The guys who make themselves really prominent in the media seem to get a boost over other guys.

Yep, Alex Cora was also on ESPN before becoming a coach/manager.

My understanding is that the national media guys get inside access to all thirty clubs when they do their games, so they often have insights no one else can get. They know many players around the league and talk to management as well.

Re: MLB 2017-18 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

I am cool with this if he is the 5th starter .. his numbers away from Coors are good .. 1 down, 1 to go for the rotation.

CHICAGO -- The Cubs may have filled one of the holes in their starting rotation on Thursday, signing free-agent right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood to a three-year, $38 million contract.

Chatwood, 27, was 8-15 with a 4.69 ERA in 33 games (25 starts) last season with the Rockies, and he will most likely appreciate not having to pitch at Coors Field. He was 3-8 with a 6.01 ERA in 17 games (12 starts) in Denver last season, while going 5-7 with a 3.49 ERA in 16 games (13 starts) on the road.

I'm OK with it too. Hope he's better than whoever they got last year who used to be on the Dodgers.

I wonder how that affects their interest in Alex Cobb, who is likely going to make more than Chatwood. I guess you hold out a glimmer of hope for Ohtani and hope that Cobb doesn't go somewhere in the meantime, unless they're looking to fill the spot via trade. If they're serious about dealing Russell or Baez, I assume that would be for a starter rather than a reliever.

It's a very smart signing with lots of upside for a free agent deal. Chatwood is a solid pitcher that has been stuck on bad teams and in Colorado.

I wish Theo was my team's GM.

Chatwood is an excellent addition to the Cubs' staff.

Spoiler:
I only say this because he's 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in 4 career appearances against the Cardinals.

Marlins reportedly trade Dee Gordon to the Mariners, who would play him in CF.

Re: MLB 2017-18 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Reports are that Mariners are paying all of Gordon's contract and giving up three minor leaguers, including their top pitcher. They also get $1 million in international money along with some other money they got in an earlier trade today.

So they're going all-in for Ohtani and for making the most of their current window (this is the last year on Cruz's contract) before their key players get any older.

Re: MLB 2017-18 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

Glad he didn't go to the Dodgers.

Would've liked him to go to the Cubs but always figured it was a longshot.

The Mariners are the big losers here. They clear international money and are one of the final contenders, but then he goes elsewhere in their division when they're already looking up at the Astros.

I wonder how much of a factor it was that he's not the top banana in Anaheim, but the likely second banana. With the Dodgers and Cubs, he would've been in a sea of stars, and clearly the guy wants to test himself.

The Angels seemed like the team to go to with the least hate, expectations, or potential drama

Guy's only 23. It will be interesting to see (1) if he's any good and (2) how his path to free agency progresses.

Re: MLB 2017-18 Off-Season & Hot Stove Thread

In the worst case scenario he becomes the second coming of Yu Darvish. His stuff is very comparable to Darvish's stuff and supposedly he idolizes Darvish.

Most don't think he will hit well enough to justify playing both ways. Unless he hits the ground running in MLB and starts out as an above-average hitter immediately, there will be serious pressure for Ohtani to drop hitting.

The Japanese league is somewhere between our AA and AAA levels in talent. The big difference over there is that starters only pitch once a week.

I have always seen it described as AAA+, not between double and triple A.

Doesn't look like it's anything other than cash, looks like they'll have to move Castro.

My hatred for Yankees sort of waned over time but getting Stanton ramps that right back up.

One thing about this deal I didn't think of. It effectively kills a Harper to Yanks deal in future.
