They play in Utah's stadium, and it's artificial turf, so it's just printed on the playing surface. This league doesn't have the budget to do turf replacement, so that's what you get.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

There is an article over at Forbes where player agent Leigh Steinberg feels that the NFLPA will eventually come around and approve of younger players playing in AAF.

The player's contract say's otherwise unless the NFL becomes part of full time owner of the league.

The XFL doesn't seem to be interested as a feeder league and will sink or swim on it's own(that's my opinion).

Looks like the AAF is going under.

That's a shame.

They never really had a game plan.

The USFL was well run,and they were losing money hand over fist. A minor league football team is just not a profitable venture doesn't matter even if you could get Bill Gates and Warren Buffet running it. Demand will always be niche for something with a costly infrastructure.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

It seems they had the right people in charge like Bill Polian to succeed.

Vince McMahon should have second thoughts about restarting the XFL since that is going to fail too.

Anybody with any brains will not put their money or invest in a startup football league again.

This whole thread shows the immediate consequences of the league "suspending" their operations

It's so crazy that this or any other league would fail like this.
I mean, you have rabid football fans so heartbroken when the NFL season ends, someone gives them more football, and they're like, "MEH"

I know there is much more to it, but man, all fans had to do was show up

That really sucks for all these players. Seems like many won't get paid for the last game they played if the league is basically kicking them out.

Because football requires so many players, the surrounding costs supporting a team are far greater than basketball or baseball.

Even before they played their last game, all the players knew that is was possible that it would be their last game while risking injury and not knowing if they would have medical coverage afterwards.

I considered arena football as a totally different sport.

Different scenario. The CFL's been around for a very long time and is being played in a different country.

However, we saw what happened when the CFL expanded into the US - total failure. So the CFL basically suffered the same fate in the US.
Which is why I find it funny when CFL fans get excited that a few of their games are aired on ESPN thinking it'll help generate more revenue for the league and grow the game further. The reality is Americans don't care about the CFL as well as any other non-NFL/NCAA football league.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

They(CFL) didn't go into the right cities(except Baltimore).

They should have had a certain amount season tickets sold or a city wouldn't get a team.

I am sure it would have worked in the Northern USA(Boston,Syracuse,PortlandOR or ME,Detroit,Milwaukee) where more people knew about the CFL but decided to go into cities that never heard of the CFL.

The quality of the games is just a huge step down from the NFL. Nobody wants to see minor league football.

JMO of course, but I think after watching all the college football bowl games and playoffs, then watching all the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl, people have had their fill of football for awhile. That's why I don't think a spring football league will ever catch on.

Plus the NFL offseason is so much bigger (free agency, draft, etc) than it was when the USFL got some degree of traction in the 80s. It's essentially a year-round league now.

This definitely played a factor - although I suspect it wouldn't have made THAT big a difference in the end.
I always though starting the spring league right after the Super Bowl was dumb. You need to give people a chance to miss the game first. As you stated, NCAA and the NFL - that's a lot of football.
After a couple months, football fans may start to get that craving - but that presents another problem with MLB starting up - all the while the NHL and NBA are heading into their playoffs. Too much competition.

I just don't see a scenario where another pro football league can work.

If Vince MacMahon was smart - he'd just bail and be grateful that he was beaten to the punch by the AAF. It's better to learn from someone else's mistakes than your own.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

I do wish someone could make a football minor/developmental league that worked. Guys come out of college (not the top draft picks, obviously) and get a training camp and preseason or two to show their worth. That's it. If they don't catch on, it's career over at 24.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

The problem is finding decent QB play for a minor league. The NFL itself only has 15-25 competent QBs in any given year. Pro-style QBs don't grow on trees, and anyone with real arm talent is already in the NFL as a starter or back-up.
