Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

Maybe Mitch isn't aware that the tanking's over? Ah what does he care, he and Jimmy are all but gone by this time next year.

Or is he secretly best friends with Lebron? Or is this Mitch screwing with the other teams hoping to resign their big men?

Of note is that it seems like the vast majority of players who have played center for the Lakers are free agents. Hibbert, Jordan Hill, sleepy Kaman, Dwight, Sacre, Pau. And Bynum is of course always available.

Edited to add: just saw this on reddit from user rjvir:

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

I'm seriously flabbergasted by the Mozgov thing. I hope the folks speculating that his contract is structured to be backloaded or something is right, because otherwise it makes no sense for the money and years at the start of free agency. I get that guys like Whiteside or Horford may have zero interest in going to the Lakers, but I can't figure out how to spin this positively at all.

Meanwhile...

All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan has agreed to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst and multiple reports.

The deal is for five years, $139 million-plus, according to The Vertical.

After the ridiculous Mozgov news, at least a good, but expected contract agreement came away.

Jordan Clarkson has reached agreement on a four-year, $50M deal to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources tell The Vertical.

Well, Mozgov does have the sort of Championship experience that Luke Walton appreciates - he watched it all from the bench.

funny that espn is today reporting this very thing, when Noah and the Knicks supposedly could not possibly have talked terms before today.

Seems like an overpay to keep Clarkson to me.

Jeremy Lin to the Nets for 3 years, 36 million.

Batum stays with the Hornets for 5 years, $120 million (seriously, guys like Batum, Beal, DeRozan getting max or near max money, yikes)

Andre Drummond nearing a deal to stay with the Pistons for 5 years, $130 million.

Yeah I think you mentioned they were probably going to overpay him. It's good they are retaining him, but geez $12.5M per year? He made $845K last season.

Some of these salaries for second tier free agents are absurd.

I saw Whiteside is getting $24.5M per season from the Heat.

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

This Oprah like "everybody gets a max (or close to max) deal" system seems totally kind of unsustainable long term. I think I understand why they made a change, but I can see needing to make a change way from the solution as well.

That said, Laker fans should get used to top free agents not even considering them in the discussion until they can start consistently winning again.

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

Clarkson's deal isn't really an overpay in this market.

And remember this : next year not only will the cap hit $110M, but there will be a $90M floor. If your total team salary is at $75M, then at the end of the year you'd have to take that $15M you didn't spend and give it to the players you already have on your team. Under this system, overpaying can't really exist. Last season 23/30 teams wouldn't have hit the salary floor of 90% of the cap.
There are only so many NBA players and you literally HAVE to give your money to 15 of them.

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

I think you're seeing these second tier guys get snatched up because many teams know that other teams are after the big players, and most will lose out on them, and then they'll come looking for these second tier guys. So some teams are trying to go at them early and lock them up, before the other teams come calling in a week or two.

That, plus the salary cap issues that Decker mentioned. That will stabilize (presumably) after a new CBA.

Can't say I agree with that analysis, even as someone already aware of a cap floor. Overpaying can certainly exist and has nothing to do with the existence of a cap floor, and I can see that just looking at Mozgov (barring any creative backloading of money and team options).

Funny enough, i'd be more understanding if they gave Clarkson the max he can currently make (4/58 or so?) and it was Mozgov making 4/50. Really, I just hate Mozgov.

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

Teams a can certainly still overpay when one looks at the player getting paid and the other players that may be just as good, or better, that just were not given the same chances for a multitude of reasons.

Mozgov is a great example. I'm sure there are other talented, younger, players that can do what he has done in the NBA.

DeMar DeRozan is apparently the richest player in NBA history. His deal is 5 years, $145M

ESPN showed oddsmakers listing Boston as the most likely landing place for Dwight Howard. Maybe he'd like playing for Stevens?

Re: 2016 NBA Off Season Thread

I didn't really mean it as a defense of the Mozgov deal. I think that's horrible as well. I just think we are entering a new reality and mediocre players are going to get absurdly overpaid.

I meant it more as a defense of Clarkson who is a serviceable player. But honestly, this new NBA is like the UK after Brexit. There are so many unintended consequences. Mitch had been chugging along smug in his conviction that his cap space and the Lakers name would land him a couple of big fish. Now everyone has money and anyone remotely worthy of anything near a max contract can get it on literally any contender - and mostly folks want to stay where they are anyway.

You show me the road map of how the Lakers get from where they were yesterday with a young, bad team to a team that spends at least $90M in 2017 without significantly overpaying for marginal talent (or using Jedi Mind Tricks).
