According to TV2 Detroit ex-Tiger catcher Bill Freehan(who caught the final out of the 1968 WS) is suffering from dementia and can't walk or talk and is in Hospice care.

There's an article out there with Boras saying Harper already has a deal in place and the details are being worked out. I have to believe he's signing back with the Nationals if the deal is already done.

With his back injury history, diminished velocity, and less than stellar World Series performance, I don't think there is any way that Kershaw will opt out of his contract. My prediction is that he will use these next 3 days to try to hash out a longer term contract with the Dodgers but at a lower AAV, (5 years for $145M or 6 years for $168M).

I thought they couldn't officially negotiate until after the WS was over.

Hmm, this doesn't make it clear as to when they could negotiate, but players weren't FAs until today, so I would assume that's the start date: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2...ards-and-more/

Yeah, I'm sure it'd have to be the Nationals unless some team was tampering. But I don't trust Boras anyway.

Sure Madden is going into his last year of his contract but Girardi could have a long wait. Unless the Cubs really decline next year I suspect that Madden will get a new contract.

In some completely unsurprising news, Dbacks pick up Goldschmidt's team option and Giants pick up MadBum's option.

Is the Giants' move of exercising Pablo Sandoval's 2019 option just a FU to Boston since they are on the hook for the vast majority of the $17 to 18 million tab, or are the Red Sox stuck paying regardless of the option?

Red Sox pay it regardless. Giants only have to pick up the league minimum (IIRC) for his contract. He's a fan favorite there and actually played OK (well, better than he did in Boston), so I can see why they picked it up.

As much as I love Clayton Kershaw, his raw stuff these days doesn't really merit anything more than $100 million on a multi-year deal.

Kershaw badly needs to develop a change-up now that his fastball is mediocre.

More interesting question will be if they trade those guys.

Price has decided not to opt out, I'm shocked.

Considering the state of the market for pitchers, I don't foresee any guy that opts out getting more than they are currently getting.

We will see by 9 PM PT tonight when Kershaw has to decide if he will opt out or not. General consensus is that he will if only to get a longer deal and more security.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

I thought the Cubs dodged a bullet when they declined the $10M option on Brandon Kintzler (7.00 ERA in 25 games with them), but he had a $5M option, which he exercised.

Cubs also exercise the $10.5M option on Jose Quintana. I doubt he'll ever live up to the prospect value they gave up for him, but he's a solid major-league starter on a relatively cheap contract.

I met Stretch when I was a kid. He had just returned to the Giants for a renaissance season.

McCovey. Never a Giants fan, but will always have great respect for greatness.

Actually we won't. Dodgers and Kersh's people agreed to extend the deadline until Friday.

Cubs picked up the Hamels' option for 2019.

If he pitches anywhere near as he did when they traded for him this is a move.

Re: MLB 2018 - 2019 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

They also dealt Drew Smyly to the Rangers. What I think happened is the Cubs threatened the Rangers that they were going to decline the $20M option and work out a separate deal with Hamels because the Rangers were on the hook to pay the $6M buyout. So instead the Rangers took Smyly and his $7M contract, and there's a PTBNL or two involved.

Smyly was traded to the Mariners before the 2017 season, then he pitched in the World Baseball Classic, blew out his arm shortly thereafter, and hasn't thrown in the majors since. The Cubs signed him to a two-year stash last year hoping he might help late in the year or at least be available for 2019.

It was a pretty obvious move to bring back Hamels but they wanted to clear some salary to do it. Smyly clearly wasn't going to be one of their top five starters, but I wonder what they really thought of his recovery.

EDIT: Clarified that the Rangers were on the hook for Hamels' $6M buyout had the Cubs declined the option, per the trade terms.

The next move for the Cubs is to sign Harper.
