It bodes well for a couple of reasons.

If Martinez were not to make it in this year, having a committee that is primarily made up of baseball lifers shows the writers what career baseball people think of the DH. It could sway future votes.

Let's say Martinez is never voted in by the writers, he would most likely get in by this committee down the road.

As for Smith, his unanimous select by the committee is in a way a big FU to the writers.

He's getting in. He was over 70% last ballot. Historically everyone who hits that number before their final year of eligibility gets voted in.

the key number is that he has gained 6 votes from last year (ie only 24 of those voters had him last year). Needs to gain 20 votes overall.

Can we officially say that this new ERA committee has fucked things over for the Hall of Fame standards with Baines induction? I mean, this is akin to the Academy Awards trying to put in the Best Popular Film category at the next show.

Not really, like if say Steve Garvey or Don Mattingly's(not saying this will happen to them or anyone else necessarily) teammates are part of the next new Era committee with em on the ballot, they were gonna throw Hall Of Gooder's like them in whether Baine's gets inducted or not. It does shine a light though on how incredibly nepotistic some of these veteran's committee picks in any era always are. In all honesty I just wish all those Whitesox voter's were part of a panel 5-10 years ago so Minnie Minoso could have gotten in.
