Generally, I'm a fan of the 2 wild card team set up but it sucks that the team that may very well have the second best record in the league will have to play a play-in game.

Though before the WC, the team with the second-best record in the league could get shut out entirely.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

The Dodgers have been in freefall since AGon came back and Bellinger was moved to the outfield. It didn't help that Bellinger got injured almost immediately after AGon came back.

I warned everyone about Darvish. He hadn't looked very good for two months with the Rangers, which is why a team still in the playoff race dumped him.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

Brewers/Rockies lose. And the Cardinals Memphis Redbirds win once more. Now 2 back of Colorado.

Carpenter is hurt. Wong is hurt. Pham is hurt. Gyorko is hurt. Wainwright is hurt. Rosenthal is hurt.

They get rid of Peralta, Adams, Leake, Siegrist, Broxton, Fryer.

And now they make a run. Baseball is a strange game.

Colorado isn't going to make it. I don't know who gets that second wild card, but it won't be Colorado. Their pitching as most expected has fallen apart. Colorado has never been the same since Holland lost it in the middle of the year. He went from premier closer to garbage fairly quickly.

Hey man, let me enjoy this. First time they've swept a series in LA in like a decade and first time they've won the season series against them in many years.

Even if you guys don't win the Division, you've got to have TONS of confidence coming out of the Wild Card game that you could take 2 of three from this team. And you're clearly in their heads now.

Even Kershaw is not immune to the Dodger funk, giving up a 3-run bomb to Arenado in the first inning. I haven't minded the Dodgers skid, but they need to beat the Rockies.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

Contreras had a rehab start yesterday in Class A ball ... sounds like he might be back next week. As well as Avila and Rivera have played, it will be good to have him back ... I am guessing another 3 catchers on the post season roster (4 if you count Schwarber ... which I really would not, but I guess in a pinch he could do it)

I know Madden likes the flexibility, but I'd rather not carry Rivera if it'd mean losing a bullpen arm or a better bat like LaStella.

Happy to salvage a split after how the Pirates series began.

.
Same here, especially knowing Schwarber can catch if needed.

I think we will know when Wilson comes back and if he catches Lester (Rivera seems to be the Lester catcher right now).

Both Avila and Rivera have been a big help. Avila is on a one-year $2M contract so I assume he leaves rather than be a backup, and I can't blame him.

The team is still prone to fits and starts, but at least they're managing to score runs without always relying on homers.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

It has been an up and down season, but it beats the hell out of the all down seasons.

I am skeptical of them being able to win the WS again this year ... but I am not overly upset about it. These guys are fun to watch play ... and I am watching them as much as I can. I think I took the Bulls for granted ... not doing that with the Cubs or Hawks. I am going to enjoy these windows of being good, because when they close (with rare exceptions), they close for a long time

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

Yes, it sure beats decades of shitty baseball.

I agree that it would only be a mild disappointment if they didn't win this year, whereas it would've been crushing last year. Winning the WS for the first time in one's lifetime goes a long way. Now if we're 10 years down the road and they never won another after having such a good young core, that would be pretty disappointing. But baseball is a funny game.

I've been traveling a lot this summer and haven't seen as many games as last year, but there's a huge stretch of Brewers-Cardinals games coming up that I'll try to catch.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

Trust me, the afterglow from a World Series win only lasts a fan about a decade or so. By 2010, I had already started giving my Braves a shorter and shorter rope.

Exactly .. I think they should do similar to what the Hawks have done ... win somewhere in the 2-4 range (more better of course) ... while Rizzo/Bryant/etc are still in their prime.

But if 1 is all there is, that is 1 more than I ever expected to see. So, I'm cool ... as I gaze into my Cubs Christmas tree still sitting on my desk.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 23 Sep 4-10 "Labor Day Edition"

The Baltimore Orioles after activating SS JJ Hardy(w/his horrid .211 batting avg.) received permission from MLB to print Play-off and World Series ticket's..............NOT !!!

Also Buck Showalter went back on his word when earlier he was asked who his starting shortstop would be when JJ Hardy returned and he said JJ Hardy. It might be the first time in Showalters career that he didn't kiss a veteran's player's ass and instead started a younger ,better and more versatile (or something) player (Tim Beckham).

The Indians winning streak will continue tonight since Wade Miley is pitching for the Orioles. In other words it will be a bullpen game for the Orioles.
