2017 NCAA College Basketball Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Missouri becomes the first team to fire their coach after the regular season, asking Kim Anderson not to come back. Looks like Frank Haith had the right idea to bolt to Tulsa before things got worse three years ago.

Also there is a coaching vacancy at NC State as Mike Gottfried was fired last month but asked to finish out the year.

Yeah was going to say - guess they didn't have awards when Wilt played.

Nana Foulland won Def POTY and POTY and Nathan Davis won COTY for Bucknell in the Patriot. Nana was a surprise to me. Thought he'd be All 1st team, but not POTY. Figured Kempton on that. Means little though if they can't beat Kempton and Lehigh Wednesday.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Manning leave Wake if he got a better offer. I would love to see him stay another year and see if he can't make a S16 run though. He's a great coach definitely headed for greener pastures soon.

Sounds like the Huskies are keeping Lorenzo Romar. Not surprising considering the great class they're bringing in, but I sure hope they turn things around. Getting into the tournament would be a big step, but, say, a quick loss as a 13th seed would still seem like a disappointment considering the talent.

Illinois has fired John Groce

I thought he would recruit well enough to cover up his the fact that he is a terrible tactician, but he couldn't.

Somehow I missed this : my Alma Mater, UC Santa Barbara fired their all-time winningest head coach Bob Williams during the Big West tourney last week after a disastrous 6-22 season. He lead them to the Tourney three times in his 19 seasons with the Gauchos.

Assuming your second "Tourney" reference is to the NCAAs, I would think that at a school like UCSB, any appearance in the Big Dance would be a citywide holiday, but if he's relatively old, I can see wanting to start a new era.

Yeah, I mean 19 seasons is a long time. And yes, any Big Dance appearance is a BID DEAL for the Gauchos. They had their first two when I was there, both times getting hefty resume points for beating highly-ranked UNLV squads at the Thunderdome. That was under their previous coach Jerry Pimm (and his two assistants Ben Howland and Jamie Dixon). I remember watching those Tournament games so intently on campus.

I haven't followed them that closely in recent years, but I guess it was a case of not renewing Williams' contract rather than him actually getting fired.

Mizzou has reportedly offered their job to Cuonzo Martin for $3.6 million a year. That's a shitload of money for a guy with two NCAA appearances in 9 years.

*Cal AD just announced Cuonzo is leaving for another job.

Only two hours from his home-town. Good on him.

But will he see the end of that contract?

Surprised by Romar considering the class they have coming in. But the NCAA drought with all their talent was pretty frustrating.

Yeah, considering they have a huge recruiting class led by Michael Porter Jr., whose dad is/was an assistant coach there. They also needed to pay him a $3.5M buyout.

Pretty sure that is now the recruiting class the U&W used to have coming in. They basically decided they were better off without Romar than possibly having one breakout season with those one and dones coming in as part of that class. Pretty stupid IMO.
