DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

Here's how the DVD Talk Euro 2016 Pool will run:

- You select at least 3, but no more than 5, teams from the list of teams below. Each team has an assigned dollar value and you have $100 to spend. The combined value of your selected teams may not exceed $100.
- Points are earned based on how your selected teams fare. The player who gets the most points wins.
- Players may post their selections at any time prior to the kickoff of the first game.
- Changes may be made prior to the first kickoff, but can only be made by posting an additional message to this thread. Any post which bears an "edited" timestamp will be ignored.
- No two players may select an identical set of teams.
- Tiebreakers described below using jersey number of the player scoring the final goal of the tourney.

TEAM VALUES
$50 = ESP-Spain, GER-Germany
$35 = ENG-England, FRA-France, ITA-Italy, POR-Portugal
$25 = AUT-Austria, BEL-Belguim, SUI-Switzerland
$20 = CRO-Croatia, CZE-Czech Republic/Czechia, POL-Poland, ROM-Romania, RUS-Russia
$10 = HUN-Hungary, SVK-Slovakia, SWE-Sweden, TUR-Turkey, UKR-Ukraine
$5 = ALB-Albania, IRL-Republic of Ireland, ISL-Iceland, NIR-Northern Ireland, WAL-Wales

SCORING
Group Phase
Win = 3 points
Draw = 1 point
Advancing to Knockout Phase = 1 bonus point

Knockout Phase
Win in regulation = 3 points
Win in OT/Shootout = 2 points
Loss in OT/Shootout = 1 point
Multiplier = x2 in Round of 16, x4 in Quarter-Finals, x8 in Semi-Finals, x4 in the Third Place game, x16 in Finals

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Multiplier for the Third Place game has been cut from past pools. Instead of x12 it is now x4. This now makes is less likely that a team that loses in the Semi-Finals will get more points than a team that wins in the Semi-Finals. There is NO Third Place game this year.

Maximum Possible Points (for one team)
Group Phase: 3 wins = 9+1 = 10
Round of 16: Regulation win = 3x2 = 6
Quarter-Finals: Regulation win = 3x4 = 12
Semi-Finals: Regulation win = 3x8 = 24
Finals: Regulation win = 3x16 = 48
TOTAL = 100 points

Tiebreaker procedure:
- In addition to your set of teams, please provide a jersey number.
- In the case of a tie, the tiebreaker will be the number of the jersey worn by the player who kicks the final goal (whether in regulation, overtime, or in a shootout*) of the championship match. The DVD Talk player who comes closest to that jersey number will be the winner.
- If two or more DVD Talk players are equally close, the winner shall be the person who posted their picks earliest.
- If no jersey number is chosen, you will be assigned a value of 99.

* In the event of a shootout, the "final goal" will be awarded to the player who puts the last ball past the keeper, regardless of whether or not he is credited with an official "goal".

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

Okay, time to start unveiling our team prices. In the interest of economic equity and fairness, team prices are quoted in Euros:

The FIVE DOLLAR EURO teams are:

ALBANIA (ALB)

Qualified as 2nd (behind POR) in Qualifying Group I

FIFA World Ranking:
#45 (Current, 5/2016)
#22 (Highest, 8/2015)
#124 (Lowest, 8/1997)

1st Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = "Shqiponjat" (The Eagles)

Group A (w/FRA ROM SUI)

After narrowly losing to Austria in a revealing pre-tournament friendly, an air of uncertainty hangs around the Albanian national team. Supporters know their side harbour no inferiority complex in confronting more seasoned European nations. Yet some fans question if this side will be brave enough to topple the giants.

Qualifying record: GP8, W4 D2 L2, F10 A5, Pts14

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND (IRL)

Qualified as 3rd (behind GER + POL) in Qualifying Group D, won play-off vs BIH

FIFA World Ranking
#31 (Current, 5/2016)
#6 (Highest, 8/1993)
#70 (Lowest, 7/2014)

3rd Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Group Stage (2012, 1988)
Nickname = "The Green Army"

Group E (w/BEL ITA SWE)

A lot of good, little bad, and then it got a tad ugly. The March friendly victory over Switzerland showed a solidity at the back that their game is built on, the draw with Slovakia produced an attacking game that's yearned for, and it all added to the sense of whispered optimism that Sweden are there for the taking as is a second-round spot. But if they do it, it'll be without goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who has now been lost to injury.

Qualifying record: GP12, W6 D4 L2, F22 A8, Pts22

-

ICELAND (ISL)

Qualified as 2nd (behind CZE) in Qualifying Group A

FIFA World Ranking
#35 (Current, 5/2016)
#23 (Highest, 10/2015)
#131 (Lowest, 6/2012)

1st Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = "Strákarnir Okkar" (Our Boys)

Group F (w/AUT HUN POR)

Iceland fans are waiting with great excitement for their country's debut in a major competition. After bad results in winter's friendlies, a 3-2 win in Greece and good form of key players such as Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson and Basel's Birkir Bjarnason has raised the spirits again and reawakened the hopes they can spring a surprise in France.

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D2 L2, F17 A6, Pts20

-

NORTHERN IRELAND (NIR)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group F

FIFA World Ranking
#26 (Current, 5/2016)
#26 (Highest, 5/2016)
#129 (Lowest, 9/2012)

1st Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = "Green and White Army"

Group C (w/GER POL UKR)

Manager Michael O'Neill's new four-year contract reinforces Northern Ireland's buoyant mood ahead of their debut Euro tournament. As do recent friendlies, a draw against Wales and victory over Slovenia, which crowned a record 10-game unbeaten run. With Chris Brunt out because of injury, QPR striker Conor Washington's shock emergence now eases the responsibility on talisman Kyle Lafferty.

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D3 L1, F16 A8, Pts21

-

WALES (WAL)

Qualified as 2nd (behind BEL) in Qualifying Group B

FIFA World Ranking
#24 (Current, 5/2016)
#8 (Highest, 10/2015)
#117 (Lowest, 8/2011)

1st Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = "Y Dreigiau" (The Dragons)

Group B (w/ENG RUS SVK)

While we're busy giddily swapping spare Mesut Ozil stickers for any rare Chris Gunter ones in the pre-tournament sticker album, the only uncertainty in Chris Coleman's squad rests on its periphery. Will he take a ninth defender, and if so which Adam -- Matthews or Henley? How will he condense a nine-man supporting midfield cast into five places?

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D3 L1, F11 A4, Pts21

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

The TEN DOLLAR EURO teams are:

HUNGARY (HUN)

Qualified as 3rd (behind NIR + ROM) in Qualifying Group F, won play-off vs NOR

FIFA World Ranking
#18 (Current, 5/2016)
#18 (Highest, 5/2016)
#87 (Lowest, 7/1996)

3rd Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Third Place (1964)
Nickname = "The Magical Magyars"

Group F (w/AUR ISL POR)

Hungary head to the European Championships for the first time in 44 years and even though they are ranked as outsiders by some bookmakers, there's still plenty of reasons to be optimistic. There is youth, a togetherness and a delightfully enigmatic coaching duo of Bernd Storck and Andreas Moller, which makes you think this side may have a shock or two in them.

Qualifying record: GP12, W6 D4 L2, F14 A10, Pts22

-

SLOVAKIA (SVK)

Qualified as 2nd (behind ESP) in Qualifying Group C

FIFA World Ranking
#32 (Current, 5/2016)
#14 (Highest, 8/2015)
#150 (Lowest, 12/1993)

1st Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = N/A
Nickname = "Slovenskí Sokoli" (Slovak Falcons)

Group B (w/ENG RUS WAL)

Despite going undefeated in their past five last matches, coach Jan Kozak still has a few problems to solve, particularly the centre-forward position. Michal Duris scored three goals against Switzerland and Iceland but, unexpectedly, 34-year-old Robert Vittek could be another option, as he played well in March's 2-2 draw vs. Ireland.

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D1 L2, F17 A8, Pts22

-

SWEDEN (SWE)

Qualified as 3rd (behind AUT + RUS) in Qualifying Group G, won play-off vs DEN

FIFA World Ranking
#36 (Current, 5/2016)
#2 (Highest, 11/1994)
#45 (Lowest, 11/2015)

5th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Semi-finals (1992)
Nickname = "Blĺgult" (The Blue-Yellow)

Group E (w/BEL IRL ITA)

Sweden enter the Euros more reliant than ever on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who wants to leave a mark on what is likely his last major tournament. But his supporting cast is unimpressive, and the striker must continue his strong club form if Sweden are to advance from a tough Group E.

Qualifying record: GP12, W6 D4 L2, F19 A12, Pts22

-

TURKEY (TUR)

Qualified as 3rd (behind CZE + ISL) in Qualifying Group A, directly qualified for finals as best 3rd place side

FIFA World Ranking
#13 (Current, 5/2016)
#5 (Highest, 6/2004)
#67 (Lowest, 10/1993)

4th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Semi-Finals (2008)
Nickname = "Ay-Yıldızlılar" (The Crescent-Stars)

Group D (w/CRP CZE ESP)

You would never have guessed Turkey scraped through qualification based on recent form, which sees the Crescent Stars unbeaten in 13 games. Fatih Terim still has a key decision to make, though, regarding whether to stick or twist up front with Burak Yilmaz, who is plying his trade in China. May's friendly with England will be important.

Qualifying record: GP10, W5 D3 L2, F14 A9, Pts18

-

UKRAINE (UKR)

Qualified as 3rd (behind ESP + SVK) in Qualifying Group C, won play-off vs SLO

FIFA World Ranking
#22 (Current, 5/2016)
#11 (Highest, 2/2007)
#132 (Lowest, 9/1993)

2nd Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Group Stage (2012)
Nickname = "Збірна" (The Team)

Group C (w/GER NIR POL)

Based on the lack of major experiments with the squad in recent friendlies, manager Mykhaylo Fomenko has already decided on his starting XI for the Euros. In the coming months, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk -- Ukraine's most capped player who announced he's likely to retire from international football after the competition -- will have to convince the coach he deserves to be part of the squad, let alone the first-team setup.

Qualifying record: GP12, W7 D2 L3, F14 A4, Pts23

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

The TWENTY DOLLAR EURO teams are:

CROATIA (CRO)

Qualified as 2nd (behind ITA) in Qualifying Group H

FIFA World Ranking
#23 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 1/1999)
#125 (Lowest, 3/1994)

4th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Quarterfinals (1996, 2008)
Nickname = "Vatreni" (The Blazers)

Group D (w/CZE ESP TUR)

No Euro fever, just loads of unanswered questions -- that, in a nutshell, is the general mood in Croatia ahead of the tournament. Many of those concern the hugely unpopular manager Ante Cacic, whose experiments with tactics and player selection have done little to stir up the hopes of the nation.

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D3 L1, F20 A5 Pts20
Note: Croatia were deducted one point after charges for racist behaviour in the match against Italy at Stadion Poljud.

-

CZECH REPUBLIC/"CZECHIA" (CZE)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group A

FIFA World Ranking
#29 (Current, 5/2016)
#2 (Highest, 3/2006)
#67 (Lowest, 3/1994)

9th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1976)
Nickname = "Paso Leati" (Those Lions)

Group D (w/CRO ESP TUR)

Czechia, not the Czech Republic, could be at Euro 2016, but the real change lies in the team's style. While many of the Euro 2012 players remain, coach Pavel Vrba has transformed the team into an attacking, entertaining side. A tendency toward defensive lapses means it's unlikely they'll make a deep run, but at least they'll be fun to watch.

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D1 L2, F19 A14, Pts22

-

POLAND (POL)

Qualified as 2nd (behind GER) in Qualifying Group D

FIFA World Ranking
#27 (Current, 5/2016)
#16 (Highest, 9/2007)
#78 (Lowest, 11/2013)

3rd Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Group Stage (2008, 2012)
Nickname = "Białe Orły" (The White Eagles)

Group C (w/GER NIR UKR)

Last month's friendly victories against Serbia and Finland have helped to propel Poland to 27th in the latest FIFA rankings, their highest position since 2008. Their two front men, Robert Lewandowski and Arkadiusz Milik, have also now amassed 46 league goals between them this season; something that the defences of Northern Ireland, Germany and Ukraine will be thinking about.

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D3 L1, F33 A10, Pts21

-

ROMANIA (ROM)

Qualified as 2nd (behind NIR) in Qualifying Group F

FIFA World Ranking
#19 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 9/1997)
#57 (Lowest, 9/2012)

4th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Quarter-finals (1994)
Nickname = "Tricolorii" (The Tricolours)

Group A (w/ALB FRA SUI)

The 0-0 home draw to Spain in a friendly played last month didn't answer many of manager Anghel Iordanescu's questions regarding selection. Romania discovered a new No.10 -- Steaua's in-form creative brain Nicusor Stanciu -- but still has to come up with vital decisions in central midfield and attack.

Qualifying record: GP10, W5 D5 L0, F11 A2, Pts20

-

RUSSIA (RUS)

Qualified as 2nd (behind AUT) in Qualifying Group G

FIFA World Ranking
#27 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 4/1996)
#40 (Lowest, 12/1998)

11th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1960, as USSR)
Nickname = "Российский Футбольный Союз" (Putin's Muscular Lads)

Group B (w/ENG SVK WAL)

CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky has turned Russia's fortunes around after replacing Fabio Capello last August, but continuing uncertainty regarding his double position is starting to be problematic. Key players Roman Shirokov and Aleksandr Kokorin are off form and became benchwarmers at their new clubs. Artyom Dzyuba is on fire, though. Overall, fans are cautiously optimistic, but no longer excited like they were in the autumn.

Qualifying record: GP10, W6 D2 L2, F21 A5, Pts20

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

The TWENTY-FIVE DOLLAR EURO teams are:

AUSTRIA (AUT)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group G

FIFA World Ranking
#11 (Current, 5/2016)
#10 (Highest, 3/2016)
#105 (Lowest, 7/2008)

2nd Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = First Round (2008)
Nickname = "Das Team" (Das Monkey's Team)

Group F (w/HUN ISL POR)

After promising performances in qualifying, Austria's last two friendlies in March offered the good and the bad. While they secured a strong win against Albania, Marcel Koller's team lost a disappointing match against Turkey. In the latter, an excellent free kick from Hakan Calhanoglu and a big mistake from Austria goalkeeper Ramazan Ozcan allowed Turkey to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win through grit and determination in what was a hard-fought duel.

Qualifying record: GP10, W9 D1 L0, F22 A5, Pts28

-

BELGIUM (BEL)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group B

FIFA World Ranking
#2 (Current, 5/2016)
#1 (Highest, 3/2016)
#71 (Lowest, 6/2007)

5th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Runners-Up (1980)
Nickname = "Les Diables Rouges" (The Red Devils)

Group E (w/IRL ITA SWE)

Belgians are cautious. Their team has recently topped FIFA's rankings but injuries and loss of form have dampened enthusiasm. The striker position causes debate: Marc Wilmots isn't fond of Romelu Lukaku and so he could go for Divock Origi (providing the injury he sustained in the Merseyside derby isn't too serious) or even Michy Batshuayi. The coach won't get credit for success, but he'll be blamed for failure.

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D2 L1, F24 A5, Pts23

-

SWITZERLAND (SUI)

Qualified as 2nd (behind ENG) in Qualifying Group E

FIFA World Ranking
#14 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 8/1993)
#83 (Lowest, 12/1998)

4th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Group Stage (1996, 2004, 2008)
Nickname = "Schweizer pati" (Swiss Army Knives)

Group A (w/ALB FRA ROM)

Switzerland are not in the best of shape; some players are struggling at club level and their performances in March, when they lost to Ireland and Bosnia without scoring, added to the pessimism. Coach Vladimir Petkovic has struggled to implement his philosophy, the defence has looked vulnerable and the attack toothless.

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D0 L3, F24 A8, Pts21

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

The pool is not yet open, but will be once the final team values are revealed. When that happens, it'll be "go" time. Remember, the idea here is pretty simple:

1) You will have $100 to spend
2) You use that to buy teams. You must buy at least 3, but no more than 5. You CANNOT select the same set of teams as anyone who picked before you - yours must be unique.
3) You also submit a jersey # as a tiebreaker. See OP for how that is used.
4) You earn points as your teams win/draw and progress deeper into the tourney
5) Most points = winner! Jersey # used as tiebreak. In case of a tie-tie, earlier picks beat later picks.

The THIRTY-FIVE DOLLAR EURO teams are:

ENGLAND (ENG)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group E

FIFA World Ranking
#10 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 8/2012)
#27 (Lowest, 2/1996)

8th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1968)
Nickname = "The Three Lions"

Group B (w/RUS SVK WAL)

The theme seems to be quiet optimism. A squad with young, exciting and in-form attacking talent beat Germany in Berlin, only to display some defensive frailties a few days later in losing to Netherlands. Other than the defence, the only major worry seems to be Roy Hodgson trying to cram Wayne Rooney into the side.

Qualifying record: GP10, W10 D0 L0, F31 A3, Pts31

-

FRANCE (FRA)

Qualified as Host

FIFA World Ranking
#21 (Current, 5/2016)
#1 (Highest, 5/2002)
#27 (Lowest, 9/2010)

8th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1984 & 2000)
Nickname = "Les Bleus" (The Blues)

Group A (w/ALB ROM SUI)

The hosts are shaping up nicely after recent friendly wins over Netherlands and Russia. Players such as Dimitri Payet and N'Golo Kante impressed and both should now feature in Didier Deschamps' Euro plans. With Karim Benzema's unavailability already settled, Les Bleus can move forward and prepare serenely.

Qualifying record: N/A

-

ITALY (ITA)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group H

FIFA World Ranking
#15 (Current, 5/2016)
#1 (Highest, 9/2007)
#17 (Lowest, 10/2015)

9th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1968)
Nickname = "Gli Azzurri" (The Blues)

Group E (w/BEL IRL SWE)

The Italian national team has been dealt a setback with news that Claudio Marchisio, one of the star midfielders with bags full of experience, has suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of the Euros. With Marco Verratti struggling to recover as well, head coach Antonio Conte has to decide whether to depend on ageing veterans such as Andrea Pirlo, or roll the dice on those with less experience. Which way will he go to find balance?

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D3 L0, F16 A7, Pts24

-

PORTUGAL (POR)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group I

FIFA World Ranking
#8 (Current, 5/2016)
#3 (Highest, 6/2014)
#43 (Lowest, 8/1998)

6th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Third Place (1966)
Nickname = "A Selecçăo" (The Selection)

Group F (w/AUT HUN ISL)

The brilliant club form of many of Portugal's starting XI in France has increased optimism of a good showing at Euro 2016. The consistently outstanding displays of midfielders Joao Mario (Sporting) and Danilo (Porto) and some guy named Cristiano Ronaldo especially bodes well. When even much-maligned striker Eder is scoring goals and getting rave reviews, you get the feeling things may be falling into place at just the right time for Portugal. Bring it on.

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

Just kidding....

The FIFTY DOLLAR EURO teams are:

SPAIN (ESP)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group C

FIFA World Ranking
#6 (Current, 5/2016)
#1 (Highest, 7/2014)
#25 (Lowest, 3/1998)

9th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1964, 2008 & 2012)
Nickname = "La Furia Roja" (The Red Fury)

Group D (w/CRO CZE TUR)

Can the reigning champions make it three titles in a row? Undefeated in the past 16 months, a rejuvenated Spain have recovered some of their swagger after their fiasco at the 2014 World Cup. Their embarrassment of riches in midfield only lacks the right finisher up front. If coach Vicente del Bosque finds him, the Spaniards could win it all.

Qualifying record: GP10, W9 D0 L1, F23 A3, Pts27

-

GERMANY (GER)

Qualified as Winner of Qualifying Group D

FIFA World Ranking
#5 (Current, 5/2016)
#1 (Highest, 7/2015)
#22 (Lowest, 3/2006)

11th Appearance in European Finals
Previous Best = Champions (1972, 1980 & 1996)
Nickname = "Die Mannschaft" (The Team)

Group C (w/NIR POL UKR)

Bastian Schweinsteiger. Jerome Boateng. Emre Can. Benedikt Howedes. Julian Draxler. Injured! Worries. So many worries. Three at the back? Who will score the goals? More injuries? Pre-tournament depression. Will they make it past the round of 16? Team spirit is the key, and Thomas Muller.

Qualifying record: GP10, W7 D1 L2, F24 A9, Pts22

Re: DVDTalk Euro 2016 Pool

Crud. The spreadsheet didn't get saved in my DropBox and is sitting on my work PC. Okay.... picks may be submitted, but the tables won't be updated until sometime tomorrow after work.

Please select 3-5 teams, with a total value of $100 or less. Please ensure that you have not submitted the same set of teams as a previous player. And please also provide a Jersey #. The Jersey will be used as a tiebreak - in case 2 or more players end tied, whomever guesses closer to the # of the player who scores the final goal of the tournament will be the winner.

Picks that have "Edited by..." stamps on them will be ignored. If you decide to change your pick please do so by adding a new post to the thread.

The pool is now officially OPEN. Good luck to all.
