New Pro Football League(s) Thread

XFL:
So far no teams announced and no tv contract but Oliver Luck will be commish.
They are supposed to start play in 2020.

Alliance of American Football:

They do have a tv contract with CBS Sports.

Eight teams have been announced with play beginning next year after the SuperBowl.

Orlando
Birmingham
San Antonio(just announced)
Phoenix
Atlanta
Memphis
San Diego
Salt Lake

Looks like they are for the most part avoiding cold weather cities(except for Salt Lake).

Another thing(nothing official) but it looks like they will be going without team nicknames but I haven't read anything that's concrete about that.

Bottomline: If the XFL doesn't do something soon ,they will be just another memory because if the Alliance of American Football is any good then the XFL will have that much more trouble getting up and going.

I read a rumor at another website that a few ex-NFL players might start up a league because they were in St. Louis asking about their stadium. That is all I have heard other than that but many times leagues have been announced but never got off the ground.

... and I expect I shall be watching approximately zero games in either league.

You forgot to mention Flag Football, which will be televised by NFL Network.

Thank goodness NFL network picked it up. I would have hated for it to bump the Cornhole World Championship from ESPN...

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

I think the mistake they will be making would be playing right after the Super Bowl.

The USFL waited awhile so you could get a hunger for pro football.

Time will only tell because less and less people are watching the NFL(I dropped Direct TV so no more NFL Sunday Ticket).

I wonder how the CFL feels about this situation . I am surprised they never tried another USA expansion. They should have stayed with northern cities and it may have worked. Going into cities that knew nothing about Canadian Football was their biggest mistake. It's rare to find one of those games on YouTube.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

CFL did try to expand to the USA. 1993-1995.

I don't care the XFL revival.
But I am interested in the Alliance of America Football because Bill Polian is involved.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

The XFL is doomed?

The second iteration of the XFL could be over before it even begins. The Alliance of American Football (AAF) is gaining steam as it officially announced its sixth team will be in San Diego and will be coached by former NFL offensive coordinator and head coach Mike Martz. That means six of the eight teams have been officially announced. Momentum is building.

The XFL hasnít announced anything since late January and by the time the league gets back in the news it could be too late. The AAF has deals with stadiums. Itís unlikely those stadiums and cities would be able to welcome an XFL franchise. That means Atlanta, Memphis, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and San Diego are off the board. Four of those cities donít have a professional football team in their city. That would have made those cities perfect for the XFL. The AAF beat the XFL to the punch.

Vince McMahon is so desperate not to have "rasslin promoter" on his tombstone that I wouldn't be surprised if he blows his entire fortune on this.

I watched a little of the AFFL (Flag football) game today on NFL Network.

No offense to my employer because they need content for the summer, but it's unwatchable.

If he thinks he can be a viable competitor to the NFL he is high.

He will be lucky if the XFL is as successful as the Arena league and that league folded.

I wish NFL Network had an Classic NFL Films spinoff channel.

I have no desire at this time too watch the NFL Network as it currently stands.

They air old games from 2017 around 10am and midnight PDT and they showed Super Bowl 52 again last Sunday.

I don't think that is his goal. Actually I don't think that has been anyone's goal that has started a new football league in the last 20 years. The XFL is going to run in the NFL offseason. They just want to piggy back on the NFL. I think their aim is to fill the football void and get NFL fans who are jonesing for football in the offseason. Whether it works or not is a different story. But I don't think even Vince McMahon is crazy enough to believe he can put the NFL out of business.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

I love football, so I'll give both leagues a chance.

I liked the USFL when it was around, and the XFL, despite a horrendous start ended up with some really good games after about 5 weeks into the season (which was too late, because most fans had permanently tuned out by then).

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Maybe Vince should have waited a couple years.

if the NFL continues to eliminate more hits and acts of violence maybe the XFL could have filled that niche where the purists could flock to the XFL if they felt the NFL was becoming too soft.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

I do a google search for the new XFL and there is basically nothing going on with the league.

Looks like more and more like it will never get off the ground.

The other new league getting a year's head start can only hurt the XFL.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Four Alliance of American Football teams now have nicknames:
Birmingham Iron
Memphis Express
Orlando Apollos
Atlanta Legends

The XFL is less than 18 months away and have yet too announce one team.

If not for the tiny football in the crown, this could be a WNBA logo.

I guess it could be a WNFL logo then...

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Memphis is clearly naming their team after the FedEx hub. Lol.

And Orlando... why not something like this instead:

Or even...

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

I like all the logos except for Legends. It's too bland.

The USFL had an LA Express, but Memphis Express rolls off the tongue better.

The WFL had the Jacksonville Express. That was in 1975(league folded mid-season).

It's ashame that there is very little as far as video from the WFL(unlike the USFL...see YouTube).
