Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

A lot of the pure serve-and-volley champions stopped winning majors fairly young by today's standards. Once they lost that first step burst needed to reach the net consistently, their Slam chances rapidly dwindled.

Agreed. A slice, unless it goes deep, is never a successful tactic, if it is indeed a tactic and not a reaction to being caught out of position. The problem with Federer's hard backhand has traditionally been its unreliability. How many of them have we seen hit the net over the years! In this 5th set he was in good control of them.
I'll go to my grave despising the two-handed backhand (who was the first to use it?) and players who grunt (damn you, Seles!). Grunting should be disallowed.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Slicing works fairly well on quicker grass. It's much less effective on other surfaces. Djokovic has used the slice effectively at times to switch from defense to offense.

Yes, true, I forgot about grass.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Fed has also used the short BH slice very effectively against some players throughout his career. Especially big servers/hitters who do not have great movement and/or players who are not comfortable moving forward/at the net. Nadal/Djokovic/Murray obviously do not fall in those categories.

Certain players don't seem to handle receiving slice shots very well. Raonic was in this camp a couple of years ago.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Ljubicic's role in Federer's wins against the top seems to be getting overlooked. From what I read, when things looked like they were going south, Roger wouldn't succumb to defeat like he seemed to have done for the last few years, as in he'd tactically change his game, like how high he was hitting his backhand as far as bounce (at least I think that's what I read) in order to surprise Wawrinka and Nadal alike. His newer coach also pretty much said his game was there, he just had to work out the mental, which looked like Federer was able to do for 7 straight matches. His 18th will probably go down as his 2nd or 3rd greatest achievement as far as titles, if not the greatest when you consider how he did it after being out of the sport for 6 months and having to struggle with the worst injury of his career.

Who honestly thought he had a shot at winning A02017? I had hoped he'd have a great run when he started, but never in my wildest dreams could I have predicted he'd do it as a 17 seed, at 35 years old, against 4 top ten players (which I believe has never been done before) and playing 3 out of the 7 matches in 5 sets, beating a guy who's had your number for a decade, and still coming out on top? It's got to be up there as one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports.

And you can tell on his face how much joy and relief Roger was experiencing - no bravado like Djokovic (I do love Nadal's reactions to big wins, it means everything to those two). I feel for Nadal, but if it's any consolation, he's now playing like a FO favorite, so there is that.

Yeah, Nadal with a body that is cooperating absolutely has to be considered the FO favorite. I almost never root for Nadal, honestly, but I will be rooting for him this year in Paris.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

I'd still give Murray and Djokovic the edge at the French, depending on how the clay court season unfolds.

I thought Nadal was quite lucky to make the AO final. He's always a threat on clay but I don't think this French Open is a sure thing for him like past years.

I'd make 2015-2016 Djokovic the FO favorite, but I'm not too sure about 2017 Djokovic. I could not favor Murray over a *healthy* Nadal on clay though.

A Murray/Nadal final would be intriguing though, to be sure.

If only Shapovalov had this kind of accuracy in the actual match:

Really cool story about how Bouchard bet some fan on Twitter that the Falcons wouldn't lose when they were up big in the Superbowl. He said if the Pats came back, could he get a date with her? She obliged and took this lucky SOB out on a date last night!

That was all over the news here.

He looked pretty calm, despite the awkwardness of the situation. Not easy having everything you do on camera when your just an "average Joe".

If they are gonna just include tennis players for looking good in a bikini why not Alize Lim or Julia Gorges.

If this happened to me when I was 20, I would have totally looked like a deer in headlights. I would have been so nervous to be around a hot girl like this who was also on the pro tennis tour. I give this guy alot of cred because he was able to make it look like it really was his girlfriend in all of those pictures. You have to not give a shit in a situation like this, as it actually works in your favor with hot girls.

The whole thing looks fabricated to me by some marketing rep. Bouchard will make far more from endorsements in her career than actual tennis and this "story" is ready-made for social media.
