Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

The last four years have been pretty good for Bryant.

1. NCAA Player of the Year
2. Minor league Player of the Year
3. ROY and making the playoffs
4. MVP and World Series Champs.

Not entirely similar, but all the accolades remind me of Buster Posey:

4 All-Star (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016)
3 World Series champion (2010, 2012, 2014)
NL MVP (2012)
NL Rookie of the Year (2010)
3 Silver Slugger Award (2012, 2014, 2015)
Gold Glove Award (2016)
NL Hank Aaron Award (2012)
NL Comeback Player of the Year (2012)
NL batting champion (2012)
Golden Spikes Award (2008)

But in the end, all that matters are the championships, so it's great that Bryant has one already.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Brett Cecil is sticking with the birds, but of a different feather.

The former Toronto Blue Jays left-handed reliever has signed a four-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, reports Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan. The deal could be in excess of $30 million and is pending a physical.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Yankees release former #2 overall pick Dustin Ackley, who hit .148 in 28 games before injury. I expect he'll become a journeyman now.

Rangers sign Andrew Cashner for one year at $10 million. He's never put it all together, but he has talent, and you know what they say about one-year deals.

Gleyber Torres wins Fall League MVP after hitting .403 at age 19. I'm still OK with the Chapmab deal, though.

I like this move a lot. The Cards still have plenty left to do this offseason though.

Cecil's numbers look good, but long-term deals to relievers tend to not work out. But maybe he'll be like Andrew Miller.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Quote:
Cecil before going on the DL last year w/ a torn lat muscle(May 15th): 16 apperances, 10.1 IP, 17 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, 5.23 ERA, .370/.412/.500/.912.

Cecil after coming off the DL(July 1st): 38 appearances, 26.1 IP, 22 H, 5 BB, 36 K, 3.42 ERA, .222/.267/.394/.661.

Those numbers skew even better too. He struggled a bit for the first few weeks after coming off the DL. Then on July 22, it's like he flipped a switch and was almost lights out the rest of the year.

From July 22 on: 30 G, 20.2 IP, 13 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 30 K, 1.74 ERA, .173/.225/.293/.518.

I also heard his numbers could improve because he had some possible bad luck in BABIP. Of course, maybe it won't help to put the Cards' defense behind him.

@Dbacks: The #Dbacks have acquired pitcher Taijuan Walker and infielder Ketel Marte from the Mariners for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis.

First of many trades for the Dbacks I have to assume.

Damn, they actually got a good return on somebody. They sold very high on Segura.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

I thought Segura was doing it with mirrors at the start of the year, but he sure put up the numbers. He was pretty bad the couple years before, but maybe the personal tragedy did have something to do with it. If that's the Segura the Mariners are getting, then giving up Walker will be worth it. Walker has a high ceiling and shown flashes of putting it altogether, but not quite gotten there yet. I don't yet know if Marte is really an everyday player, much less an everyday player (a lot of people projected him at second when he was in the minors), but he has talent.

I admit I haven't heard of the other Dbacks players. The OF sounds a little old to be a prospect as a 25-year-old rookie, but I hear he was their ML player of the year while playing in AA and AAA, so I guess that's something.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Yeah, Haninger raked, but he also played in AAA Reno, which makes anyone look like Babe Ruth. Segura was the perfect example of a change of scenery will do some good guy. He put up solid numbers for few years in Milwaukee, but once that personal stuff went down, he wasn't the same. He bounced back a big way this year. I'm sad to see him go, if he continues to rake the way he did. Hopefully Walker can be that same kind of change of scenery guy for the Dbacks.

I guess this means it will be Ownings/Ahmed at SS for Dbacks, with Drury likely to take 2B.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

D-backs got a good haul for Segura, Seattle seems to be going all-in, which they should. The Rangers were a mirage last year and the Astros still look iffy to me. They have a good shot at the division this year.

That's a steal for the Dbacks if they can figure out Walker's mechanics. The worst-case scenario for Walker is that he's moved to the bullpen and becomes an elite reliever.

Segura had a nice year but was doing it in Arizona, which played like Coors Field for 2016. There is no chance he repeats that performance in Seattle.

Yeah, the Mariners have a window of one or two more years with this core. Nelson Cruz is still signed, Cano is untradeable and not getting any younger, Seager's in his prime, and Felix may never again be the elite pitcher he once was. If Segura is for real and can be another key piece, then they just need to fill in the complementary holes. I like the pickup of Dan Vogelbach (in the Montgomery trade), who has nothing left to prove in the minors and has the potential to be a contributing player who gets paid nothing. Unfortunately their farm system is barren so they're going to have to try to rebuild that at the same time.

I don't know whether that was expected or not, but it's a nice move by the Mets.

Yeesh, Mariners trade 2014 #6 overall pick Alex Jackson to the Braves for two RHP prospects. Jackson was considered perhaps the best hitting prospect in that draft, but last year was held in extended spring training for what were believed to be off-field issues.
