Seems like this isn't even a contest. Greg Holland was the most money and has the worst WAR. He was utterly terrible for the Cardinals and arguably cost them several games. And his failure set the tone for a bad bullpen that is only now recovering thanks to some new blood and fresh arms.

Easily Greg Holland. He had the highest expectations and biggest contract.

Thanks for this poll, David.

If only the Cards had gotten rid of Matheny and the dead bullpen weight sooner. They've now won 5 straight series after sweeping the hapless Royals. Their bullpen on their recently completed road trip (7-2) had an ERA of less than 1.

Sorry. This was probably a better question when I thought of it a few week ago. Or maybe not. But at least I had the Darvish poll earlier in the year.

I do think it's kind of interesting to look back at a guy like LoMo who was considered such a bargain at the time then turned in a terrible year.

It has to be one of the worst signings in recent memory. If the Cardinals miss the playoffs, it very well could come down to Holland playing terrible for them.

It wouldn't have been so abysmal if Matheny hadn't kept trotting him out there in leverage situations long after it was obvious he had absolutely nothing and had no clue how to right the ship.

Holland was bad. Matheny's use of him amplified the awfulness unnecessarily.

Cards turn to pick on the Nationals bullpen.

Big time win to kick off the homestand and keep the momentum going.

Ugh, Dodgers really missing Jansen. Blew another 9th inning.

I haven't even heard of half of the Dodgers' new "closers."

The Dodgers went surprisingly cheap and didn't resign Brandon Morrow. They really wanted to get under that luxury tax deal. I think it's going to cost them a real shot at another World Series run.

2 more HRs for Acuna today. That's 8 in his last 8 games.

The Cardinals are officially on a hot streak with 7 wins in a row. They're right there in the Wild Card race now and only four games back in the division. The bad taste left in my mouth by their perpetual mediocrity of the last few years is finally fading and I'm starting to be a believer. The home stretch of the season should be fun!

I"ll forever cast caution on any optimism, but this is feeling quite a bit like 2011.

Marp's on-base streak is at 32 games.

His amazing numbers aside, the offense has done quite well since the change in management and hitting coaches.

St. Louis is 18-9 since they replaced Matheny with Shildt.

St. Louis is 14-4 since they cut Greg Holland (Incidentally, the Nationals are 3-6 since he joined their club)

St. Louis is 9-1 since Dexter Fowler was injured.

How about since Pham was dumped?

So much for the Cubs gaining momentum from The Bote Game. They just haven't been able to put together a run in the second half despite still having the top record in the NL. The starting pitching is too inconsistent (where have you gone, Jon Lester?), and they still miss Bryant.

Addition by subtraction FTW!

I don't care if Fowler gets his boot off in September and walks on water - there's no way they can put him back in the everyday lineup.

Shaw has looked completely horrid at 2B in the 4th inning, 4 plays most 2B would be able to make or at least knock the ball down and keep it in the IF.

Deliberately hitting Acuna with the first pitch was totally bush league. Baseball really needs to shut this garbage down. To me, a 5 or 6-game suspension is not nearly enough. There's a good chance he's hurt now, ruining what has been a great story.

And Carpenter leaves the game tonight after being hit in the hand by a pitch. Hopefully that's not serious.

Cards win 8th in a row.

X-rays negative on Carpenter. Hoping for the best.

That guy was blatantly gunning to hit Acuna. I could understand throwing inside, but he squared Acuna right in the back.

Many people inside the game think Acuna is going to be the next Mike Trout. I expect the pitcher gets a harsh suspension.
