I really hope ten years after Serena retires we don't find out that she was juicing the whole time.

I doubt it. You'd think of anyone on tour, she'd be tested the most since she's built like a brick shithouse.

i don't want to knock her. Hard though in this day and age to not be a skeptic though.

I've always been a Venus fan, but not as much for Serena.

Better second set from Radwanska.

Grats Serena.

Go Konta!

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Serena was annoying a few years ago when she was being a sore loser at the US Open, but she's redeemed herself as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't mind seeing someone, anyone give her competition.

Easy first set for Djokovic. All but over for Federer.

Roger takes the third set. Still see Djoker finishing in the fourth. Hope I'm wrong but I'm not delusional.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Delay in play because of supposed rain coming in?!?! Just when Roger has momentum, a stupid rain delay once again. Maybe it will give Roger some thought in playing his return game. If he wants to beat Novak, he should work on his return, but at 34, that's a tall order.

Seriously, the roof closing before rain even hits is bullshit.

With the roof closed, turning into a server-centric 4th set. Helping Roger so far.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

A four set win for Djokovic, as many here predicted. Roger needed a better game early on. Losing the first two sets, it was all too easy for Djokovic to just be patient and wait for Roger to dip, which most knew he would at this point in his career in best of five. It's disappointing, but not unexpected for Fed fans. Djokovic was the better player, and Roger better start doing yoga and sprint exercises if he wants to beat Novak in a GS.

Evidently. Djokovic is too good. Surprised Fed took a set from him. Just prolonged the inevitable. Worse match against him since the ATP Tour Final.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Djokovic dismantled Federer. The only other time I've seen that happen at a Slam was Nadal beating Federer at the French Open. I actually felt sorry for Fed during those first two sets, he looked stunned it was happening to him so easily.

I don't think Murray has much of a shot, if any. A couple of matches back, ESPN ran a very interesting graphic comparing Djovokic's ball-striking from 2011 to 2015. He's hitting much flatter these days and has consistently moved his contact point up the court since 2011. He's not playing the same game everyone else on the planet is playing at the moment. He still can't drop-shot or lob to save his life, but he's practically perfected all his other tennis skills.

I think it's a fait accompli that Djokovic passes Nadal in Slam victories. Fed's career total is still very far away, that is far more iffy.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Like Federer, Murray needs to have Djokovic out early to have a chance at winning a GS these days. I guess at this point I'd like to see if Raonic is the real deal now that he's not just a serve bot and doesn't end up in a tie break in every match like he was still doing just last year. I don't see any other young player who is a threat at majors other than Milos as of right now.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Predictable outcome men's and women's finals. Joker will beat Murray in 4. Kerber will do better against Serena than she ever has before and still lose either in straights or in a blowout third set.

Honestly, the only remaining match I am that interested in seeing is the Hingis/Mirza women's doubles final tonight. At least it was a fairly entertaining Slam while it lasted.

Edit: I am a space cadet tonight and had forgotten that Raonic/Murray hasn't been played yet. I am still interested in that and, if Raonic wins, I'll be a bit more interested in the final.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

What are the chances that Djokovic finishes as the man with the most Slams who never won one of the four?

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

I'd put money down that Djokovic will win a French Open before he retires. Probably even a couple. He has been a finalist at the French 3 times, including the last two years. He's the heavy favorite to win it this year. He wants that title more than anything to complete the career Slam, he's said as much.

Still even possible for Novak to win a calendar slam too, something which Roger or Rafa never did, though it is still too early to tell this year. I don't see anyone stopping him (unless it is Stan again in a slam final )

Whenever I see this thread bumped I think it'll be about the match fixing stories I've been seeing recently.

Hell he could pull off the Golden Slam since we've got the Olympics too this year. Steffi Graf in 88 is the only person to ever accomplish the feat.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

What happened in the first two sets (only saw the last 2)? Fed's serve was off or Djokovic zoning? 6-1, 6-2 is pretty bad for a good server. First serve % must have been fairly low (50-55?).

That said, it's hard to imagine Djokovic losing on his best surface or at RG (unless Stan again, unlikely...). Wimbledon is the most likely for an upset if a big server/hitter pulls a Rosol.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Looked it up (that's for the match):

1st serves in
57/100 (57 %)----------------------Much too low, should be 65+ (Djokovic 67%)
1st serve points won
35/57 (61 %)-----------------------Much too low, should be 75+ (Djkokovic 77%)
2nd serve points won
21/43 (49 %)-----------------------Not great, but good enough if you reach the above targets.

Re: 2016 Tennis Thread

Djokovic was simply unconscious in those first two sets against Fed, out-hitting him from the ground on both wings. It was like watching a pro play a junior player.

I think Novak does complete the career grand slam this year but fails at winning the calendar-year Slam. A big server on a hot day could easily upset him at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open.
