The MVP will depend on how the season finishes. Lots of players have credible cases this year and there are no runaway choices. If the Brewers somehow steal the division away from the Cubs, I think Christian Yelich is a lock. He's been getting a lot of hype the past month.

Blah, Dodgers win big series against the DBacks and Rockies but lose games like this to the Mets and Reds.

Glad the Cards rebounded from multiple deficits to steal a victory against the Pirates. A sweep would really be great with the Brewers/Cubs playing each other. Milwaukee is now within a game of 1st. Cards 3.5 back.

Re: the NL MVP chase, I don't recall a season where there's been this many worthy candidates. It really may come down to who has a hot 2-3 weeks to close out the year to lead their team to a playoff spot or division crown.

I am curious to see how bad Cain and Yelich hurt each other in the voting.

When is the last time a team added two MVP candidates during the previous winter?

And the bottom has dropped out on the Phillies. This is why they play 162 games in Baseball, as the 'pretenders' usually start leaking oil in August for the stretch run. The funny thing is I was hoping for a .500 record before the season starts, and that is probably what they will finish up with so I can't be that mad.

Cubs really needed that win. Addison Russell made a great play in the ninth, and the camera got this reaction shot from 3B David Bote:

For all the success the Cardinals have had over the last 7 weeks or so, they have had their share of horrible losses. Another one today--dropping a 4-3 contest to the Pirates. They had a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs 3 times (including the 9th) and were unable to drive him in.

It's looking more and more like the Brewers robbed Jeter and the Marlins for Yelich. The players they got back haven't looked great and Yelich is looking like a superstar locked into a cheap contract.

I know the Braves were interested in Yelich but the Marlins were unwilling to deal him in the division.

They have a real tough stretch coming up with the Dodgers, Braves, Brewers and Cubs. If they win the series against the Dodgers this weekend should make the playoffs pretty easily and can target the division but could be in trouble if they lose the series.

Hats off to the Met's fans who stuck around for 8 hours only to watch the first game of a DH vs Marlins(second game postponed because of late start).

They get too do it all over again later today with another scheduled double header.

David Price announces he won't opt out of his contract because he doesn't want to play for a worse team. He may also figure he's not going to get 4/$127M at age 33.

To his credit, he has pitched well this year, but it's like Jason Heyward--even if he's resurrected his reputation, he's not going to get similar dollars from someone else in this economic climate.

On the bright side, their fate is in their own hands. That wasn't the case a month ago. And on another positive note, most of those games are at home and they've played much better at Busch Stadium. I'd love to see a run at the division, but while mathematically in reach, it's improbable with 2 teams ahead of them.

The fact that the Cubs had to travel to Washington today is a joke. This should of been an "if needed" game at the end of the season but the Nats insisted that it be played so they could get the gate for the 31k tickets that were sold. This has resulted in the Cubs having to play 30 days in a row. Their next day off is a week from today.

At least the Cubs won, but yeah, on their “off” day they used nine pitchers.

These kinds of games will help Baez’s MVP campaign.

Not sure what’s gotten into Greg Holland, but he hasn’t given up a baserunner in three appearances against the Cubs this month. And his ERA has dropped below 5!

Yeah it's not really fair that the Cubs will have so many days in a row without an off day, especially now that it looks like Strop could be out a while. However, MLB really doesn't give much room to play extra games after the season. Cubs fans might know better but how would that even work if that game was needed after the season? The Wild Card game is that Tuesday and the as needed game would have played Monday. So when would the division tie breaker game be played, which would likely be played if the National game was needed?

That would be pretty tricky (and certainly still in play because cancellations might still happen), and I don't know the answer. I can't imagine having a doubleheader at a neutral site (winner of the first game plays a team waiting for them in the stands!).

And yeah, Strop is a big blow. Morrow MIGHT be back in a week, but they've already said they plan to ease him back in, and Carl Edwards is a mess. Morrow has been great when healthy, but they knew what they were signing up for and the risks involved. They brought back Brian Duensing after he was solid last year, and he's been useless--just another example of how relievers are always hit or miss. The surprise is how waiver-wire guys like De La Rosa have actually been helpful.

David Wright is going to come off the disabled list and start one game, and then he's done. They're not calling it "retirement" because of his contract, but that's what it is.

Sad to see it happen, glad he gets on the field one more time. Dude was on a HoF career before the injuries derailed him.

Back in 1965 the Mets played the Phillies in a twilight doubleheader the day before the season ended.

The second game was a 0-0 18 inning tie(which had too completely be replayed).

The first game's radio broadcast that day is available on YouTube(unless it was pulled)..

The following day they played another doubleheader(because of the tie) and the first game went 13 innings(I am going to double check that).

So in less that 24 hours they played 49 innings .

These games were played back in the day when pitchers actually pitched and didn't come out of the game after throwing only 8 pitches(or if their ass itches).

Cubs complaining is a joke .
