Black Monday - 2017 season -- Which NFL coaches will resign or be fired on 1/1/18?

Sunday is the last week of the 2017 regular season.

Been a weird year in the NFL. So which coaches do you think are headed to the unemployment line, retirement or will become coordinators next season because they need a job?

I think Chuck Pagano, Marvin Lewis and John Fox are the 3 most obvious. Everything else is up in the air.

My guess:

Pagano, Fox, Lewis, Caldwell, and Arians will be gone one way or another.

One name not listed is Mike Mularkey, he will be gone if the titans lose to the Jags.

ESPN is saying that the Raiders are reaching out and dangling an ownership share to Gruden, so figure Del Rio is gone. Also I picked Arenas, Fox, Lewis and Pagano.

I will say everyone on the list except for Joseph (Broncos) Jay Gruden (Redskins) and Arians (Cardinals)

It would be foolish for the Raiders to fire Del Rio. The man is a very good coach - and the best they've had since Gruden left!

The problems they've had this year are due to the roster. Del Rio isn't the GM.

I think Joseph is out. He seemed over his head at times during the season. Yes, the QB play was atrocious and some of that is on Elway, but he had a very solid roster overall.

Mike McCarthy is safe, but GB is reportedly going to let Dom Capers go.

I believe Lewis, Pagano, Del Rio, Fox and Caldwell will be given their walking papers.

Joseph and Arians are on the fence.

Jackson is safe.

How does Marvin Lewis still have a job?

Mike Brown's loyalty *and* frugality. No way Mike pays two coaches at the same time, and Mike has always placed personal feelings toward a coach or player ahead of doing what's best for the team. Also, remember that the Brown family's ONLY source of income is the team. Sure, they all want to win games and championships, but the only thing that's really important is the bottom line. If they have a mediocre 7-9 team, and it it costs more money to turn them into a playoff team than they'll get back in terms of revenue, they're going to almost always choose mediocrity...

Mike remembers what his Dad got when he let Sam Wyche play out the final year of his contract AFTER going 4-11 in 1987. Mike was probably hoping that Marvin would lead the team to the playoffs or Super Bowl during his final year and get it without having to spend any additional family money. Look for Mike to offer Marvin a job in the front office (the team has never had a General Manager) and then hire a new head coach for next year.... and unfortunately, that new HC will undoubtedly be either an inside hire/promotion or someone whom Mike has worked with before.

The Raiders have their eye on a much bigger prize, Jon Gruden.

The Raiders had a down year because Carr got hurt again and Cooper had a bad year. It really wasn't Del Rio's fault. That would be a huge shame if he gets canned 1 year after having the best year the team had in 14 years. Plus, Carr got hurt late last year and they had no decent QB entering the playoffs.

I will vote Pagano at a minimum, since he was just fired.

Tomorrow should be interesting.

No surprise with Pagano. A little surprised with Del Rio, but it's the nature of the business I guess. They came into this year coming off a 12-4 year and had a massively disappointing year. Probably want a fresh clean slate so close to the eventual move to Las Vegas.

Re: Black Monday - 2017 season -- Which NFL coaches will resign or be fired on 1/1/18

Going with 8

Fired (Reported):

Ben McAdoo (NYG)
Chuck Pagano (Colts)
Jack Del Rio (Raiders)

Fired (Rumored):

John Fox (Bears)
Jim Caldwell (Lions)
Marvin Lewis (Bengals)
Mike Mularkey (Titans - if they lose Week 17) they won.
Vance Joseph (Broncos)
Bruce Arians (Cardinals; rumored to be stepping down but will confer with his wife before making decision)

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam reportedly told new GM John Dorsey that Hue Jackson would return as head coach with no debate.
Sorry Brown fans.I think Hue Jackson would be better at GM.

If the Gruden to OAK thing is true, there is now way they could have complied with the Rooney Rule.

Texans GM Rick Smith is taking an extended leave of absence to be with his wife. Looks like Bill O’Brien won the battle between the two.

He gave Smith's wife cancer? Sounds like he would have left regardless of what is going on there.

I’m just gonna assume Jim Caldwell’s Monday meeting is gonna go something like this:

Coach Caldwell, just blink twice if you want to remain the Lions’ head coach

Jim! Blink twice. Ok just do it once. Coach? Hello?

....oh well, happy trails!
