I read that yesterday. Really good stuff. And I guess I am a stat geek, if you ask my friends/family.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 3 Apr. 17-23

For the poll question--I don't think you can ever count the Giants out as long as Bumgarner is healthy and continuing to pitch at an elite level. And he's just 27. And they still have many other things going for them, such a top 10 payroll and a great manager. And just like last year, if they sneak in and have Bumgarner/Cueto heading up the rotation, few teams can match up.

Their downfall the last season plus has been a bullpen that has let them down, and at one time that was a strength. If they had someone they could count on last year, I fully believe they knock off the Cubs and advance. Quite simply, bullpens are unpredictable from year to year.

From ESPN's article:

Under a provision added in 2013, a suspended player is not allowed to participate in that year's postseason even if his suspension ends before then -- unless a suspension is reduced on appeal.
I remember the controversy years ago about this, involving Jhonny Peralta at the time. I didn't realize a change had been made. So if the Pirates qualify for the postseason, they lose Marte again.

The Pirates come into St. Louis on an emotional high after sweeping the Cubs. The Cards return home after a miserable road trip.

And St. Louis sweeps Pittsburgh winning every game by the same 2-1 score.

Hopefully that will temporarily put to rest the articles about what's wrong with the Cardinals. Those writers can now focus on what's wrong with the Cubs.

Three 2-1 games in a row.

That the bullpen didn't blow.

Unbelievable.

I think some of those articles about what's wrong with the Cardinals are still necessary. Even though they won these three games, the offense was anemic, the bullpen flirted with disaster multiple times, and there were still ugly defensive miscues. This series could have easily been a sweep the other direction with just a handful of plays tipping the other way. I'm encouraged by the wins and by the starting pitching in these three games, but the Cards still have a lot of problems to shore up in order to be consistently competitive.

Oh, I agree 100%. Their play continues to be uneven in many areas.

The Cubs are scuffling but should be fine in the long run. Might need to shore up the bullpen, though.

2 comeback wins in a row .. beyond the HR to win it Russell has a really nice approach at the plate this year, I see less strikeouts in his future.

I just flipped over to the Mariners-Marlins game, and it's not competitive, but Ichiro led off the ninth in what is likely his last at-bat in Seattle, and he yanked one out to right. Pretty cool.

O's really needed that great Jimenez start after the Gausman dud yesterday. Never knows what he can do. Pitched him deep and then used Hart for the clean up in the 8th. Brach great in the 9th (with no Britton).

That is cool .. I always like watching him hit ... he really has his own style. Incredibly cool he got a hit in Seattle. I would assume he got a good reaction from the crowd

I saw he got an ovation when he first came up in the series, and he got one in the last at bat (not sure what happened in between). It's good to see because he wasn't really on good terms when he left (rumors were that teammates considered him selfish, and he took up a disproportionate amount of payroll on a terrible team), but I think people still respected him, and time can heal some of the petty stuff.

I've had suspicions about Marte using for a couple of seasons. He's one of the four or five best athletes playing in MLB and now we know how he got there.

The steroid he got busted for only makes sense if he was also using other steroids in a stack.

Anyone else notice how empty the new Braves' stadium has been after opening day? Atlanta fans aren't showing up for a new ballpark, which is disappointing.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 3 Apr. 17-23

... and the Giants are totally hosed

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner is headed for the disabled list after injuring himself
while dirtbiking on the team’s off day, the team announced.

The lefthander sustained bruised ribs and a grade one or two left shoulder AC sprain. He is out of the hospital and set to be re-evaluated next week.

Bumgarner, 27 years old and perennially one of the top pitchers in baseball, is 0–3 this season despite a 3.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.

The Giants are 6–10 and in last place in the NL West.

Edit: Looks like he will be out 2 months

What did you say about comeback wins?

Gotta love this team's never-say-die attitude.
