Re: 2018 MLB Week 26 Sep 24-30 *Final Week*

NL playoff picture is still unclear. I would have thought the Rockies might have faded. Instead, they haven't gone away. And while the odds don't seem to be in their favor, their schedule gives them a chance.

Colorado: (H): Phillies, Nationals
Dodgers: (A): Diamondbacks, Giants
Cardinals: (H): Brewers; (A): Cubs

They're just one behind in the loss column to both the Dodgers in the division and the Cards in the wild card chase.

And while St. Louis could still be caught by Colorado and miss the postseason, they could still win the division with a week to go. Hard to fathom. Go Pirates!

Not sure if I should be rooting for the Brewers or Cards in their series. I guess the Cards because the Brewers are closer, and the Cubs still have some games left with the Cards in case they need to battle it out with them directly. Maybe they can beat each other up, with the Cards taking two of three.

In the AL, the Astros and Red Sox are the best teams. Don't let Cleveland fool you as a real contender. The AL Central this year was historically bad, and most stats indicate Cleveland feasted on very weak teams.

The Dodgers have the most depth in the NL but aren't going anywhere unless Kershaw and Kenley both play their A games.

It saddens me to admit that Kershaw isn't the same pitcher he was even two years ago. His stuff is remarkably diminished and has been getting through games on grit and determination. Even his curveball these days is a pale shadow of what it once was.

That said, this year he has a 2.45 ERA (same as Nola) and a 1.02 WHIP and 145 SO in 150 IP. Not like he's a #4 starter.

If the Dodgers and Rockies tie but the Dodgers have the head-to-head series lead, is there a 1 game playoff in L.A. or do the Dodgers win the Division?

Yeah, to be fair, we're comparing current Kershaw to what were historic levels.

And this:

https://www.mlb.com/news/playoff-tie...les/c-59527184

If one game is needed to break a tie for a playoff berth between two teams, it will be played on the Monday after the scheduled end to the regular season, hosted by the team that won the season series against the other. That applies to determining a division championship whether or not the losing team would still qualify as a Wild Card.

Home-field advantage is determined first by head-to-head records, then by the higher winning percentage in intradivision games. If a further tiebreaker is needed, it's the best winning percentage in the last half of intraleague games.

I'm just rooting for the Cubs.

A magic number of 5 looks so far away, their magic number for a playoff spot is 2, so hopefully they can get that right away and go from there and move on.

Had to vote for the A's and Cubs, a real long shot for both but then I can get tickets from my neighbor and go to the games in Oakland.

It does seem far away when so many other teams have already clinched. Just gotta take it one step at a time and hope for help.

ESPN had a really good article the other week on what's changed with him as his velocity has gone down.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...espnapi_public

Kershaw's average fastball velocity has dropped each of the past four years, from 94.2 mph in 2015 to 91.5 mph in 2018. He has continually used the heater less (40.9 percent of the time in 2018, down from 53.6 percent of the time in 2015) and instead relies more heavily on his slider (41.3 percent in 2018, up from 27.9 percent in 2015).

His swinging-strike percentage, which got as high as 15.9 in 2015, is down to 11.4. Kershaw is nibbling a little bit more, as evidenced by the 46.2 percent of pitches that are landing within the strike zone, second lowest of his career. There also has been the inevitable drop in strikeout rate (8.8) and increase in hits per nine innings (7.5), both of which are his worst since his rookie season in 2008.

8.8 Ks and 7.5 hits per nine. What an embarrassment.

Seriously though, I do wonder if he opts out at the end of the year, and if so, do the Dodgers sign him for more. As it is, I believe he's the second-highest paid pitcher in baseball behind former teammate Zach Grenke (who the Dodgers let walk two years ago).

I assume he'll opt out and sign an extension for more years at fewer dollars per year.

Nice gesture I suppose. But, rest players? There is an off day on Thursday and then they'll have months to rest after this week. Goldschmidt is on the bench tonight.

^ If there is one thing on Earth I am certain of, it's that the D-Backs don't want the Dodgers celebrating another Division Championship in their ballpark (and swimming pool)

Right, I thought that made sense for a playoff-bound team but then realized it was the Dbacks.

The Brewers declared tonight's game a bullpen game. They're not kidding. They are making a pitching change one batter into the game. It's going to be a long night.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 26 Sep 24-30 *Final Week*

Just as the Brewers are bringing in their 7th pitcher of the game in the 7th inning, there's a rain delay.

Game tied 4-4. Cards scored 3 off of Hader and the Brewers responded with a run off of Hicks.

Whoever wins picks up a game on Chicago. And the Rockies are destroying the hapless Phillies so a little extra pressure on St. Louis (and the Dodgers who trail 2-1 in the 4th).

Bullpen game and Hader gets knocked around, and the Crew wins anyway.

Which wouldn’t matter as much if the Cubs could’ve taken care of business.
