2017 MLB Week 6 May 8-14

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...ion-team-rules

Quote:
The New York Mets have suspended right-hander Matt Harvey three days without pay for a violation of team rules.

Spoiler:
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson would not disclose Harvey's infraction, but a source told ESPN on Sunday that the pitcher was suspended for not showing up to the ballpark on Saturday. Harvey's absence Saturday was first reported by Fox Sports, which also reported that a source close to Harvey said that the pitcher had a migraine and that there were possible communication issues with the team.

The New York Daily News reported that the ban stems from a compilation of issues dating back to last season.

The suspension apparently does not have anything to do with another recent Mets controversy. The team posted and then deleted a photo on social media Saturday that showed a sex toy in backup catcher Kevin Plawecki's locker, but an MLB source told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick on Sunday that the discipline for Harvey is not related to that.

Alderson said only that Harvey was sent home and that his suspension started Saturday. Left-hander Adam Wilk was called up from Triple-A to replace Harvey as the Mets' starter Sunday against the Marlins and was hit hard, giving up six runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. New York managed only one hit in a 7-0 loss and was shut out for the first time this season.

"I don't know if I'd use the word frustrating," Jay Bruce said, according to the Daily News. "Obviously there are team policies, and when those aren't followed, action has to be taken. I don't know any of the details, I just know that Matt's not here today. He's going to miss a few days."

Manager Terry Collins addressed the team before Sunday's game.

"In order to be able to control things you've got to sometimes make tough decisions, and this is one of them," Collins said, according to the Daily News.

It was already shaping up to be a rough weekend for the Mets before Sunday's news. It was announced on Saturday that ace Noah Syndergaard will be sidelined through at least the All-Star break because of a torn muscle behind his right arm. He was officially put on the 60-day disabled list on Sunday to make room for Wilk.

The Mets also claimed lefty Tommy Milone off waivers from Milwaukee -- he was 1-0 with one save and a 6.43 ERA.

Collins indicated that he was aware that a suspension could be on the horizon for Harvey.

"There were some moves made last night because we felt this might occur,'' he said.

In addition, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left Saturday's game with a thumb injury suffered while diving for a ball. Alderson said that Sunday's MRI did not show ligament damage, and he hopes Cabrera is out a short time.

Also, left fielder Yoenis Cespedes, out since April 27 with a strained left hamstring, will return to New York on Monday for what Alderson said will be "an evaluation that is a little broader than just the hamstring, to try and get to the question of why he may have recurring hamstring injuries.''

Right-hander Seth Lugo and left-hander Steven Matz are both recovering from elbow injuries, while first baseman Lucas Duda has been on the disabled list since April 20 with a hyperextended left elbow.

Harvey is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA in six starts this season as he comes back from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome that ended his season early last year. He made only 17 starts last season, going 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA.

Harvey pitched well in 2013, when he went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA, and in 2015, when he went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 6 May 8-14

I think Harvey will bounce back. I'm not going to take a hard bet on him still being the dominant Dark Knight but I think it could happen. Aside from his last two terrible starts, he's pitched pretty well this season. He might be a doucehebag and possibly an 80s throwback heavy drinker but he's a good pitcher. He'll be fine and I don't think the Mets will trade him, especially with Thor injured.

Crazy Yankees/Cubs game last night. I was dozing off by the 8th/9th inning and I wake up on the couch at 1am to see the fucking game still going on. Yankees are acting like contenders but it's a long season and lot of these guys are pretty young. We'll see how they hold up to a full grind. Alas, the most encouraging part of this rebuild hasn't been Aaron Judge but Luis Severino. He was abysmal as a starter last season but fixed a lot of his issues in the offseason and has been a revelation this year. Good for him because if he came into this season the same as last he would have been written off into the bullpen.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 6 May 8-14

Harvey's outlet surgery doesn't have many good comps. It's a relatively new sports procedure with an uneven track record. I think the days of him having the best stuff in baseball are likely over. But he's looked good in short spurts, more mechanical issues than anything else. I expect him to be a solid #2 or #3 starter for somebody going forward.

There have been lots of rumors about Harvey's lifestyle and what he does with his nights in New York. He enjoys partying a little too much, even by the standards of famous athletes. The Mets didn't care when he was the best pitcher in the game but now things are different.

Giants lose to the Mets with a walk-off single in the ninth in the bottom of the ninth to drop to 11-22. Is it too early to stick a fork in them? I don't think so.

Damn it's so bad. Well, maybe we can get a W off of Wheeler and prove trading him wasn't such a horrible mistake years ago. Management really needs to open their eyes (and pocketbooks) and do something ASAP.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 6 May 8-14

The Cardinals have quietly turned things around--5 wins in a row, 8 straight road wins and a 15-5 mark since their horrible start. Even more amazing is that they've done so over the last week with multiple guys out (Fowler, Piscotty).

The schedule gets a little tougher beginning this weekend with the evil Cubs coming to town.

Orioles will be without Zach Britton for 45-60 days.

If they remain at the top or near it then it proves that relief pitching is basically overrated. Starting pitching, defense and three run homers usually gets the job done. Too much credit is given to pitchers who hammer in the last nail ,when it was the rest of the team that got them to the ninth with the lead.

They probably are somewhat overrated, but there's nothing quite as soul-crushing as a late defeat, and many guys have spectacularly failed in that role.

The Nats are trying to make the playoffs without a closer or even a decent bullpen. I guess they plan to trade for a closer in July. It's the one weakness of what looks like the best team in baseball.

The Mariners, after a 2-8 start and now with 4/5ths of their starting rotation on the DL as well as ROY candidate Mitch Haniger on the DL, have reached the .500 mark at 17-17.

Thank you, Nats, for last night's collapse.

Meanwhile it's going to be tough going another 2 months w/o Britton.

O's give one back tonight. Brach sucked and I have no idea why Buck left him in there for so many pitches. He can't handle the closer role.

Oof, Dodgers injuries seem just as bad as last season and it's already so early in the season. Toles out for the year with a torn ACL. Granted the injuries have made way for Bellinger and Urias earlier then the team hoped and they've been playing great.

Speaking of which, 6th homer for Bellinger

Bellinger has a very unusual, unique swing somewhat resembling a golfer's swing. It will be interesting to see how the league adjusts the second time around. People should remember that Puig looked like the second coming of Joe DiMaggio his first year.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 6 May 8-14

I don't think Rob Manfred can be too happy about the length of games. Yesterday especially. TB/BOS lasted over 4 and a half hours and it was only 9 innings and HOUS/NYY second game was 11 minutes short of 4 hours(another 9 inning game).

These games immediately slow down once the parade of relief pitchers begins.

They definitely need a pitch clock . However, like I mentioned it seems like the games really slow down in the late innings. Why not for starters use the pitch clock starting the seventh inning.

The see saw season for the Blue Jays continues as they won their fifth in a row and a series sweep to boot. After being fortunate in the injury front the past couple of seasons, this year is not the case. Right now, a .500 season will be nice. We'll see, it's a long season.

Jake is making a terrible case for a huge FA contract. The lost velocity is a big concern.

The Mariners are a really wounded team right now, but that didn't stop them from winning a number of games before playing Toronto. But their rotation is such a mess that they need to outslug people to have a chance.
