Report: The XFL may be returning

This guy broke the story. I guess he's a freelance wrestling writer.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...l-coming-back/

Pro Football Talk and Mike Florio went with it and attributed their story to him. So, there appears to be some credence to his story.

Yeah ok Vince, strike while the iron is hot because you were reminded how you failed while filming a documentary. Does he feel like the whole kneeling thing is opening up the doors for this or something? The only football league endorsed by President Trump?

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

if he does I hope he can learn from his mistakes. I.E:

Keep anything even remotely wrestling related away from it. That includes Vince himself.

No gimmicky/ Jerry Springer/reality tv related stuff.

Don't own every team. I don't know who would want to buy an XFL team, but one guy can't own every team in the league.

Make it as NFL centric as possible.

Then again, even if he did all that it would still probably fail.

He doesn't need to use the reality gimmicks anymore. All he has to do is allow everything the NFL has banned since the XFL folded.

I think you can guarantee that players will be required to stand.

The more I kind of thought about this I don't think a revamped XFL could even do that. If you look at the WWE since the beginning of the PG Era, they did away with the violence from the Attitude Era. WWE put the same emphasis on Wrestlers safety, so I doubt they would have the type of hitting and tackling that has been all but banned by the NFL.

A little more information, Vince has established a separate company called "Alpha Entertainment" to explore investments into other sports and entertainment prospects that includes Professional Football.

If it returns hopefully they'll know what is or is not a catch.

They will be lucky if one of the 4 major broadcast networks gives them a TV deal.

Maybe the games will air on Destination America or the Outdoor Network.

Move the Bills to this new league.

I heard last year the NFL is looking into a developmental league. Is that still happening?

Two different types of business though, not to mention wrestling was watered down because of their stock offerings.

I wasn't even thinking of hits though, but the ridiculous rules about taunting/celebrating, not to mention on field dress codes, which we have seen the last decade or so in the NFL.

Basically use the same rules the NFL played under 20 years ago, before the league went all pass happy.

Keep the league very small, possibly no more than six teams. Call it Retro Ball or something.

Are you hoping that they keep the concussions and injuries down because of the inferior level of athletes they'll have or something? Otherwise I'd think under old rules there would be even more injuries.

I agree with most of the points you make, but every single thing you said goes against everything Vince stands for, every single thing.

Did the Big6 that basketball league with all the retired superstar NBA players fail?

A retro XFL might not work.

Maybe they can force all the XFL guys to stand up for the anthem so all the dorks who abandoned the NFL can watch this league.

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

Anything under 12 teams would be too boring.

Put teams in mostly non-NFL cities with a few NFL cities(Detroit,Chicago,Boston,Philly).

Play CFL rules.

Play championship game against CFL(that might be hard too do if they play in the Spring).

My suggestion would be to play shorter games to alleviate injury concerns. So many bad injuries occur in the fourth quarter, when every player is exhausted.

Four ten-minute quarters?

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

The biggest reason the XFL failed was because there was no talent. When Tommy Maddox is the best you have - you don't have much.

So it doesn't matter what the rules changes are. It doesn't matter how it's presented. It doesn't matter if the players have to stand. If Vince tries this again, it'll fail unless they can find about 500 pro-caliber players.

Or get Tebow.

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

The USFL did OK while it lasted because many of the top prospects chose it over the NFL. Including multiple eventual HoF QB's. Without top level players, there is no league.

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

It took the AFL about 5 years before it began developing talent..

However at that time there was such a hunger for pro football it didn't matter as far as AFL caliber of play was concerned.

The USFL expanded too fast.

The WFL had the right idea of playing in the middle of the week.

I'd love to see some form of football that predated a lot of the "No Fun League" type of rules, but I think it would still fail.

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

There are more players in college football than there are jobs in the NFL. Plus there are still many unsigned free agents who are roaming around. I'm sure they would all kill to have an opportunity like the XFL (if it happens)

So there won't be a shortage of players. It's just a matter of how they market the product.

Re: Report: The XFL may be returning

The NFL really needs to figure a way to get a development league going, while I know NCAA is essentially it right now and maybe occasionally Arena Football or the CFL ... an actual league, even with a short schedule playing with NFL rules would be beneficial for football. I have to think there is enough talent out there that develops late/recovers from injury, etc that would benefit some players and the league as a whole. Not to mention refs and coaches.

Not to mention there are literally more football time slots on tv then in 2001 and btwn the NFL and college football you could literally watch a game almost every day btwn Late August-Jan. Their is literally more supply of football then their was in 2001.
