So what is the over/under that Kerber never wins another Slam? Her win looks more like a flash in the pan than a new contender being born.

She's been up and down, but she's been a top ten player over the last few years. She's now ranked 2nd with her win, a career high, but of recent years, the only multiple wins at majors aside from Serena have been from Sharapova, Azarenka, and Kvitova if I'm not mistaken (on the singles side at least). Top ranked players drop like flies at majors early lately, they're far less consistent than the men's side. I've liked Kerber's play ever since I saw her make it all the way to the final at Cincinnati in 2012 (where she easily beat a very off Serena Williams). She has great defensive skills and her shot making is superb, but I wouldn't bet against Serena anytime soon.

Li Na also won 2 slams (French and Australian), but she's no longer playing.

I wouldn't be surprised if she won 2-3 more Majors but also if she never made another final. She is a steady top 10 who is a great shotmaker and mind for the game but if certain players are on their game they can hit her off the court.

I would say that the odds are good (but not great) that she never wins another one. However, she has definitely made substantial recent improvements to ger game. Up until this AO, she has been a somewhat consistent 3/4 rounder with the occasional QF/SF. She never even got past the third round of a major last year. I think, going forward, she is going to be much more consistent in making QF/SF with the occasional final.

I cannot wait for Serena to retire. I was just thinking the other day how amazing women's tennis would be without Serena in the mix right now. There is lots of talent but no single dominant player sans Serena.

Unfortunately, Serena is so far ahead of everyone else that she could probably play until she was 40 and still be a GS threat.

Fed had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Out for a month.

Uh-oh... surgery at the age of 34. Could the end be near for Fed?

It may be near, but not from a torn meniscus. It's not that major of an injury if recovery is only a month.

Oddly enough, not even tennis related:

Federer's freak knee accident - reportedly as he played with his children last Saturday in a Melbourne park following his semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic...
Damn kids.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Nadal's decline continues. Last week, he lost to Dominic Thiem (who actually looks like a future top 10 guy) and yesterday he lost to Pablo Cuevas, a journeyman clay courter.

Guys are not scared of him anymore, not even on clay. He's lost footspeed and his groundstrokes don't have the same sting and devastating topspin that they used to. In his prime he was also incredibly consistent and rarely beat himself, but he makes alot of unforced errors nowadays.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Nadal can't play defense and grind guys down anymore. He tries to be more aggressive and play closer to the baseline, but he doesn't have the game for it (the risk is more errors but the reward isn't there). Shots not flat enough, topspin dropping short, etc... And his serve has always been mediocre but it's hurting him now since he can't dictate like he used to.

In his prime on clay, he would have eaten a guy with a 1HBH like Cuevas alive.

So you're telling me if Fed and Nadal meet at the French this year, Fed has a chance?

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Plus, he'll get some practice at Monte Carlo:

Roger Federer has delayed his comeback from knee surgery by a month.

The 34-year-old world number three had initially intended to return at Indian Wells in March, but will instead wait for the Monte Carlo Masters in April.

This is true but I think if her skills erode to where she was just a top 10 player who had a marginal chance to win a Major she would retire. I don't think she will be one of those people who hang on just to increase her career win total

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

I don't see Serena hanging around like Martina did for years after her prime ended. Serena has made a lot of money on and off the court, so there isn't much incentive to hang around unless she is dead-set on getting all the female Slam records.

Federer's surgery is pretty routine for an athlete his age but it signals a likely decline. 2016 will be the last year he has a chance to remain in the top five rankings. His speed will only continue to slow down, forcing him to play shorter and shorter points.

It's sad watching Nadal play these days, struggling against players he used to dismiss with one hand tied behind his back. I don't know where he goes unless he resorts to PEDs. I still think he carries too much weight for his demanding style of play.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Thiem wins Acapulco, his fifth ATP title (in 10 months) and his 1st 500 event. He has the most wins of any player (18) this year and he's broken the top 15. I like this kid, smart, focused, competitive, and while he was already pretty good on clay, winning Acapulco on hard shows his game can be pretty good on all surfaces.

I don't know what the heck that trophy is supposed to be.

Alexander Zverev is the future of men's tennis. It would stun me if he doesn't win several majors and eventually hits #1 once he physically matures. He's the next all-time great waiting to happen.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

I'd love to see that since he's German.

Bud Collins finally died today. He was 86. The last few years when he was still interviewing players were painfully awkward to watch. Should have retired 20 years ago.

Wrong on all three. She is a druggie. Tested positive for Meldonium at the AO.

a druggie?

according to her statement, she's been taking the same drug for 10 years, and it became prohibited in 2016 without her knowledge.
