While the play certainly was strange, it's worth noting that the Cubs didn't raise concerns about it when it happened. The umpires didn't question it either. I can't explain it, outside of the probability of rosin/pine tar which could conceivably be in the dirt around the plate, especially considering it happened late in a game. Regardless, it was a freaky thing (that helped the Cubs) and much ado is being made about nothing, IMO.

Never heard of the guy until now. Though I'd question how departing free agents would have any impact on Chicago's financial ability to bring anyone in. I guess one could argue they'd want to avoid any luxury tax penalties, but the resources are there to do whatever they want.

I'm thankful this is Ubaldo's last season with the Orioles. I knew it was a mistake when they signed him and he's done absolutely nothing but prove me right, save for a handful of times where he's been sharp. I don't know whether his problems are strictly mechanical or he just doesn't have the talent.

Gallardo got his first start for the Ms, against the Angels: Five innings, eight hits, three runs, two BB, four K, 90 pitches. Sounds like mediocre fifth-starter material. I didn't watch the game so I don't know how slowly he worked.

I lost count on how many times he rubbed up the baseball.

They should just trade him and pick up part of his salary. I can't see OF Seth Smith staying with Baltimore because they have a Rule5 guy on the DL plus Pedro Alvarez hit 2 homers for Norfolk on opening night.

I did not expect the start the Dbacks are off to now.

The Cardinals had the best record in the NL in spring training. Then the season started and they forgot how to play baseball.

I've heard about him for about a year or so. Hard to imagine a foreign player living up to that kind of hype, but if he's a special player, I'd rather have him be on the Cubs.

I believe the front office's goal is to avoid luxury taxes, but also to just run a financially sound club. That's why they went for Lackey rather than just writing a blank check to Price or Greinke. I would've loved to see them land one of those guys like they went all-out for Lester, but they chose not to for whatever reason. (Of course they did go all-out for Heyward, and we'll see how that ends up.)

I'm sure they could've re-signed Fowler, but why take on those years and dollars when you have cheap guys ready to play? Jake will be an interesting case because if you still have a need for starters, letting him walk would be a pure dollars move. I'd like to see him back myself, but that doesn't seem to fit the master plan, whereas Ohtani would.

Shutout twice at home by the damn Reds. Unacceptable.

Maybe they will miss the playoffs again and the DeWitts will finally clean house.

Things back to normal for Jose Quintana, gives up 2 runs but the offense only scores 1. Saw a stat that in 36% of his starts, the team has scored 0 or 1 runs.

Last year, there was pretty much never a chance in these threads to say anything positive about my team, so I'll take this possibly last moment to say, yay Twins!

This may not be the year the Mariners break their playoff drought after all.
