It's apparent the MLBPA are being incredibly shortsighted if they are blocking every initiative in negotiations. Eliminating hitters stepping out of the box would shave 20 minutes from every game. These other changes are side issues that don't help much.

David Wright(Mets) is hurt again. This time it's a shoulder. I can't keep track of all of his injuries.

I think the Mets are secretly hoping he's done. They took insurance out on his contract and have back-up plans in place at third.

I thought he was going to have an outside shot at the Hall of Fame but these injuries have ended that possibility.

I honestly thought Wright had retired a few years ago.

J J Hardy of the Orioles is another guy who is injured all the time. Maybe time for the Orioles to move Machado over to shortstop and find another thirdbaseman.

But don't you already have former Cub Ryan Flaherty on the roster?

As bad as Pedro Alvarez was in the field,he could have been an option at third base but he became a free agent and don't know if anyone has signed him.

If they play Mark Trumbo in RF that means they could careless about defense.

I didn't know either, but google results are all "Should [x team] sign Pedro Alvarez?"

The Cardinals' inability to sign Heyward/Price last offseason may turn out to be a double blessing.

Looks like Price's elbow issue isn't serious. No surgery just shut down a while.

Good news for them, but they still have to be concerned about his age and workload.

I can't stand the Red Sox, but I like Price and hate to see a guy struggle with something like that. But then I remember it's the Red Sox.

He seems like a decent guy with a great attitude--I hope he can get past it, too. I'm hoping Sale can take some of the pressure off him.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA just announced that the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals will play a special regular season game during the 2017 Little League World Series on Sunday, August 2. It will be called “The Little League Classic” and will be played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Pirates will be the home team.

The game, which takes place during the Little League World Series, will air nationally on ESPN at 7pm that night. ESPN, of course, broadcasts the Little League World Series. This is what they call “synergy.”

The game will, sadly, not be played with pitching rubber 46 feet from home plate or a 225-foot outfield fence. Rather, it will be played at BB&T Ballpark — which you may know better as Bowman Field — which is home of the Class-A Williamsport Crosscutters of the NY-Penn League. They will be renovating the park for the big leaguers. On the day of the game, the Major Leaguers will attend Little League World Series games and then, later that night, the Little Leaguers and their families will go to the Pirates-Cards game.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

Orioles(according to MASN.com) have signed Pedro Alvarez to a minor league deal. Good to have as a DH and worse case scenario as a third baseman or first baseman.

Looks like Trumbo will be going back to RF. Orioles are better fitted that way.

Not good news for Trey Mancini(who is hitting the fuck out of the baseball).

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

This is something that should be cool to break up the long monotony of a baseball season.

I want to see a game played on a field with the same huge dimensions some fields had 100 years ago. Monument Park used to be in play at Yankee Stadium before the renovations.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

Yeah .. with 162 games in a regular season/team, you would think they could do a few things like this every year. ... the NHL has done nicely with the outdoor games .. a decent way to add something interesting to a long regular . Hell, I would be cool with every team playing one home game in their AAA or AA park .. I get there is a lost/lesser gate for one game, but it would be cool for the fans in those places and the players on those teams

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

America suffers yet another crushing loss in the World Baseball Classic. If they lose again tonight they may get eliminated early once again.

I have no idea what MLB is doing with this tournament. Star players skip it and the pitchers are barely prepared to play quality baseball this time of year.

In theory, the WBC is a cool idea .. there is just not a good time to play it and it really suffers from that. it seems to be bigger to non-US countries than the US .. so maybe that is the idea

I really enjoy watching it, even without the star power on the USA team. It's much more interesting to me than spring training games, and I hope it continues. You are right that there is no good time to play it, as far as MLB players go. You aren't going to put a big enough break in the middle of the season for it, and after the season players will want the time off.

I agree, better than spring training games. I look at the NHL version of this stuff and it is competitive and feels like real games (either in their World Cup or the Olympics) ... and think that if baseball were all in with this it could be spectacular. But not having pitchers pitch like it was playoff (or even regular season) ... it will never get to that point. Still not horrible by any stretch ... but not what it could be

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

I agree that it's much bigger to the other countries that don't have MLB. The timing is probably a compromise because the season is too long to fit it in at any other time.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

The whole thing is a double edged sword. Yes, I'd like to see these guys go all out and try to compete but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to see a star pitcher on my favorite team blow out his arm after throwing 120 pitches. It's a tough balance.

I also think the best time to play it is in December so that it's not mixed in with Spring Training. It won't fix the competition problem but letting it stand alone will at least get more eyes on it.
