Rizzo! And after Hader had made Murphy and Baez look bad.

And the Cards were all set to beat Scherzer and the Nats and Norris and the pen blew it again. Even worse, Holland gets the win. Somehow this is Matheny's fault.

Yeah, Holland getting the win is kind of a middle finger.

Brewers pull out the game in 10. With the bases loaded and one out, Bryant got a grounder and tried to pull a 5-3 DP, but I think he should've gone home for the force. Maybe you can then try for the DP at first, but at least you cut off the run.

There was a pre game fight amongst some Seattle Mariners tonight (probably everyone wanted too play against hapless Orioles).

That loss to the Red Sox today was just brutal. It's not even the first time this season when the Braves blew a huge lead late in a game. They also blew a game to the Cubs, up 10-2 in the 7th.

It's weird because the Braves have had a good bullpen most of the year. No big names, but several solid relievers. But they don't have an ace reliever that can be brought in to finish off another team.

Ohtani having TJ surgery. Ooof. Should've done it earlier.

Crap, I was hoping he'd be able to avoid that. Now it'll probably be 2020 unless he can come back sooner just to hit (no idea about that, but I know they had fewer restrictions on that this year).

Ugh, annoyed to see the Dodgers lose 2 to the Mets. Colorado now building a little division lead.

That West race is nutty. Hard to imagine the Dodgers might miss the playoffs, but then everyone picked the Nats before the season so that wouldn't even be the strangest outcome.

Happy that Quintana came through and the Cubs avoided the sweep. That ninth inning was nerve-wracking the way it started.

The more I watch live games, the more I'm in favor of automated balls and strikes.

The tech behind automated balls and strikes is rock solid, they should definitely implement it.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 23 Sep 3-9 Labor Day Edition

The regular Tigers broadcast team (Rod Allen and Mario Impemba) got into a physical altercation with each other after Tuesday's game, which is why neither was in the booth yesterday. Today is an off day, so it will be interesting to see what shakes out over the next 24 hours or so. Now I wish I hadn't already completely switched to football mode, and watched Tuesday's game...

And it would be fun to see players and managers arguing with machines.

I'm hearing they're not really fans of each other outside the booth. Nobody in these parts cares for Rod... we do (mostly) like Mario though. So apparently Rod was enjoying the sights in Chicago instead of doing his job prep and Mario kept poking him thru the broadcast about it.

All 37 people who still watch the Tigers can probably tell it better than I did but I don't think we'll see that duo in the booth any time soon; if ever.

The Tigers tv announcers(except for Kirk Gibson) are hall-of-famers compared to the sad sack Orioles foursome of Jim Hunter,Mike Bordick,Rick Dempsey and Tom Davis.

The foursome mentioned above have combined to write the Worlds Shortest Sports Book titled: Negative Things We Have Said About The Baltimore Orioles written by Hunter,Bordick,Dempsey and forward by Tom Davis.

Speaking about Kirk Gibson,he doesn't look well at all(unless he is preparing to be on the latest Walking Dead episode).

It could have massive, unintended consequences that aren't foreseeable. Pitchers are paid a lot of money to get hitters out.

It would take just one or two pitchers figuring out how to "steal" almost unhittable strikes on the edges to warp the batter-pitcher confrontation forever. Maybe that unhittable backdoor slider which grazes the outside corner of the plate, which you only occasionally get from human umps, is an automatic strike.

That is why I bristle at the automated strike zone. It's certainly not something that should be tested at the MLB level before being widely used in another pro league. There's no way Japan would ever touch it, but I imagine MLB could talk one of the other Asian pro leagues into widescale testing.

How is that different from pitchers figuring out how a human umpire is calling the strike zone that night and adjusting accordingly?

Re: 2018 MLB Week 23 Sep 3-9 Labor Day Edition

Of course it is no different from what we have now.

Every batter and pitcher will tell you the same thing, what they want most is consistency and a tech strike zone will provide it.

Just tonight with Harper at the plate as the tying run the umpire missed a clear strike three and then on the very next pitch in the exact same location Harper got rung up. This kind of inconsistency drives pitchers and batters nuts.

The tech is very strong, it could be rolled out in the Majors and the game would be better for it.

Yeah, it's been pretty obvious that they aren't buddies and never have been. I'm sure Rod has also gotten a little touchy since Gibson has been in his spot a lot more this season. I like Gibson, but it's obvious his illness would never allow him to take over fulltime.

Rod was already scheduled to not be in the booth for the next six games, but he was supposed to be in the studio pre/post game. It will be interesting to see what the arrangement is tonight. I can't imagine the two of them ever working a game together again. I'd assume Rod is gone, but probably not Mario. I would be OK if they replaced them both though.

Fox Sports Detroit just announced that both Rod and Mario will not be back this season, effective immediately. I can't imagine either one will be back next year either.
