Cards starting a few pitchers this week making their major league debuts. Tonight's hurler is Daniel Poncedeleon. If his name sounds familiar, it's because he made the news last year in AAA when he was hit in the head by a line drive and underwent emergency brain surgery. He's come back from that and he's been dealing. He threw a 1-hit shutout in his last start at Memphis.

I'm sticking with the Astros to win the World Series, but the Red Sox are an absolute juggernaut. They are going to win that division, forcing the Yankees to play in the wild card. This Red Sox team is one of the five or six best teams I've seen in my life. They remind me of the 1998 Yankees.

That being said, it all comes down to how Sale and Price pitch in the playoffs. I have no concerns about Sale, but Price has flaked out again and again in the postseason.

Cool to see someone be able to come back from something like that, just horrible. I wish him as much well as I can for a Cardinal

.. also sticking with my Cubs vote ... I am assuming they will shore up the pen and once the playoffs start, starters are less important.

Hey, if I voted for them in Week 1, I should stick with them, right? Actually they're not as good as I expected, but they're getting healthy and just picked up a superstar, which can only help their chances. I still think they're not as good as the top teams in the AL but maybe those AL teams will wear each other down by the World Series this year (it didn't work last year, unfortunately )

Supposedly just for a short stint just to make sure he's fully recovered from his strain.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 17 Jul 23-29

Their rotation is getting pretty thin.

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Brent Suter has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, the team announced Monday.

He will likely need Tommy John surgery, according to a report by The Athletic.

The team placed Suter on the 10-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Jorge Lopez from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell had announced Sunday that Suter would be placed on the disabled list after the southpaw experienced forearm tightness in his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Suter allowed six runs in just three innings Sunday and is 8-7 with a 4.80 ERA this season. He is the latest Brewers starter to be sidelined with an injury, joining Junior Guerra, Zach Davies and Jimmy Nelson.

Guerra is expected to be activated from the DL for Tuesday's start against the Washington Nationals. The injury to Suter could prompt the Brewers to trade for a starting pitcher before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

No hitter thru 6 innings! Not worried about a jinx because there is no way he's finishing this off. 90 pitches so far.

Thru 7 innings...and at 117 pitches. I cringe at the thought of the bullpen coming into to preserve this young man a victory.

So Machado, who didn't want to play 3rd base for the O's, is playing 3rd for the Dodgers tonight.

Norris gives up a game tying home run with 2 outs in the 9th. Then 2 hits, a walk and a walk off.

Blow this team up. So frustrating.

Even as a Cubs fan I feel bad for Poncedeleon, a great MLB debut and the pen loses the game in the 9th allowing 2 runs with two outs.

It is hard for me to not think Norris is trying to play his way out of town. What a choke job by that guy.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 17 Jul 23-29

To tell you how bad the Cards' bullpen has been, their ERA since the break is worse than the ERA from the 4 position players the Cubs have used in the same time period.

Which leads to a question for the Cubs fans here--did you like Maddon bringing in Rizzo to pitch?

It's not much of a secret that I think Maddon is more of a knucklehead than a genius (the same most folks thought about LaRussa, I know). But I thought this was incredibly foolish to risk injury to a key player. The other day when they used 3 position players, he joked that Rizzo wanted to pitch. But he also said he limited the work each player got because of soreness, etc. that naturally develops. If I am Epstein, I send a not-so-subtle message that Rizzo's pitching career is now over. Any of you suffer any anxiety seeing that? It's OK if you think I am the knucklehead.

No, I thought Jose Canseco taught managers not to use their star players as mop-up pitchers.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 17 Jul 23-29

re: Rizzo. I think the injury risk is pretty small. I think in Maddon's mind it was a way to try to turn a bad game into something still kind of fun. Some of the stuff he does seems goofy to me, but I think he goal is that it is a really long season and to keep things interesting (from flamingos in the clubhouse, road trip wear, and to an extent moving guys to different positions .. though that has a good practical effect too)

Rizzo seemed to get a kick out of it and it took some of the sting out of a bad game.

Obviously if he was hurt, there would be a ton of second guessing, but I do not think you can really manage afraid of that kind of stuff. I think both Maddon and Rizzo said it was a one time deal and Rizzo joked he can retire with a 0.00 ERA.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 17 Jul 23-29

If MLB managers would pitch relievers more than one inning .you would have plenty of pitchers too use at the end of the game or go extra innings.

The other day the Orioles pitched a shutout but Showalter(Pitching change for the sake of pitching change) still used 4 pitchers.

Yeah, there are a lot if 1 inning (if that) guys, there is value for sure to have someone in the pen that can go a few innings. Even with expanded bullpens, the "mop up guy" seems to be a bit of a dying breed. Seems like the want the starters to start (either in the majors or at AAA), maybe a service time concern to keep starters longer at a lower cost. But it is off that there used to be one on a 9 or 10 man staff, but now you really do not see them as much on 12 or 13 man staffs.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 17 Jul 23-29

I think there's a difference between managing afraid and just doing silly stuff that takes unnecessary risk.

Also the deeper problem is that the starters aren't lasting, and you don't want to use your actual relievers in a game that's already lost. The "bullpen game" yesterday was obviously a big fail, but too often the rotation guys are going four or five innings. Getting Darvish back sometime would be a boost, but who knows what he's going to produce. We all had questions about him but trusted the front office when they decided to pursue him instead of Jake. Now the questions are even louder.

Nice to know that the Cubs bench is still better than the Cards' bullpen, though.
