Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

Depends how you define sniff. He had a high profile WWF Title Feud with Warrior.

Heels in WWF in that period can't be defined by the title anyway, because they didn't really get the title unless it was just to transition it to another babyface. So to get the title as a heel in the WWF, you just had to be in the right place at the right time. Babyfaces held the title for years at a time, and heels would be lucky to get a few months.

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

The first heel since Superstar Billy Graham (296 days, 1977-1978) to have a consecutive triple-digit title reign was Yokozuna (280 days, 1993-1994)

Inbetween...
Iron Shiek - 28 days
Andre the Giant - a few minutes
Sgt Slaughter - 64 days
Undertaker - 6 days
Ric Flair - 77 days
Ric Flair - 41 days

Savage turned heel somewhere in the midst of his WM4-WM5 reign, but I don't recall when

He turned on Hogan because he was jealous that all the attention Liz was getting from the Hulkster. Was that on an NBC Friday night WWF show?

Yes, it was on the Friday night Main Event special on February 3rd 1989, almost exactly 2 months before WrestleMania V.

Also, Superstar Graham's reign is the only one of its kind for a heel in WWF prior to Yokozuna.

From the recent podcasts I heard, Jake Roberts, Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff have said that Rude didn't get a program with Hogan cause Hogan (as well as many others) didn't trust him in the ring. Apparently he wrestled under the influence too many times for everyones liking and also he was extremely rough on some opponents including Warrior.

At the start of the show he said he was guaranteed a shot whenever he wanted it but he wanted Jericho first.

Thanks for the update. Must have missed that earlier on.

The huge problem all these 205 cruiserweight wrestlers have is that they all wrestle the WWE style. What made the WCW cruiserweight division awesome was seeing all these styles from AAA, New Japan, All Japan, England, Puerto Rico, and many other places. 205 needs to be given freedom and they need to bring more wrestlers, especially masked ones.

What a convoluted mess that whole Sasha-Bailey-Charlotte-Mick-Steph segment was. By the way, is Steph ever going to get her ass handed like her dad did back in the Attitude era?

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

Stepha's not going to push that storyline until absolutely necessary. Attitude era matters because it was Vince trying to survive. No comp. these days means no reason to really be great. People will watch because "what's the main event on raw?" Bummed the guys that are busting their ass daily are getting jobbed to the past. Curious about wrestlemania, but not as much as yesterday afternoon. Conscious unawareness of the wwe

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

I don't see why Goldberg/Lesnar at WrestleMania needed to have a title at stake. The match is already big enough as is but I guess whatever. The whole Goldberg return angle has been pretty predictable and I haven't even watched a ton of it. It seems likely that Lesnar goes over at WrestleMania and then Goldberg disappears more than likely or retires for good.

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

Taker was supposedly so out of shape because of the hip surgery that he had, but he's definitely had more time to get back in shape since his SM & Raw appearances.

The Fastlane main event was so easy to predict it was frustrating. I don't care about Goldberg. Never did. Don't care about Lesnar. I want to see a solid steady build of two time wrestlers that we don't see battle each other week after week. Build it to be something special.

Biggest surprise to me from FL was Sasha beating Nia cleanly, although apparently she was supposed to use the ropes for leverage. After listing to some of the podcasts, a lot of those guys were freaking out about how Nia, Charlotte and Brock were all built up with huge pushes and winning streaks, only to be jobbed out at a crappy PPV. I can see their point.

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

They're really pushing the "X hasn't lost at a PPV" thing lately. "Charlotte hasn't lost a championship match on a PPV that was Raw branded and fell on an even day of the month since 2016"

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

The rumored Wrestlemania card as of today:
Goldberg vs Lesnar for the Universal title
Jericho vs Owens for the US Title
HHH vs Seth Rollins
Orton vs Bray for the WWE title
Gallows and Anderson vs Shaemus and Cesaro vs Enzo and Cass
Taker vs Roman Reigns
AJ Styles vs Shane McMahon
Sasha vs Bailey vs Charlotte
Big Show vs Shaq (I don't think one is happening)
Cena and Nikki vs Mis and Maryse

There are already 10 matches there and we're missing the annual Andre battle royal and a lot of the Smackdown crew including the tag title matches, IC title match, Women's title match. Are there going to be 15+ matches in total?

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

4 (5 if you count Maryse) part time or one off wrestlers on the card, that's not even counting Lesnar in that number. It's said what WM has become.

Part time:
Goldberg
Lesnar
Taker
HHH
Cena
Maryse
Big Show
Jericho (he's leaving after Wrestlemania again)
Shane (is he even considered part time?)

and then there's Shaq, a non wrestler

It makes a little sense. While it doesn't make the match bigger, it elevates the title.

If they left the belt on Owens, the Universal title would be stuck in a midcard match. It would seem insignificant when you have Rollins, Reigns, Triple H, Undertaker, Goldberg and Lesnar all in higher profile matches.

To have the two biggest stars fighting over the Universal title in the main event makes the belt seem more important.

Re: The 2017 Pro Wrestling Thread.

For the WM hype machine, I can easily see Bill Goldberg being a guest on Jimmy Kimmel/Jimmy Fallon/etc. more so than I can see Kevin Owens.
