I'd like to see them add Harper, but that has the potential to backfire in a way that would make the Heyward deal look good.

I could see that too ... If anything, I think they should add an infielder, backup catcher, and pen.

Though I guess if they sign Harper, they probably trade Happ, Almora, or Schwarber .. which could bring some of that back.

I'm a huge Nats fan and love Harper but it's hard to justify giving him what he wants to keep him. Keeping him means we will likely have to let Rendon and probably Turner walk. Our OF is pretty damn solid even without Harper and it's not like we have gone to the W.S. with him (not all his fault at all).

I read he turned down $350M from the Nats. JFC.

ESPN says it was $300M, but still, yeah, JFC.

I think he'll regret that move, I don't think he's getting more. Unless his goal was to get to a certain team, in which case he may not regret it.

Maybe Harper figures the offer will always be there, and he might as well see what else is out there. And he's probably right, unless the Nats give him the Greg Maddux treatment and use the money elsewhere.

Yeah, I've heard that they want a reliable veteran backup in hopes that Contreras will be better with more rest, and someone to share closing to reduce workload for Morrow.

I wouldn't be surprised to see any of those guys go, though obviously they wouldn't provide much short-term salary relief. I think that if the FO was thinking of Harper three years ago (and they likely were), they got bitten in the ass when Heyward regressed and didn't take the opt-out. A guy who was the top position player on the market and would still be 29 seemed like an obvious opt-out, but it's a funny game. But flags fly forever.

He is not going to regret the move, somenbody is going to offer that much if not more.

I believe several teams will offer more. And I'm fairly confident St. Louis will be one of those teams.

The Washington offer didn't include opt outs if I read correctly. I'd be shocked if whatever deal he ended up with didn't have one or more of those included.

If he was 29 I may agree but since he's 26, you can give him a 10 year deal and still get the bulk of his prime out of it. I think Boras is going to want him to beat Stanton's $325M, but I long have thought he'll get $350M over 10 years.

I have to say though, neither he nor Stanton are worth it. In some ways although I love Harp to death I would rather be able to get a solid 2B, C, middle reliever and SP we need badly which we would not be able to if we re-sign harper.

I'll have about 5 useless jerseys though...

I don't think Harper will sign for less than $300 million so I don't think he did a disservice to himself for walking away. But man, leaving $300 million on the table is just crazy to me.

Here are my FA predictions in case anyone was dying to know my opinion.

Harper - Phillies
Machado - Dodgers
Corbin - Yankees
Keuchel - Braves
Kimbrel - Back to Boston

Have the Dodgers even indicated that they want Machado back? I always thought they brought him in as a playoff rental with Seager coming back.

A lot of people feel the Dodgers have little interest in signing Machado.

The Nationals only made a token offer to Harper, knowing he would turn it down.

Any team that signs Harper will have to beat out the Stanton contract. I think it's likely going to be a backloaded deal for $350 million somewhere.

5.2

and

139

100

Those are Harper's WAR figures and games played for every year of his career. I haven't paid close enough attention, so you guys are probably right that he gets the $300M+, but holy fuck is that crazy money for him.

He is absolutely not worth it. The hype around him is ridiculous. I may not saying he isn't talented and toward the top of the league in that regard, but he isn't worth that contract.

$300 million is a bargain if you're getting 10.0 WAR a year!

But... yeah. Funny how both he and Machado have warts that they didn't have a year or two ago.

Machado to Phillies for sure

I'd love to see the Braves sign Harper. They have money and they could use him... but it'll never happen.

Machado has had his warts for years, remember that stituation with the A's a few years ago?

Yeah, but they seem heightened now, maybe because of the World Series stage.

Anyway, I figure it's a foregone conclusion that the Phillies will end up with either him or Harper, though they probably are hoping to end up with Trout in the near future.

Everyone loves the guy who chucks a bat at the 3rd baseman!

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Mariners trade starting catcher Mike Zunino and change to the Rays for OF Mallex Smith and change. Zunino was the third overall pick in 2012 and always gets high marks for his pitch-calling, framing, and other defensive skills, plus his power, but he always struck out too much and could never hit consistently. He could've been an All-Star if he'd been able to hit .240.

Smith will probably play center with Dee Gordon going to second and Robinson Cano to first or DH, depending in part on whether they re-sign Nelson Cruz. The 1B they got from the A's last year, Ryon Healy, hit for power but had a .277 OBP.

I never quite understood the Harper hype since he really just had one monster season and a few very good ones.

As a Dodger fan, wouldn't mind seeing Machado back but it certainly doesn't feel like they're interested in retaining him.

Well, he was just about the most hyped prospect before he played an inning.

And he didn't just have a monster season, it was historically monster. Given his hype, it didn't seem like a one-off. So everyone feels like he can replicate that. And he probably can. But it seems like with that monster season you're gonna get a bunch of injuries and a few good seasons, and a few mediocre ones.

USA Today feels very certain that Harper is headed to Philly. But they say that the Dodgers aren't interested in him and I have no idea why they came to that conclusion. I mean they've been so careful to not top the Luxury Tax threshold for this particular off-season. They had to have bigger plans than just extending Kershaw's deal for one more year longer.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Rosenthal thinks the Cards are fading on Harper. Nightengale thinks says the Cubs aren't going to spend unless they can dump Heyward or Darvish. There was an article in the Athletic that the Cubs could do nothing this offseason and still do better than last year. They obviously knew about Harper when they spent the money on Darvish and Chatwood, but when those guys turned out to be useless, they had to add Hamels to the mix as well, and I think that's what has them stuck now.

Sure. I guess i'm basically saying I don't think the hype and attention has been warranted off that one season and his existing body of work.
