If he declines as some would predict, it could leave him short of where he'd need to be. He's taken great care of himself. Does he defy the odds and continue to play at a high level into his late 30's? Carlton Fisk did, amassing over half of his career value (based on WAR) after he was 33.

His case is somewhat unique, because it is the perception of some that he is indeed the greatest defensive catcher of all time (cue the howls from fans of other notable catchers--Bench, Rodriguez, etc.). I agree the media likes to talk him up. But I think you hear the same from his peers on the field. And fans (aside from ones in Cincinnati) seem to recognize it as well. Awards have to sometimes be taken with a grain of salt. But in the brief history of the platinum glove award, given to the best defender at any position, Molina has won it for the NL 4 of 6 times. My understanding is that 2 of those came from fan voting, the latter 2 had the extra backing of a sabermetric approach to evaluating players (link here).

If he avoids significant injuries and catches 125 games each of the next 4 seasons (and that might be a conservative total considering he caught 140+ last year), he'd be in top 4 all time in games played at catcher. He'd be well past 2,000 hits at that point as well. And while he's never been the offensive force that the more recent HOF catchers have been, he's far from being a liability with the bat.

So I go along with the thought that he will be voted in at some point. No doubt, his candidacy will certainly spark all kinds of discussion in the future.
Well, sure, if he catches 125+ games for 4 more years, with the same stellar defense and decent hitting, then he has a shot. But that is a long way from saying he's a hall of famer.

I think (minus injury and depending on performance), we see Zorbrist, Baez, Heyward, Schwarber all in the high 400 AB range.
He did. I agree that Maddon really likes having all the flexibility, and if you're hoping to play into October, it makes sense to rotate guys and keep them fresh. Plus it's best not to push Schwarber's knee more than you have to. This team really takes pride in its defense so it's hard to see them not using their best as much as possible, but it's a long season, so you live with a few minor shortcomings that may cost you here and there.

Pedro Guerrero, the former Dodgers and Cardinals slugger who shared MVP honors in the 1981 World Series, reportedly is fighting for his life in a New York hospital.

The 60-year-old was hospitalized after suffering his second stroke in a little over two years, ESPN Deportes reported. The Dominican newspaper Hoy said Guerrero is on a ventilator at a hospital in the Bronx.
I remember him tearing up the Cubs when he was in one of his hot stretches. Wishing him the best.

What a turnaround. Hope it continues.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 1 Apr. 2-9 "Opening Day Edition"

The first-place Reds just ended Philadelphia's bid for an undefeated season. Cincinnati is the only team in the NL Central with a positive run differential (+1), they have the longest winning streak of ANY team in the division this year (W1), and they control their own destiny as their Magic Number is now only 161.

Wow, Mariners take the lead in the 13th then give up a two-out, 3-2 pitch three-run walkoff to Springer and get swept.

Pedro was a great hitter at his peak for the Dodgers. I think today he'd probably be a DH since his fielding was terrible.

It's good to hear some positive news about his health.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 1 Apr. 2-9 "Opening Day Edition"

Frustrating series for St. Louis.

Starting pitching was fantastic. 3 tight games that could have gone either way and it seemed as if Chicago caught the breaks and/or did a slightly better job capitalizing on them.

If the Cards can avoid significant injuries, I don't see the Cubs running away with things like they did last year.

That play with Molina was one of the stranger ones you will ever see ... how did the ball get stuck there?

Re: 2017 MLB Week 1 Apr. 2-9 "Opening Day Edition"

Cards have been spending their small-market allocation money on pine tar.

But yeah, all three games could've gone either way, but it's nice to go to a chief rival opening their season at home and take the series. Cards have a lot of talent but might not've solved all their defensive issues quite yet.

The Orioles are so confident in their starting rotation that they just signed Edwin Jackson to a minor league contract.

Long and interesting article about Shohei Ohtani ... who I hope will be a Cub next year ... and with Jake, Lackey, and Montero likely all gone .. and their contracts ... seems doable.

Just watched a nice torch job by the Boston bullpen.

And shocker, Rich Hill goes on the DL with a blister.
