Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Ah, I gotcha. Kyrie can definitely turn it on, it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to having a real coach not named Lebron.

The other thing is, even though they were drafted in the same year, Kyrie is only (barely) 25 and IT is 29. That's only a few years but it makes a big difference considering the youngsters on this team.

Edited to add: sorry, IT is actually 28, he'll be 29 when his contract comes up.

The age was definitely a big part of this trade.

And Kyrie will react well to a good coach, I think. He had one in college, and I think many players in the NBA have a lot of respect for Stevens, probably just a step below Pop and Kerr in that department.

Cavs are considering voiding the trade based on Isaiah's injury. Wow. Just keeps getting crazier. Now that's how you kill the Celtics.

Crazy if the trade doesn't end up going through. And also if Isaiah's hip is that bad.

That would be absolutely diabolical, wouldn't it? You know that your second Superstar player is demanding a trade. You orchestrate a deal with the only team in your Conference that could really challenge you in the Playoffs, you agree to only send away your disgruntled player and in exchange you get them to trade away three of their top guys including one you know to be somewhat injured, you make the trade public, then you do your physical and act shocked when you find out that the returning centerpiece is injured, you void the trade, take your disgruntled Superstar player back -- making him aware that you did all you could to accommodate him, and leave your rival with three pissed off, dejected pieces for their roster. Ask the Lakers how players like getting traded away and then being forced to return to their previous team.

Not saying that's what's happening here, but it would be a pretty shitty yet brilliant move.

Boston might have to sweeten the deal if they don't want to walk it back. Neither option is attractive.

I can't see the Cavs walking away from this deal. If I were Boston the most that I would offer is an additional 2nd round pick.

So you'd basically spit in their face?

I don't see how Boston can walk away knowing they have a lot more to lose. We already knew Kyrie wanted out and wasn't happy, so if this fails nothing changes. Guys like Thomas or Crowder staying in Boston would be rougher.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Well apparently IT will have some time in a suit to cool off. I can see them repairing that relationship, and perhaps even getting a discount if he misses some time on a short contract, so he can prove himself again. Or to mend the relationship just go full out and pay him if he comes back healthy. That's much better than giving Cleveland anything more than a second round pick as sweetener in the deal.

They're lucky they're in the East, though, since even if IT misses a couple of months that shouldn't hurt them too much in the standings.

exactly. Yes, the Cavs can theoretically turn the screws on the C's because they have more to lose with those players having to "return", but realistically, the Cavs aren't going to get a better deal than this and they know it. And IT only had 1 yr on his contract anyway, the idea behind this trade was always "you don't have to commit to him long term if you don't want to". Plus, the C's were transparent about his hip injury.

Give them a 2nd, otherwise, take the players back.

Yeah, is talk about adding Tatum or Brown is insanity, who would do that? The other Isiah Thomas hasn't been hired as Celtics GM, has he?

One report I heard was that Tatum or Brown would replace the Nets pick. It's debatable whether that's better or worse when we don't know where that pick will be.

much happier giving up the pick than either of those guys, and I don't think Danny will be either. It's already a 3 for 1 swap, 4 for 1 is too much for this team to be successful this year.

Right, if Ainge had wanted to give up Tatum/Brown instead of the pick, he probably could've done that in the original deal. The bummer is when a guy loses value quickly like an Okafor.

The Celtics should just stand tough, or offer to give Cavs the option to swap first round picks at the end of the first round, something very small. The Cavs will never get anywhere close to this deal from another team.

Sure, but if the deal gets voided, the Cs are pretty screwed. I've never read if the Cavs really have the ability to void the trade as presently constructed based on It's physical.

Clearly they were moving on from Thomas. They have made no effort to extend him and had no issue trading him.

There is no way Cs are giving up Tatum or Brown in the deal. They will just trade Thomas to someone else if the have to.

he's already decent. is he going to be a star? no idea, but it is possible. he was already a rotation player at 20 years old, on a playoff team. He's a great athlete, and seems to be smart and driven, so yeah, I think he's going to be really good. I didn't want him going anywhere, I'd say he's untouchable unless Unibrow is involved.

Lakers fined $500K for tampering with Paul George. Sounds like Pelinka made inappropriate phone contact with George's agent.

I can live with that.

Remember that George's agent is also D'Angelo Russell's as well.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

I would've liked for the Celtics to hold their ground and let Cleveland walk if they wanted to, but meh, second-round pick that probably wouldn't have made their roster anyway.
