Re: 2017 MLB Week 19 Aug 7-13

Just saw this news

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...ls-dies-age-68

Quote:
Don Baylor, who won MVP with Angels and World Series with Twins, dies at 68

Don Baylor, the 1979 American League MVP, died Monday of cancer. He was 68.

"Don passed from this earth with the same fierce dignity with which he played the game and lived his life," his wife, Rebecca, said in a statement.

Baylor played for the Orioles, Athletics, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox and Twins over a 19-year baseball career. He was an All-Star and the MVP winner with the Angels in 1979, when he led the majors in RBIs and runs.

He reached the World Series three straight times at the end of his career from 1986 to 1988 and won the title with the Twins in 1987.

Baylor batted .260 with 338 home runs and 1276 RBIs in his career. He led the majors seven times in being hit by pitches during a season, including taking 35 of them in 1986 with the Red Sox. He drew 267 HBPs in his career.

After his playing career, Baylor served as the manager of the Colorado Rockies for their inaugural season in 1993. He was the team's skipper for six seasons and took the Rockies to their first postseason appearance in 1995, when he also was named National League Manager of the Year. Baylor is one of four men, along with Frank Robinson, Joe Torre and Kirk Gibson, to win both an MVP and Manager of the Year award, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Baylor also managed the Chicago Cubs from 2000 to 2002.

He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 14 years ago, according to his family. He partnered with former Yankees pitcher Mel Stottlemyre to increase awareness and promote research into the disease.

Baylor is survived by his wife, son Don Jr. and two granddaughters.

News of these former players passing away serve to remind me of my own age.

I remember Baylor coming up through the Orioles farm system. Back in 1971 the Rochester Red Wings(Orioles AAA team) were better than half the teams in the AL and Baylor could have played OF for any team in the AL except the Orioles. Merv Rettenmund was the Orioles fourth outfielder .

Baylor was a feared hitter in his day. He literally wouldn't flinch when getting hit by a pitch. He'd stick his stomach or butt out and take the pitch.

Daulton was a fan favorite here in Philly as the last time he made an appearance at the Phillies Wall of Fame Ceremony he was in remission a few years ago. Even though that 1993 Phillies team lost to Toronto in the World Series, I would argue they are more beloved then the 2008 Phillies with guys like Daulton, Kruk, Dykstra, Incaviglia, Mitch Williams, as they were all throw-backs.

Cards back at .500 for the first time in over 2 months. Since no one else seems to be interested in winning the Central, they should just go ahead and do so.

Orioles also back to .500.

I am still not impressed with the Yankees. Their infield reminds me of the 1967 Yankees. Although Headley is improving with the bat .

As bad as the Orioles have played this season, they aren't far away from a wildcard spot.

Really sad about Baylor and Daulton. 2 really good players, I probably watched Baylor play more, mostly in his Angel days .. hell of a hitter.

That certainly seems to be the case. I still think the Cubs will be able to beat up enough patsies to take the division, though.

Those guys WERE all throwbacks. I like thinking of them that way.

I have a soft spot for Baylor not only because of what he did with the bat (and getting beaned), but because he was one of a string of "best available" managers the Cubs brought in before and after the turn of the century (that's 21st century, wiseasses! ) to try to change their fortunes. He didn't have the success of Dusty Baker, but he didn't burn his bridges with me like Dusty did either.

Though searching for Baylor beanball gifs reminded me of this unfortunate incident:

Went to the game yesterday, even at AT&T the cheering that went on when the Cubs did something positive was very noticeable. There were a lot of out of town Cubs fans at the game.

Since the Giants are down this year a lot of great season tickets are up on Stubhub. My ticket retailed for over $200 dollars but I picked it up yesterday for $35 dollars.

That's a great deal, especially on Metallica night.

That would be like getting hit over 100 times in a season nowadays.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 19 Aug 7-13

I do think some umpires need to be suspended for becoming too vocal and in your face against managers and players. They have a chip on their shoulder, but I don't agree with this suspension. He was just giving his opinion in an article. It wasn't even on the field. I want them booted for being a-hole on the field. I hate when umpires seek to become part of the drama on the field.

Joe West suspended three games for calling Adrian Beltre MLB's 'biggest complainer'

Quote:
Fans want athletes, coaches and even umpires to be honest with their comments to the media. However, the tricky thing is that raw and un-cut opinions often times have negative consequence.

Joe West, who just umpired his 5,000th career game, felt the brunt of this dichotomy on Tuesday with MLB handing out a three-game suspension for his comments about Rangers third basemen Adrian Beltre in a USA today article published June 20. West was asked who the “biggest complainer” was in his experience behind the plate, and the 64-year-old had no qualms about calling out the newest member of the 3,000-hit club.

“It’s got to be Adrian Beltre. Every pitch you call that’s a strike, he says, “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!’ I had a game with him recently and the pitch was right down the middle. He tells me, ‘That ball is outside.’ “I told him, ‘You may be a great ballplayer, but you’re the worst umpire in the league. You stink.”
The World Umpires Association came out in defense of the longtime umpire, whose suspension began with Tuesday’s games.

“Joking interactions between umpires and players are a routine part of the game,” the union said in a statement. “We disagree strongly with the decision to punish Joe West simply for sharing a humorous exchange with a player.”

Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy will undergo chemo soon for lung cancer. Not expected to return this season. He says that he likely got sick from smoking since he was a teenager.

Sad news in the baseball world this past week.

Wilson Contreras left the game with what looks like a hamstring injury while he was trying to beat out a throw at first ... did not look good. Getting Avila is looking like a much better move now

Hopefully he will not be out too long the way he has been hitting, but a DL stint looks to be in the offing

These Player's Weekend (8/25-8/27) uniforms, I'm not too fond of (except the Philly cap logo which is AWESOME).

I do like some of the nickname jerseys though

I'm not usually a fan of gimmicks, but I like this one.

Cards win again. 5 in a row. 1.5 back.
