If the Dodgers trade for Verlander, they will win the World Series. The Indians are still lurking if they get it together. That bullpen is constructed for the playoffs.

Doesn't Verlander make like $30 million? Nice to have an unlimited payroll.

it is pretty nice. and what's scarier for other teams is that the dodgers will be getting a lot of dead money off the books soon (damn you carl crawford)

The Dodgers have plowed a lot of their money into the farm system and international signings. They also have one of the best player development programs in baseball. Bellinger was just another random prospect a year ago. He wasn't supposed to be a super prospect.

A few years ago the Tigers had Verlander,David Price and Max Scherzer in the starting rotation and didn't even win a playoff game. Got swept by Baltimore.

And putting your money into scouting and development is the way to do it. But then they still have enough to run the highest payroll and bring back guys like Turner and Jansen when they need to. Basically this is the Dodgers team that we've feared would happen since they started spending big money a few years ago.

I don't give them any sympathy for Crawford since they knew that contract was shit when they took it on. The question will be whether they re-spend that dead money or try to reduce their luxury tax a bit.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 16 July 17-23

It's weird, because even with the highest payroll it's not like the Dodgers have just out bid everyone for the big free agents the last few seasons. They've avoided signing the big names and settled for middle of the road pitchers, even declining to keep paying someone like Greinke. It's their home grown guys or trade bargains that have contributed the most to their success this year.

I think they save though, especially this year and the next when a lot of the other big contracts end in 2018 like Adrian Gonzalez. The big money thrown out early was good to make sure the team was competitive under new ownership. Although having deep pockets will certainly keep guys like Kershaw, Jansen, and eventually Seager or Bellinger for as long as they want.

Well, that's because they had so much money committed to other players, they often couldn't extend their payroll.

Trade reportedly close between White Sox and Yankees. CWS would Todd Frazier, David Robinson, and Tommy Kahnle to NYY for prospects.

Blake Rutherford is the big piece going to Chicago.

Yankees bullpen is going to be something with adding Robertson and Kahnle, who has been lights out this season.

This is a good trade for both teams. Yankees bullpen is now stacked not just now but through next year at least. Todd Frazier isn't having the best of years but he'll give the Yankees some much needed stability at first base and I can see him picking it up a little bit going to a hitter friendly ballpark. The Sox are in full rebuilding mode and it didn't seem like Robertson and Frazier were part of the long term plans anyway. Losing Kahnle in the trade is the biggest hit for the White Sox but you don't get a good prospect unless he's included.

Meanwhile, Rutherford is a solid prospect. First round pick, 19 years old and has played well in A ball this year. It's too early in his career to call him a "can't miss" prospect but everyone seems to agree that he's heading there and could be fast tracked through the minors. Clarkin is a tougher call. He's good but injuries have hampered him. He's a coin flip but he's a solid get as the second prospect in the deal. I don't know much about the third prospect included in the deal and Tyler Clippard is Tyler Clippard.

From the Yankees end, Rutherford sucks to lose but you gotta give to get. He's a few years away from the majors and part of a crowded outfield group. I thought him and Jorge Mateo were the guys that were most expendable in the Yankees system for those reasons and here we are. Clarkin was in a weird spot because if he wasn't getting added to the 40 man this offseason the Yankees would have risked losing him so he was a good prospect to move now.

Also good for the Yankees that it keeps Frazier from going to Boston, he was easily the best rental 3rd baseman out there

Bryant went out with a hand injury, looked ugly, but x-rays were negative and he is day to day ... caught a break, I was thinking DL for some time when it happened

Seems like another good deal for both teams. Rutherford doesn't look like nearly the same level prospect right now as the other guys the White Sox have gotten, but they weren't giving up high-tier starting pitching either.

Glad I wasn't watching.

Six wins in a row! What's encouraging is that the whole lineup has been hitting, not just Bryzzo.

Cory Seager, mid-way through his Sophomore season in the bigs, just hit his 44th career HR as a shortstop (he hit one more as a pinch hitter). Not a big deal, except that somehow that is now the new career record for HRs by a shortstop for the Los Angeles franchise (which is since they moved to CA in 1958). Wow, the L.A. Dodgers sure haven't had much production from the 6 position -- until now.

Also they won their 11th straight and improve to 31-4 in their last 35 and 40-10 over their last 50. Impressive.

I heard that on the radio today and thought it was crazy too. Although small correction, that's just for LA. Pee Wee Reese has 126 homeruns for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Mariners pick up reliever David Phelps from the Marlins for four prospects I've never heard of.

They had Russell at SS for a long time, he was certainly a productive SS, but teams were looking at that position for defense much more than power pre-Cal Ripken. Mario Mendoza would not have the opportunity to establish the Mendoza line in current times

The Brewers are coming back down to reality. It wouldn't surprise me if they finish closer to the bottom of the Central than the top by season's end.

Don't look now but the Pirates are playing very good. That puts their GM in a very tough spot at the trading deadline. They were hoping to turn over their roster for some prospects.
