Look at the upside. He should be ready for a full 2018 if he goes under the knife now.

Sucks

Reyes always had sloppy mechanics, this isn't a huge surprise. They've lowered the threshold of what damage is needed to go under Tommy John surgery. Teams now give them surgery at the first sign of problems. Twenty years ago he may have pitched 2-3 more years before getting it.

Surprised Betances lost his arb hearing. $5 million a year would have been a steal, $3 million a year for him is the best deal in baseball.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

I was a little surprised the Yankees won that hearing as well. Here's a bit from an ESPN writer:

Dellin Betances said he plans on fighting for his teammates and the team's fans, but after the way the Yankees spoke about him in arbitration and Randy Levine's comments today, he may have to reconsider always being available. Betances has thrown the most pitches in baseball by a reliever over the past three years.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

Here's Levine's comments. Not sure why he felt the need to bash his player in a public outlet.

The Yankees’ executive did not hold back when discussing the arbitration case on Saturday morning. Levine said that Betances’ agent made a ”half baked attempt” to “use a player to change a well-established market.” In addition, he stated that a $3 million salary should be a “great victory for Dellin Betances” and his request for more money ”had no bearings in reality.”

“$5 million goes to elite closers,” Levine said. “Pitchers who pitch the ninth inning and have a lot of saves. Dellin didn’t have that record. He never did.”

“It’s like me saying, I’m not the president of the Yankees, I’m an astronaut,” Levine added. “I’m not an astronaut and Dellin Betances is not a closer.”
