The all-inclusive 2015-16 football/futbal/fußball/voetbal/calcio/soccer thread

Since the big Euro leagues are about to start soon I thought it was time to start a new thread.

The Eredivisie and Ligue 1 begin August 7
The Premier League starts August 8
Bundesliga starts on August 14
La Liga and Serie A kick off August 22

The qualifying rounds for Big Cup have already started, god help us all.

Any interest in a fantasy league of some sort this season?

(Slightly) old news, but I wonder if anyone saw this story that potentially featured our very own DVDMagic?

On a more serious - albeit humorous in its own way - note, here's a great response to all the pantomime drama surrounding James McClean's refusal to acknowledge God Save The Queen before a West Brom friendly with Charleston Battery last week:

Not surprising - he's an Irish nationalist.

LMAO!! Yeah, I heard about that and found it just as hilairious

Thanks for thinking of me though.

Actually back in the day when I used to follow the team and attend all the games we had what we called 'Harry The Haddock' which were inflatables that we used to take to the games. But I don't believe we used them as a weapon of any kind

As for a fantasy league - I'd be down for an EPL one if anyone was to get one started.

Do any of our Bayern fans still look in this thread?

If so, what the hell is Pep going to do formation wise, now with the Vidal signing? A 3-3-3-1?

As you know, I'm not a Bayern fan or even someone who sees them play much. I do, however, know a bit about Pep and his tactics and predilections. He once famously remarked that he would play ten midfielders, if he could. I simply think he saw that Vidal was a great midfielder who possesses a lot of different talents, and wanted to sign him. I assume you've seen this:

Where will Arturo Vidal fit in at Bayern Munich?

And given Lahm's tactical flexibility, a 3-3-3-1 is one interpretation of the above formation.

Yeah, I definitely see Lahm in the midfield and Pep going with the three man defense.

I asked the question because I think that is really going to expose Bayern, especially given Vidal's propensities to wander and leave space. They were already susceptible to quick attacks down the sides, this is going to make it worse, imo. Obviously a very long season, but I also find it a little odd to see Alonso as the odd man out right now. Though I agree that the listed projected lineup is likely what we will see, save perhaps Ribery in for Costa.

The Bayern ultras must be steaming, as there are not many Germans in that line-up.

Re: The all-inclusive 2015-16 football/futbal/fußball/voetbal/calcio/soccer thread

Gross transfer spending by league, through yesterday:

(in Euros)

Premeir:
570.81
473.31 (excludes top spender, MU)

La Liga:
367.10
258.10 (excludes Valencia)

Serie A:
340.71
252.61 (Juve)

BuLi:
267.7
190.7 (Bayern)

Somewhat basic, as it doesn't factor in some obligatory purchases that began last season, or shady situations like at Valencia, but still illustrative. Interesting to see the lack of spending by BuLi clubs not named Bayern.

Pharoh - what's going on at Valencia?

I have done my best to ignore much of the silly season this year. It makes for a more enjoyable summer.

The situation with their owner, Peter Lim.

His Meriton Capital, which actually took control of Valencia, are considerably involved in third party ownership. Conveniently, and not surprisingly, many of the players they have held rights to have made their way to, wait for it, Valencia. Not only is that in and of itself shady, but the club is essentially paying their own owner for players.

Related, and furthering this, is Lim's murky and questionable relationship with Jorge Mendes. Their relationship has been variously described as being mutual confidants, a mentor-protege, or full out business partners. Having the owner of a fairly large European club to possess input, even if not explicit, into the movements of players represented by the "biggest' agent in world can't be a good thing.

Lastly, through the relationship with Mendes, Lim's Meriton Capital purchased ronaldo's image rights. He plays for madrid, but one of their biggest rivals control his licensing. I have no idea how that is allowed, but it is Spain.

The U.S. Men will play in a real game in St. Louis for the first time in over 25 years when they play a World Cup qualifier at Busch in November.

It gets a small amount, probably the amount appropriate for a league of its quality.
