The 2017 U.S. Open Championship, June 15-18

No thread on this yet.

Erin Hills
Erin, WI (near Milwaukee)
Par 72
7,741 yards

I haven't been paying much attention the first two days but the three biggies didn't have a good week with both Dustin Johnson and Rory failing to make the cut. Spieth made the cut but shot +4 today so he is way out of it.

What do you guys think of the low scoring? US Open has always been about Par but you have guys shooting 65, 66, 67 in these rounds easily.

And the single round scoring record, which has stood since 1973, was just broken by Justin Thomas. Erin Hills has fairways of generous width, countered by being one of the longest courses ever to host a major and with absolutely brutal rough if you get too far out of the fairway.

FWIW, I'm rooting for Tommy Fleetwood. He has the best hair:

I think this leaderboard kind of exposes the great players in today's golf. They're all bombers who can miss fairways in normal events and get away with it. Right now Fowler is the only big name on the leaderboard as DJ, Spieth, Rory, Bubba, Day are all out of it. These guys are shooting 63, 65, 67 cause they're simply hitting fairways and have a short club into the green.

Yup, and our leader (Brian Harman) on this very long course is 120th in the PGA in driving distance. Even Jim Furyk, who is dead last in this metric, is sitting in reasonably decent shape for a solid finish at -3. OTOH, Koepka and Justin Thomas are both pretty big hitters.

Agreed, but I hope the conditions toughen up and scores become more fitting of a US Open. Not likely with all of the recent rain softening things.

Can't think the USGA is happy about that.

True, but on the other hand we had a ridiculous amount of clustering at the top for that far into the third round. At multiple points, there were 6 or 7 players tied for the lead with several more one stroke back. I kind of felt bad for Fox trying to jump back and forth to show everything that they could for an hour or so there.

Six straight majors won by first time(major) winners.

Sorry, but that felt more like a PGA Championship then a US Open. PGA Championship always gets a no name winner (and a no name leaderboard) between -10 and -15. US Open is mostly played to par but you still have the big name guys compete on the leaderboard and win too as Fowler was the only big name up there on Sunday. I also didn't like that the last 3 holes were playing the easiest on the course as that is where all the drama of a US Open is when a player trips up and double bogey's one of them.

I felt the same way.

Was probably the least I've watched of a US Open in a long time.
