So Ohtani may be activated tomorrow and used exclusively as a DH when the California Angels visit the surging Mariners.

I think the time off helped get him right at the plate. He was looking lost at the plate in the month leading up to the injury. He still has holes in his swing that are attackable by veteran pitchers.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 14 Jul 2-8

After their horrendous start, the Reds have been on a tear of late.

Swept the Tigers
Swept the Cubs
Took 2 of 3 from Atlanta
Came back from 0-2 to split with Milwaukee
Sweeping the Sox
Won 12 of their last 15, and 15 of their last 20

Only 3.5 games behind Pittsburgh (admittedly for 4th place in the Central), but only 9.5 games out of a Wild Card. Not bad for a team that started 3-18,was only 8-27 on May 7th, and was 21 games under .500 on June 9th.

No way they keep it up, but it's been really fun watching them of late.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 14 Jul 2-8

Dexter Fowler is really having a rough go of it in St. Louis

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak on Fowler:

"It's been a frustrating year for everybody involved. Here's a guy that wants to go out and play well. I think he would tell you, it's hard to do that when you're not playing and not playing on a consistent basis. But I've also had a lot of people come up to me and question his effort and his energy level. Those are things that I can't defend. What I can defend is trying to create opportunities for him, but not at the expense of somebody who's out there hustling and playing hard. And I think really everybody just needs to take a hard look in the mirror and decide what they want that next chapter to look like. In Dexter's case, maybe taking a brief timeout, trying to re-assess himself and then give him a chance for a strong second half is probably what's best for everybody. I'm hopeful to touch base with him in the near future and really just decide what makes the most sense, but clearly he's not playing at the level we had hoped."
Ugh. I still have a big soft spot for Fowler.

On the season, Fowler is hitting just. 171 with a .276 on-base percentage and .278 slugging, good for a .554 OPS. Among MLB players with 250 plate appearances, only Baltimore's Chris Davis (.155) has a lower batting average and only Davis (.497) and Kansas City's Alcides Escobar (.518) have a worse OPS.

FanGraphs has Fowler with the 5th-worst WAR in the game (-1.1), ahead of only Davis (-2.0), Victor Martinez (-1.3) and Trayce Thompson (-1.3) and tied with Kole Calhoun (-1.1).

For reference, Fowler put up 7.6 WAR in his two years with the Cubs.

What Cubs fan doesn't have a soft spot for Fowler? That Home Run in game 7 is enough to make him a Cub for life.

That said, I'm glad he is not putting up those numbers for the Cubs.

They got what they paid for last season on the offensive front.

The troubling and almost immediate dip in performance for several big free agent contracts of recent vintage tells me steroids are back in the game. It's quite telling when position players are having very sudden and inexplicable drops in performance.

Only Robinson Cano was apparently stupid enough to keep using once he signed the big contract.

Fowler is suddenly playing like he's 39 years old, instead of turning 32 in the spring.

Great opposite-field hitting in the tying rally today.

No ten runs today but the three run rally was a good example of just going with the pitch.

I wish you were wrong but you are not. That seems to be the case again.

Exactly ... considering Bryant and Rizzo (though he has been hot lately) have not hit anywhere near their career numbers, I have to think once they get going, we will really see the wins pile up.

From what I rad, KB will be back by the end of the week (if not today). I will say though, I like what Bote has done for them ... he looks like he might end up being a pretty good bench player.

Rizzo's average is a real concern but he is making contact when it counts, he on pace for around 115 RBI for the season. I would like like to see him get hot and raise his average.

I am thinking he is about to take off, he has raided the average a decent amount the last few weeks and seems to be using the whole field better .. really the whole team is using the whole field better the last few weeks. Time will tell, very time this season I have thought "here we go, they are about to really take off" they end up dropping 4 in a row.

According to ESPN.com, the Yankees Brett Gardner was fined thousands of dollars for pace of play violations in June.

Does Craig Kimbrel(RP-Red Sox ) get fined everytime there is someone on base and he takes an half-an-hour to deliver the baseball? His wind up should be banned(makes Mariano Rivera's wind up look fast).

Your link goes to ESPN's starting page and not the story.

Big deal, he got fined $3,500 dollars. There is a solution, simply get into the batter's box quicker.

Edit: I looked it up, he only makes 12mil a year so I can see where $3,500 is a major concern.

I'll never get use to the two game series but a sweep is a sweep. Consider how the Tigers have owned the Cubs in interleague play it was nice to sweep.

Baez's swipe of Home was a thing of beauty.

Six in a row and fourteen over .500, both are season highs.

Baez seems to do 2 or 3 things a week in the field or on the base paths where you just wonder how the hell did he do that ... not as dramatic as stealing home, but he had maybe a more impressive slide the other day stretching a single into a double. Slides, tags, throws, taking extra bases, chasing balls down all over the field, etc The guy is fun to watch, especially when he is hitting.

A lot of his plays are aggressive, but he has the talent and instincts to pull them off.

Exactly .. and I think he has gotten better at picking his spots .. but seriously, who the hell else can do things like that on a regular basis .. some of these slides look like they were lifted out of the Matrix.

Remember when he was coming up through the minors, and people were mostly saying "His bat speed is insane because he's always trying to murder the ball"? Now he's showing all sides of his game.

I also remember a lot of people saying he should be trade bait ... I would say now he is about is in the top 3 players on the team I would not trade for anything short of something similar to the Herschel Walker trade in terms of that kind of haul coming back.

Reds take 2 of 3 from the OprahSox. Only 2.5 games out of fourth place.
