The Open Championship, July 20-23

Facts and figures for the The Open golf championship:

Event: 146th Open Championship.

Dates: July 20-23.

Site: Royal Birkdale, Southport, England.

Length: 7,156 yards.

Par: 70.

Field: 156 players

Playoff (if necessary): 4 holes, aggregate score.

Prize money: $10,250,000.

Winner's share: $1,845,000.

Defending champion: Henrik Stenson.

Last year: In a duel that rates among the best in history, Henrik Stenson closed with a 63 to beat Phil Mickelson by three shots at Royal Troon. Stenson joined Johnny Miller as the only players to shoot 63 in the final round to win a major. He finished at 264 (20 under) to set the major championship scoring record. Stenson and Mickelson combined for 14 birdies and an eagle in the final round. Their best-ball score would have been 59. They were so far ahead of everyone else that the next closest player to Mickelson was 11 shots back.

Last time at Royal Birkdale: Padraig Harrington outlasted 53-year-old Greg Norman, who was taking a break from his honeymoon with Chris Evert. Harrington wound up with a four-shot victory over Ian Poulter to become the first European in more than a century to win the Open in successive years.

Open champions at Royal Birkdale: Peter Thomson (1954, 1965), Arnold Palmer (1961), Lee Trevino (1971), Johnny Miller (1976), Tom Watson (1983), Ian Baker-Finch (1991), Mark O'Meara (1998), Padraig Harrington (2008).

Re: The Open Championship, July 20-23

Will be hard to top last year's Open. Hard to believe that Phil shot 65 in the final round and lost by 3, finishing 11 ahead of 3rd place.

The weather looks like it could take its toll on the players this year.

Saw an segment on Golf Channel, and it looks a good combo of Rain/Wind everyday so it should be a good Open this year.

Didn't see it today but it sounds like Spieth played during the worst of the weather, so a 69 seems pretty good. Tees off at 10:55a ET Saturday.

I don't think I'd be happier for any golfer ever winning a major than if Kuch could win one.

Re: The Open Championship, July 20-23

Spieth had a chance to break it open after 16, but Kuch answered on 17. Nice job. Looking like the same deal tomorrow.

And then Spieth does that

Should have swung the other way on 18.

Spieth in the driver's seat.

Spieth is just a clutch putter. I know he blew up at the Masters last year but I don't see him losing the lead tomorrow. Would still be happy to see Kuchar win.

Well, he's just about given the lead up after 2 holes

Even worse start today for DJ.

Spieth can't hit a fairway to save his life right now.

Re: The Open Championship, July 20-23

I only started tuning in about ten minutes ago after catching his first hole this morning. It certainly seemed even back then that his head might not quite be in the right place today. He is hanging on by his fingernails emotionally right now is my guess. If he pulls this off in the end, it will be that much more dramatic.

Plus, it is hard not to root for the Kooch finally winning a major.

That has taken over 20 minutes now.

Kuchar could have went for a meal and a couple pints.

Re: The Open Championship, July 20-23

There was a very solid chance for a three-stroke swing on that hole and it only ended up being one. Could be huge later.
