Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Milos looked like a very credible Slam threat until Murray took control.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Milos ran out of gas plus thigh injury clearly bothered him. Still great tourney for him.

Good luck to Murray, he's gonna need it.

I guess Serena just wasn't playing her best.

Nope, not at all. But 95% of the players on tour still would have lost to Serena today anyway. Add in the pressure of being in your first GS final and the number goes up to 98%. Kerber deserves a lot of credit.

Also,

It was apparent from the opening games that Serena wasn't in top form. Kerber does have some tricky angles on her groundstrokes.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Agreed with JFoo that Serena was not playing her best but the way she was playing today is usually enough to beat most players. Huge credit to Kerber for how mentally tough she was in her 1st GS final she won it out there today and not a case of Serena choking it.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Yup, big props to Kerber. Serena played like crap in the 1st set, but stormed back in the 2nd, which included her usual drama queen screaming and other antics. At that point, I thought Kerber was toast, but she wasn't intimidated and kept fighting to the very end. Even when her 5-2 lead in the 3rd started to disappear and she lost her serve to reduce the lead to 5-4, she managed to keep her cool.

Congrats to Kerber!

Seems Serena might be a bit of a better loser than she used to be?

Also,
Sarcasm meter off. I was alluding to her perennially poor sportsmanship. She never credits others.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Very happy for Kerber. She is a very good player, I thought if anyone could beat Serena, it was her.

Djokovic vs Murray final was inevitable. Will Djokovic surpass Fed? Who knows. If Djokovic stays healthy and fast, sure, but if he's cursed with the decline of being at the top at 28 years of age, then I think it will be very tough to win 7 more majors. Plus Raonic looks better than ever. And we still can't count out Nadal, despite his early exit at AO.

Fed needs a 2nd seed and Djokovic out early in a major to stand any chance at another GS title. I just don't see a third wind for him. Would love to be proven wrong, and Roger keeps getting deep into majors in his mid 30s, but I think age has really caught up with him. If Roger doesn't win a major this year, he never will again. Not that that's a failure on his part, but just the reality for him.

I don't think Nadal wins another GS in his career.

Thanks for answering my question.

Great player no question, but I will never root for her because of this.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Who knew the real championship match was Simon-Djokovic?!

I'm not sure Djokovic feels particularly threatened by Murray's game over five sets. He plays far more aggressively against Fed at the Slams than he does against Murray. I don't think Djokovic believes Murray can hang with him anymore for five sets. I never questioned Murray's conditioning before his surgery but it has never really been the same since his return. Murray came out flat in that first set and then looked seriously winded by the third set.

I found this Aussie Open very forgettable in terms of play on the men's side, one of the poorer Slams by that measure in the Big Four era. Hopefully that is just a temporary thing.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

AO Final The Clone Wars, like watching paint dry. It was a tad unfair to pit a lesser model against a superior model, but at least we were spared a 10 hour session of Pong ending in a draw.

Too bad Raonic lost, he might have gotten smoked but at least the contrast in styles would have been interesting.

I would say the big 4 era is Over imo. I could see Roger,Rafa and Murray not winning another Slam the rest of their careers. They are all closer to the rest of the field now then they are too Novak. Barring injury the only thing stopping Djokovic from winning all 4 Slams is Stan at the FO or someone like Cilic or a youngster having the week of their life the 2nd week of Wimbledon or USO.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

I largely agree that the Big 4 era is over. What a golden age of elite tennis it was for many years. I strongly doubt Federer and Nadal ever win another major. Murray is still young enough to win a couple more Slams if Djokovic gets injured or falters.

I was stunned by the ESPN poll that showed 52% of the audience believed Djokovic would surpass Fed's career Grand Slam record. Djokovic could win three Slams this year and still only have an outside shot to reach 18 Slams. I do think his chances have improved as his tennis has shifted from a defensive style in his younger days to a more complete player with a fairly big serve and forehand.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

I just wonder how long Novak will be able to keep his speed up long enough to win 18 majors. He's getting close to thirty, and I don't care how great he is now, his speed will go. Just ask Nadal.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

The Aussie Open have always been his best slam. Let's see how he fares as the season unfolds before determining his chances of getting to 18 slams. But I do agree he is pulling far away from the rest of the field.
