Re: The 2016 Pro Wrestling Thread

I hear there is a PPV tonight. With 1 extreme rules match. I honestly hope more people ask for their release. The product is so bad now, WWE deserves this.

Anyway here is Cody's statement:

tl;dr: worked for 10 years. got nowhere, wanted to drop stardust and go back to cody. vince, hhh and the writers wouldnt even talk to him

Spoiler:
The statement reads:

“Setting foot in the dingy ol’ Greensboro Coliseum this past Monday can only be described for me as just a whimsical moment of clarity. At this point, most folks know that I have indeed asked for my release from World Wrestling Entertainment, but it’s paramount in my mind for the fans of pro-wrestling to have some answers and not be left with questions. A many superlative can be used to describe my mentor in wrestling, but one I often forget about is…fearless. And it’s a trait I wish more of had been passed down my way.

So there I was, standing in the very same locker-room Ric Flair had dressed in before changing the wrestling/PPV(closed-circuit at the time) game forever and capturing the NWA Title at Starrcade 83′, “a Flair for the gold”; it’s sad that after once again being benched off TV that my fate in said spot was instead to be relegated to watching a monitor advertising a returning star and kicking open my tumi gear bag to find an outfit I had long outgrown and a face-paint kit. Both HHH and Vince McMahon have given me many fun and challenging opportunities in my career, and I showed my gratitude by always pushing for the best segment I could create, the most interest I could generate. They gave me the chance to train on the job with some of the most brilliant minds in our world (gentlemen like Arn Anderson and Fit Finlay). I would do this job for free, but that didn’t stop WWE from always compensating me in a generous manner. My goal in pro-wrestling has always been to win the WWE Championship (the one accolade in the game my Father never obtained), and for a decade I tried to convince both Vince and HHH that I could be their star-player, their varsity quarterback if you will, but it seems we have reached the point where neither saw that in me. I sincerely appreciate HHH’s unflinching respect for my Father, and how he has acted as a custodian of history in honoring him since his passing. He did not owe me that same respect he gave Dream, but I thought I could earn it in time. One of the last discussions we had included him telling me that “wwe is a play, and everybody has their role and needs to act it their best”. All I can think of to say to that is, “the best actors don’t want the lesser roles”. In the past 6-months I had pleaded with WWE Creative adn both of my bosses to let me roll-the-dice and once again be Cody Rhodes. I had pitched to every writer on the staff like a door-to-door salesman on “how” & “why” & “when”…and believe me, there are many of those who sought to help me (Brian James, Nick, Faz, J Russo, Dave K, JBL&Cole for letting me go wild on their YouTube show and a few others I’m sure) but for all that, both “head writers” of RAW & Smackdown (one pretending to be Brian Gewirtz and the other too busy hitting on developmental divas) continued to not return my pitches or e-mails, and in face-to-face encounters tried to big league me by pretending to be on their clearly powered-off laptops…barely willing to listen to an idea I considered beneficial to more than one talent. What’s that expression? Don’t take no for an answer…what do you do when you don’t get an answer at all?

So there I was…having done everything I could possibly do for ten years to make the most out of both large opportunities and even the half-cocked ones like “paint-up like your Brother”. Chicken shit into chicken salad became my specialty; and with those worthy opportunities afforded me…I can only hope I fully executed. I’ve made the walk down the ramp at multiple WrestleManias, and I have had a WrestleMania match cancelled while I stood at the curtain moments before my music hit. I felt like I had a bag of those brass-rings and when it came time for me to cash them in, I find I can’t do so.

Like I said, Monday was whimsical…because I felt that fearlessness in my blood, even if just for a fleeting moment. I realized that I don’t need to sell myself to those two writers captaining a broken unrecognizable system, matter a fact with the time I had put in and the body of work I presented it should have been the other way around. I realized that blood is thicker than paint, that I know who I am and what I’m capable of…I’m not Dusty Rhodes. I’m a pro-wrestler. I am proud of that. It’s been said never to leave money on the table, but no money is worth being less than you are. Ask my wife, I don’t even read the check breakdowns…this was never about the money, this was always about the moments, and I’ll be dammed if my fathers legacy is “stardust” or a series of sizzle-reels for NXT. It’s not my job to pick up his sword. It’s my privilege.

I will miss many of the soldiers in that locker-room, some who I have earned their friendship. Guys like Cesaro, Zack Ryder, Tyler Breeze, KO, Harper, Kofi, Tye, the wasteland and the NC…keep that locker-room clean and keep having a better match than you’re supposed to, I do believe the cream rises and hard work prevails. My work just needs to be elsewhere. I want to thank both fans and critics of mine alike. There is no greater responsibility than having a fan who expects a level of entertainment from you, and there’s nothing more motivating than those who buy a ticket yet find something lacking (considering the first few CAW years of my career, I always took the criticism as more of a request and I made what adjustments I could for the overall product). Again, from the BOTTOM OF MY HEART…thank you. Almost one year ago, the biggest light in my sky was ripped away from me when I lost my Father. It’s time for me to try and seek that illumination…that glow that’s still out there. This is not goodbye. There’s a whole world of film and television and the state that I might find I have a knack for(maybe I even already got an offer). As far as the future is concerned though, I’m a wrestler. So that’s what I’ll do…wrestle.”

I would shrug my shoulders (MEH) the day WWE falls flat on it's face. They have to see their faults in the product, no? Or do they simply not care and just do what THEY feel is the right way.

Such a shame for a guy like Cody to have to do this because people haven't a clue.
Maybe Stephen Amell can get him a spot on Arrow or something.

I feel like NXT has made WWE over confident lately. They have all this home grown talent that they are paying pennies for, so if a vet speaks up, they are just ignored.

This says a lot of the current WWE system. Basically, these writers have been empowered by Vince, HHH, and Steph to be dicks. One of them is probably using his power in the company to sleep with NXT girls trying to make the main roster and or current Divas trying to get a spot in the card.

I've also never understood every time a wrestlers has been released because creative doesn't have anything for them. Then what is the point of having a creative team at all then? They are supposed to come up with angles for every talent in the company. If they fail to do that, it's their fault, not the wrestlers. These writers should lose their jobs of not being creative. I've never seen a company have such a horrible business culture as WWE. It's incredibly frustrating to see TNA fuck up on a constant basis and no other company step up and be true competition.

Saxton is a tool. How the hell he couldn't remember the infamous In Your House PPV in which the lights went out and the PPV lost the feed for almost the entire night? Someone needs to stick him in front of the WWE Network to learn some of the company's history.

The Ambrose/Y2J match is dull as hell.

Good lord what a terrible finish.

AJ hits styles clash on a chair to Roman. Kick out. AJ hits him with 10 chair shots and Roman hits a spear for the pin. Come on.

When your top face is getting hit with a chair and each shot gets a yes chant, you have a problem that needs to be addressed.

I would bet a week's salary the writer Cody says is too busy trying to sleep with Divas is Michael PS Hayes. This is what happens when a company has no competition. If a wrestler doesn't like what's going on in WWE, where else can he go? TNA and ROH certainly can't compete with WWE. They either go along with whatever crap WWE feeds them or go to the house. Pro Wrestling was at it's all time best when WCW and WWE were going head to head each week.

I knew Vince would never let AJ win the title. He's proven time and time again if you aren't homegrown from the WWE, a sniff of the title is all you get. (Sting was a prime example) I guess now that Rollins is back, AJ will be sent to the mid-card where he can feud with Ziggler.

I believe the guy Cody is talking about is Ryan Ward, former NXT writer who recently got promoter to head writer on Smackdown.

Aren't every WWE PPV the same?

When was the last time they had a PPV where the announcer's table wasn't destroyed? That is getting so old.

It's probably back too the same old shit tonight on RAW. The first 15 minutes will be the Seth Rollins Show.

Why didn't they have Rollins come in and save Reign's ass and then reform the Shield ?

I'd hate to see a Super Roman vs Super Cena match. They'd just keep hitting finishers and kicking out. The damn thing would never end.

The worst part for me was it was a 'spear outta nowhere', which made for all alright visual but makes no sense as a finisher... the whole idea behind the Spear as an effective move is the explosive momentum behind it. This 'jumping in one spot' variation has none of that. It's a great counter, but a terrible finisher.

Cody would make for an awesome Booster Gold, if they were to introduce him into the DCCU. Or Kyle Rayner.

Re: The 2016 Pro Wrestling Thread

17 years ago today, on May 23rd 1999, Owen James Hart fell to his death in Kansas City, Missouri during the WWF Over the Edge 1999 pay-per-view event.

Owen Hart was in the process of being lowered via harness and grapple line into the ring from the rafters of Kemper Arena for a booked Intercontinental Championship match against The Godfather. In keeping with the Blazer's new "buffoonish superhero" character, he was to begin a dramatic entrance, being lowered to just above ring level, at which time he would act "entangled", then release himself from the safety harness and fall flat on his face for comedic effect—this necessitated the use of a quick release mechanism.

While being lowered into the ring, Hart fell 78 feet (24 m), landing chest-first on the top rope (approximately a foot from the nearest turnbuckle), throwing him into the ring.

Hart was transported to Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. While several attempts to revive him were made, he died from his injuries. The cause of death was later revealed to be internal bleeding from blunt force trauma.
The WWF management controversially chose to continue the event.

Doesn't he still have that major lisp though?

What's odd to me is that it seemed like they were building to his return as Cody, but politics are politics I guess.

Re: The 2016 Pro Wrestling Thread

Thought the ppv show was good as usual. Wrestling is wrestling and they've been putting on the same show for the last 80 years.

The IC match was great, with good spots that felt right and natural vs. the type of spots you see in a ladder match. Clearly the match of the night, although most of those dudes will probably be mid carders for life. Nice to see miz get some momentum. Looks like him and cesaro are going to feud and ko and zayn will continue their excellent streak. If wwe lets them build and simmer, the ko/Zane story could go into wrestlemania and might steal the show. They wrestle as though there is real beef, which is refreshing. A long term feud Could propel them into the spotlight (ko v. Rollins anyone?) which might actually happen since they both (kinda) came through Nxt and hHh seems to have some say as to who gets pushed.

Vaudevillians came out looking strong and have worked off some of the rust. The days of face/heel are over as the new day cheats to win and the crowd goes wild. Whose next to lose to the new day?

Jericho/Ambrose was a snooze. Ambrose just doesn't do it for me. Too small, same three moves, don't buy into the lunatic stuff. Jerichos a pro for going into those tacs...good lord.

Woman's match was a dud for as I don't really care for Charlotte. Where's Sasha and Bailey? And another interference? Guess the wwe doesn't think dana's good for anything other than someone else enforcer. Not sure if I agree since she had that good match with auska a few months back. It does seem that mat will have a story with Dana though. With Charlotte probably shifting gears to some one else there might be Two decent women's funds going on at the same time? Color me shocked if it happens.

Main event was great until the predictable too quick finish. Styles is excellent. Reigns is a good and big and clean wrestler, but comes off as a total tool. Stop stretching your mouth out so much. Can't wait for management to let him embrace his asshole heel side as he gets legit heat. With Rollins pop, you've gotta evaluate that whose good/bad front...but they won't, which does get frustrating. Wonder who styles is going to wrestle next as styles/reigns seems to be shutting down. Hopefully someone worthwhile since he's come off looking great in the past few months.

Rip Owen Hart.

Wonder how scripted the foley/Shane stuff is going to be tonight. If it's anything like the Austin/foley wrestlemania interview then it'll be shit.
