Hitting for the cycle
If you were a baseball player, would you rather hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run in one game?
Or would you rather hit two doubles, a triple and a home run in the same game?

You'd stay at first base?

You pull up rounding first with an "injury". Then you have your cycle and you get extra love from the fans as you hobble off the field.

Re: Hitting for the cycle
How about 4 triples in a game? Only been twice(one was in AA ball) and both times in the 1800's.
4 homers in a game has been done 16 times.

Re: Hitting for the cycle
The cycle was always a phony achievement and arose from bored position players wanting something to shoot for like the no-hitter.
Now four homers on the other hand...

What you do see, however, is a player trying to stretch a double into a triple if they already have a HR/1B/2B but even then, if the game is close, most players won't take the risk.
A better accomplishment to compare and discuss is 20 K game vs. a perfect game.

Mike Krukow's (Giants commentator) best advice for a pitcher (being sarcastic of course) - pitch a perfect game and hit a HR yourself. You'll never lose.

The hypothetical levels of pitching "perfection" are:
1) No-Hitter = No batter gets a hit.
2) Perfect Game = No-Hitter + no batter reaches base, pitcher faces the minimum 27 batters.
3) Superperfect Game = Perfect Game + no batter puts a ball in play, pitcher faces the minimum 27 batters, striking all of them out.
4) Hyperperfect Game= Superperfect Game + no batter makes contact with any pitch and all 81 pitches thrown are for strikes.
The latter two have not occurred in the Majors yet, but were seen frequently in Tecmo Baseball
