Fantasy Football Talk 2017

With leagues forming and Ezekiel Elliott getting suspended, I figured we might as well start this year's thread.

Zeke is out what, 6 games? I wonder if he'd be a good late pickup or if he'll be rusty. Who's his replacement?

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

He'll still go way earlier than you should be comfortable taking a guy who's going to miss six weeks, it's mainly people convinced they'll make the playoffs anyway and then they'll have a stud. Or the guy on autodraft who's just completely out of touch takes him in the first.

McFadden and Morris are the probable backups, as fantasy luck will have it the one you don't pick up will run away with the job.

Luck really scares me too, I doubt his draft stock has fallen sufficiently, though hopefully we'll know more in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of, did Leveon Bell get his annual suspension to start the season yet?

Edited to add: looking into it a little seems like people are still picking up Elliot in the second round.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Elliott has appealed his suspension. Second round seems nuts to me, but I guess people are hoping it'll be reduced. And fact is we all know how thin the RB crop gets when you get into the 20s.

He's going to be the poster child for Elliott drafters who saw Bell miss games but still put up top-3 numbers.

If I was lucky to get 1 or 2 and start off with DJ or Bell, it would be awfully hard for me to resist taking Zeke if he was still there for my 2nd pick.

Elliott won't serve more than 4 games --- if that.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Having a tough time deciding whether to franchise Jordy Nelson or Jordan Howard.
Nelson is my safe bet, but there are so few good RBs these days that aren't part of a committee, I can't help but be tempted by Howard's potential. However there's the probable sophomore slump, and the Bears are hurting that the QB position, so defenses will stack the box to limit Howard's production.

Damn you fantasy football! DAMN YOU!!!

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

I thought the same thing of him heading into last year's draft. He came out of nowhere at the end of 2015 to put up good numbers, but Jeremy Langford was better overall and started the year as the #1...but Howard took over shortly after and produced all season under the same circumstances: no threat at QB, average OL. Underwhelming WR corp. I'm sold on the guy, he's legit (by the way this will be his 3rd season, not 2nd).

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

That's a tricky one because so many RBs turn out to be flashes in the pan. Is this a potentially long-term franchise slot? Howard's age is an obvious plus there.

It's an long-running league in which we always get to franchise two players each year. My three best players from last year were Antonio Brown, Jordy Nelson and Jordan Howard. I decided to keep Brown and Howard. It was very tempting to keep Nelson instead of Howard, but I decided to roll the dice with Howard, hoping he can pull off a Matt Forte impression for the next few years. The number of top tier RBs (not in a committee) are down to about half a dozen.

Makes sense. It's easier to drop Jordy when you already have Brown.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

First 7 picks from the person who had the #1 overall pick in my draft tonight:

Aaron Rodgers
DeSean Jackson
Texans D/ST
Mark Ingram
Andrew Luck
LANCE KENDRICKS
CJ Prosise

Might be thinking it must be a free league. Nope, $50 entry.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Yesterday I was browsing through ESPN's fantasy room, and clearly I wasn't understanding what I was doing. Because I log into ESPN today and it says I'm a member of 2 public leagues I never even heard of (with completely autodrafted teams from something like 3 in the morning) I guess for 2 leagues, that terrible deadbeat manager who autodrafts and then never does a damn thing all season ... is going to be me

Did a "Friends and Family" draft and hate how it turned out. I was able to get Zeke Elliot in the 3rd round (after starting with keepers David Johnson and OBJ), but then screwed up just about every other round of the draft. That's what I get for not doing any mocks and not really making the time for prep work until the afternoon of the draft.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Deadbeat!

I have my last draft tomorrow, with some of my closest friends, and I feel completely unprepared. I messed up my previous draft due to being distracted and struggling with Yahoo's interface (I've used it in previous years, and did a couple mocks), but it's mostly because I haven't put in the time on the research. This may be a complete bust year, but then it's fantasy football, so maybe I'll have my best year yet!

I can blame the interface too. I was co-drafting with a friend on speakerphone (who had done even less research than me). And to avoid confusion, I told him that he's doing all the button pushing for selections. Rounds 1 and 2 were the keepers (that's how ESPN does it) and round 3 was Zeke, who I put in the queue. For round 4, we were debating between Kareem Hunt (who was my preference), Tom Brady (who I never had on a fantasy team before, and was tempting), or Devante Parker (who I thought was best WR available). And just before time for the pick ran out I see the message: "You have selected Keenan Allen".

Me: "What did you do?!?"

My friend: "I don't know!!!"

Please tell me Keenan Allen could be good this year. What I know is that he seems to miss most of every year (which makes me wonder how ESPN's default ranking for him could be that high).

Somehow ended up with 3 parts of the Panthers passing game (Cam, Kelvin, and Olsen) which doesn't seem like a winning play. And with Zeke, I lost out on McFadden (someone took him in round 7, right before I was planning to). But not to worry, because for picking up the RB slack in the early part of the season I have ... Doug Martin (with his own 3 game suspension)! And of course, someone else picked Quiz Rodgers (pretty much right after my own Martin selection).

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

One of the things I have heard is that the Panthers want to be run-heavy with McCaffrey this year, if that's any consolation.

I drafted Zeke myself after I'd drafted Gordon because he was high on the Yahoo board at the time, but it didn't feel like good value. Add to that Jordan Reed, and Yahoo auto-drafting me a kicker and a defense in the middle rounds when I popped out to respond to something, and I have a real boom-or-bust crew.

Forgot to mention that I might not even make tomorrow's draft if I end up at a meeting. I did edit my preferences to take K/D in the large rounds.

Thanks! And the general consensus of Kelvin Benjamin this year seems to be "fat" and "avoid".

Also on this team is Adrian Peterson, since my co-manager really wanted him. I immediately made the prediction that he'll be our highest draft pick dropped from our team.

Ah well, it's just for fun. And winning the championship in this league last year makes it seem like this year is playing with house money.

Are you still teamed with that annoying co-manager? Winning heals many wounds, I guess.

The co-manager wasn't the problem. It was the other people in the league. And you're right ... winning last year healed the wounds Despite the problems in the league, it's still a good way to keep in touch with people.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Most of the "in the know" fantasy guys are not saying avoid Benjamin. He is great value if you can get him at his ADP of the 6th round. He is in shape.

As for Keenan Allen he is basically 1st round talent, if he can stay healthy. With Rivers chucking the ball, he should be a top 10 WR if he stays healthy.

FF is indeed a good community builder/sustainer. Glad all is well in the brainee league.

Yeah, I spent a good chunk on Allen in my auction league. Rolled the dice though I have Antonio and OBJ as keepers. Went for depth in a PPR.

I don't know about Benjamin. He is the hot guy for the experts. Not sure I see it. Carolina offense is hard to judge. I was happy to get to get Olsen in the 10th (with a good number of keepers out ahead so it was really more like a 11th) in my other league, though non-PPR in that one. Hope the TDs go his way this year.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

I haven't seen any expert who is extremely high on Benjamin, but it is impossible to read everything. But I've seen several guys who are jumping all over him in the 6th and 7th rounds, since he is slipping that far. At that point, he's basically your #2/#3 WR or a flex play who is the #1 WR for his team, so you should be in good shape already.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2017

Glad to hear my WRs aren't as bad as I thought I did pick KB in the 6th round. Though I picked Olsen in the 5th (wow that he lasts until 10th for some). After Gronk, Kelce, Reed, and Olsen, it seems TE drops off a lot. For what it's worth, this is what I drafted (with round taken in parentheses ... keepers counted for my picks in the first 2 rounds):

QB: Cam (9), Winston (12)
RB: DJ (keeper), Zeke (3), APeterson (7), CJA (8), Martin (10)
WR: OBJ (keeper), KAllen (4), KBenjamin (6), J Matthews (11), J Brown (13)
TE: Olsen (5)
K: Tucker (14)
DST: I'm streaming matchups

We only have to start 2 WRs (and there's a R/W/T flex), so I hope what I have is enough. If I can ride out those RB suspensions with a halfway decent record I'll feel good about my chances. And yeah ... I didn't notice my backup QB had the same bye as my starter. Like I told you ... far from my best prepared draft.

I had Edelman go down in one league. Then Meredith in another. Then Snead got a DUI and suspended.

Great start
