What purpose do they serve in getting him? Unless they want him long term, which they could easily do in off season, they basically gave up 3 prospects for the chance at what? Maybe a few extra wins this season? Not to mention, Darvish has been horrible his last 8 starts or so and has even admitted he was tipping pitches his last game. I just don't get the move.
From ESPN's Trade Deadline Winners and Losers article

Winner: Los Angeles Dodgers

It would have been easy for a team on pace for 114 wins to sit and do nothing -- especially if the front office truly believes Clayton Kershaw will be 100 percent or close to it come October. Instead, Andrew Friedman & Co. did what they had to do: acquire Yu Darvish. Forget that 10-run outing in his latest start; Darvish is still an elite starter, and reports that he has been tipping his fastball could explain why he had a couple blow-up outings in July.

The Dodgers needed insurance not only for Kershaw but also for Alex Wood, Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda, all of whom have had injury issues this year or in the recent past. On top of Darvish, they added some lefty bullpen help in Tony Watson and Tony Cingrani. The best team in baseball just got deeper and better.

Loser: Texas Rangers

Think back to a year ago, when the Rangers gave up highly regarded outfield prospect Lewis Brinson to get Jonathan Lucroy. The season ended with a disappointing sweep in the division series to the Toronto Blue Jays, and now they sit four games under .500, gasping for breath in the wild-card race. Lucroy has been a big reason for that, hitting .242/.297/.338. He was traded to the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named (basically, the Rockies took on Lucroy’s contact). The Rangers gave up a lot to get Lucroy, didn’t win in 2016 or 2017 and didn't get anything for him. Ouch.

Then there’s the Darvish trade. Willie Calhoun is an intriguing prospect, hitting .298 with 23 home runs at Triple-A Oklahoma City, but the Rangers didn’t get Alex Verdugo, Walker Buehler or Yadier Alvarez in the trade, all rated higher on the Dodgers' prospect list. Calhoun is a second baseman/corner outfielder, but most scouts believe the glove won’t stick at second, so his bat will have to carry him. It isn't an awful return, but it would have been nice for the Rangers to acquire a top-50 guy even for a rental such as Darvish.

_______________

Sounds like the Dodgers made the right moves to me.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 18 July 31-Aug 6 "Trade Deadline Edition"

Well they are considered winners because they are factoring in the Watson and Cingriani trade, too. I still think getting Darvish was pointless, unless their intent is to sign him to long term deal after season ends. If they can land him then I would say it was worth the trade. If he is purely a rental it is an overpay, IMHO.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 18 July 31-Aug 6 "Trade Deadline Edition"

This is the A+ grade that I was talking about earlier. Insider article:

http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/stor...ish-worth-plus

Quote:
Los Angeles Dodgers acquire: RHP Yu Darvish
Texas Rangers acquire: 2B/OF Willie Calhoun, RHP A.J. Alexy, SS Brendon Davis

Los Angeles Dodgers: A-plus

Even though the Dodgers are on pace for 114 wins, it seemed clear the safe move would be to acquire rotation insurance not only for Kershaw, but for Alex Wood, Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda and Brandon McCarthy, all of whom have had various health issues the past two seasons. The best part is they acquire Darvish without giving up Walker Buehler, Alex Verdugo or Yadier Alvarez, all of whom ranked in the top 30 prospects on Keith Law's midseason top 50 update.

Darvish's last start was a disaster, when he allowed 10 runs against the Marlins, but reports surfaced that he has been tipping his pitches, which could explain a couple bad outings in July. There's no reason to think that's a long-term issue, however, and Darvish should be valued as an elite starting pitcher. He has 148 strikeouts in 137 innings, and while his strikeout rate is down a bit from past seasons, batters are hitting just .225/.293/.396 against him.

Getting away from the launching pad in Arlington and into Dodger Stadium will also help: He has a 5.38 ERA at home and 2.49 on the road. A playoff rotation of Kershaw, Wood, Darvish and Hill is as good as it comes, and Darvish will help balance out three left-handers. The best team in baseball is better and deeper after this trade.
I honestly haven't seen anyone that doesn't think its a great move for the Dodgers, but as I mentioned earlier I think a lot of it has to do with who the Dodgers actually gave up in the trade. At the end of the day, he helps them win this year.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 18 July 31-Aug 6 "Trade Deadline Edition"

Good move for LA for this year ... now in the playoffs (assuming Kershaw is healthy) they can roll out 4 good starters and not have to pitch anyone on short rest, which I think was a reason the Cubs beat them last year.

Plus 2 LH relievers that they were lacking. This was a move for the playoffs, not the rest of the regular season .. they are winning the division either way.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 18 July 31-Aug 6 "Trade Deadline Edition"

I've watched many Darvish starts over the years. He used to have supreme stuff, probably the best secondary stuff of any starting pitcher.

But he's a mentally weak pitcher that struggles when he doesn't have his best stuff. This is his free agent walk year and the pressure has gotten to him - not exactly a tough-as-nails guy you want in the playoffs. This is not the same Darvish of even two years ago. He may even be hiding an injury so it doesn't affect his contract.

That is why Dodger fans should have been rooting to get Verlander. I would have even preferred Sonny Gray to Darvish for 2017.

I would put Jimenez in the bullpen and pitch long relief twice a week. At least you wouldn't need to carry so many useless one inning reliefer's.
Should've traded Britton and/or Brach at the deadline last year. They may have ended up with some good pieces. I have no doubt that Zach's injury and Brach's slight decline this season hurt their value.

Do you realize they were in 1st place at the deadline last year? That would have been stupid, particularly since their bullpen was their major strength. Now during the offseason, I could buy that, and quite a few argued for that through the offseason.

Obviously Zach's injury hurt his value. Nobody doubts that. Except maybe FUquette.

Cubs score 16 including a Lester homer!

But he can't get out of the fifth.

I'm not that familiar with Darvish (though when he started out he seemed to pitch against the Mariners every other outing), but I'd love to have Verlander in a playoff rotation. He wouldn't be afraid of the moment, and I think he'd kill for a chance at a title.

And they ended up losing the WC game in extra innings. Just shows how you can never tell what'll happen from year to year or how long your window will be open. Their moves this year were baffling, though.

Dodgers win again - their streak is now 9 games and outlasting The Mooch's entire WH career.

Bellinger with #29. Within 6 of Piazza's Dodger Rookie Record with 2 months to go.

Only four homers in July? Maybe he isn't the Second Coming after all.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jon Lester joined John Smoltz as the only pitchers since 1900 to hit a HR and record his 2000th strikeout in the same game.

Wade Miley(Orioles) want's to be the first pitcher to hit a HR and record his 2000th bases on balls in the same game. It might take awhile since he can only usually go 5 innings per start.

Cubs score 16 one day, get shut out on three hits the next day. Baseball is a funny game.

Orioles going with a six man starting rotation. Dumb !!! Dumb !!! Dumb!!!. They must not want to hurt any of their starter's feelings by demoting them to the bullpen.

Plus don't see the need for a 7 man bullpen unless Darren O'Day can play the outfield.

And each of those 3 were absolute bombs. He's "quietly" having another great season, overshadowed a bit because of the success of Harper, Bellinger, etc.

Arizona is a good team but it's still disappointing to lose that series. Carl Edwards can be really good but goes through some bad control spells.

Dodgers go deep five times (one each by their five best offensive players this season : Puig, Turner, Taylor, Seager and Bellinger). They are 43-7 in their last 50 -- the best 50 game run in the majors since the NY Giants went 43-7 in 1912.

The Dodgers are a perfectly constructed regular season team with a deep bullpen and seemingly dozens of starting pitchers. Some of this is luck on their part, Bellinger wasn't supposed to be a superstar right out of the gate.

They remind me a bit of the 2001 Mariners, which doesn't bode well for the playoffs.
