Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Besides their TV contracts ,what money does the AAF have coming in?

It certainly isn't season ticket sales.

That's why I question going into smaller markets.

If they want to stay on the minor league level then they will need help from the NFL.

Pep Hamilton was named first head coach for Washington(XFL).

Hopefully they call them the Washington Federals.

They weren't too successful in the USFL but they were my favorite team.

Johnny Manziel released by the CFL. Where will he go next? AAF? XFL, INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE?

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

^ I'm surprised to see Dayton on that list. The only football facility there is at UD, which is too small for "pro" football, and too big for the # of Daytonians who would show up for games in February and March.

Columbus? Sure. Ditto for Louisville and Omaha, though I -do- question the viability of any cold-weather sites. One of the strengths the AAF has is that all of their sites are southern, a feature that sites like Des Moines, Portland, and the Ohio cities don't enjoy. So, if those 8 are the only cities being considered (which I doubt), then it's ABQ, SDF, OKC and (I guess) OMA.

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Omaha was probably the strongest franchise in the UFL.

If they decide to put a team in Ohio then have them play both in Columbus and Dayton.

They could probably play football at the Dayton(Midwest League ) stadium because that's what Omaha did(played in a Triple A stadium),

They seem to want smaller cities while the XFL wants bigger cities with a bigger fan base.

Don't know why Minnesota,Chicago,Milwaukee and Detroit haven't been in the discussion for any of the new pro football leagues(should the other ones ever get off the ground).

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

There has been talk the last few days that Bill Pollian has been in contact with the NFL about the possibility of loaning NFL players to the AAF.

However, there was an article on Yahoo Sports saying according to the NFL player contract that might be illegal.

Then the XFL might also get involved(lawsuits) if they are unable to get loaned players.

So whatever play's out should be interesting.

If the NFL acquired the AAF then none of the above would matter.

I am sorry for dissing the Hot Shots name.

I did not know they were named after the firefighters who lost their lives.

Is expansion really the smart move right now?

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

Getting more financial backing would be the smart move.

However,I do believe they should have started with 12 teams. Eight teams is too small and after awhile is get's tiring watching the same teams.

Starting off with 8 teams is fine for a brand new league. It'll take time for the supporters to know anything about the teams, so it'll take a while for them to get sick of them.
The CFL has had between 8 and 9 teams for its existence, and they're still alive - although it's definitely a downside to the league.

I don't see how the league is still in business. I watched just a few minutes of a game on Sunday, and they weren't many people in the stands.

If the NFL buys them(AAF) then a 16 team league would be the perfect set up.

I thought the CFL wants to put a team in Halifax?

Don't know why they(CFL) never put a team in Windsor,ONT/Detroit area.

That's still a long shot, but even if it went through - 10 teams is still too small... especially for a league that's been around for over 60 years.

Detroit's got a football team and a team in all the other leagues, don't see them supporting an inferior league from a different country - and I don't thing Windsor and the surround areas could support one either.

Manziel(according to ESPN website) has signed an AAF players contract. Looks like San Antonio(his rights holder) will pass on his service's.

He is officially going to Memphis.

San Antonio held his geographic rights due to him being from one of those Texas schools (sorry, I forget which specific one). Birmingham had 2nd "dibs" due to him having been an Alouette up in the CFL. And would've also had 3rd "dibs" due to him having been last on the Current Cleveland Browns' roster before leaving for the CFL. So I'm surprised Memphis is on the radar. Oh well, at 1-5 the Express really don't have much to lose by bringing that clown in.

The AAF might fold if it doesn't get younger players from the NFL.

Needs NFLPA approval because current NFL player contracts prohibit players from playing in other leagues.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Why would the NFL allow their contracted players to risk injury in the AAF and what incentive do they have to help them when they already have a free feeder system in the NCAA?

Re: New Pro Football League(s) Thread

The NFL for years has talked about a minor league system but they have been too busy counting their own money.

For some reason they don't want too take that chance.

A league could run side by side to the NFL (play games in the middle of the week). However, the NFL is so in love with TNF that will never happen.

What happens now with the XFL if they pull the plug on the AAF?

I can't see them(XFL) being successful either plus they are in bigger markets and in bigger stadiums and paying top dollar to play in the stadiums and have already spent a lot of money and they have yet too play a game.

I doubt if The Freedom Football League will ever play a game.
