go up a bit.

Amazing for a sport where interest beyond one's own/local team is constantly declining.

I think to offset a possible strike the MLB owners will probably offer expansion (MLBPA love that) and I can see MLB team's having a 3-man taxi squad to cover injuries and unexpected doubleheaders.

The value to a Network for live content will continue to climb. Sports and major award shows are the only things on the networks that people still sit through commercials to watch.

I suppose, but when they can't draw eyeballs to Dodgers/Sox, that's a big problem. But I'm not a network suit, so what do I know.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was the only player to accept the qualifying offer.

No surprises among the winners so far, I guess: Ohtani, Acuna, Snell, DeGrom.

So Ryu is back with the Dodgers next year? Cool.

It was surprising to Kate Upton.

Verlander would have been a good pick too, but hard to argue with Snell.

I think you are correct. I expect two expansion teams are offered to smooth things over with the Union. The Union is deeply unhappy with the free agency trends and planning to go to war.

Good for baseball making all that money with Fox but the game's national popularity has shrunk under Fox's tenure as a broadcast partner. I have to blame Fox partially for that, they don't have a strong marketing machine.

Any MLB uniform from the 1970s was good(well except for the Astros).

The Big Maple is moving on. Mariners trade LHP James Paxton to the Yankees for top prospect LHP Justus Sheffield and two other prospects.

I think the Mariners had to make this deal. They have no highly ranked talent in the minors, and Paxton's value is at its peak. They could've tried to maximize their talent for another run this season, but it was obvious they would at best be fighting for the second WC, so they might as well tear down and try to maximize for a few years down the road when they'll be free of most of their big contracts.
