MLB 2015 Week 10, June 8-14

I tweaked the poll a bit to include guys I'd heard of. The end of the first round was:

23. Alex Meyer, Washington Nationals
24. Taylor Guerrieri, Tampa Bay Rays
25. Joe Ross, San Diego Padres
26. Blake Swihart, Boston Red Sox
27. Robert Stephenson, Cincinnati Reds
28. Sean Gilmartin, Atlanta Braves
29. Joe Panik, San Francisco Giants
30. Levi Michael, Minnesota Twins
31. Mikie Mahtook, Tampa Bay Rays
32. Jake Hager, Tampa Bay Rays
33. Kevin Matthews, Texas Rangers

Great poll question. Had Fernandez not got hurt, I think he's the clear cut answer here. I think because of that, Cole has moved ahead of him. If Fernandez comes back and is as dominant as he was in the past, I believe he moves to the top again.

Re: MLB 2015 Week 10, June 8-14

I remember a fair amount of surprise that the Mariners had gone for low ceiling, high floor with Hultzen, and one reaction was that he was more likely to win 100 games than some of the others but less likely to win 200. Now he's trying to come back from serious injuries but he was pitching well before that, so who knows whether that was a good pick or not. But in general, #2 overall is not really a good place to go safe, especially when you're taking one arm over another. Going safe with a position player instead of a pitcher is a different deal.

And I didn't remember that the Dbacks got both Bauer and Bradley within a few picks of each other.

Fernandez... until his injury. So I went Sonny Gray with Cole a 1A option.

Cole for me but I'm a Pirates fan. I think Rendon could challenge him if he stays healthy. Gray and Fernandez have been pretty good.

Most of the top 10 picks have been marred by either injury (Bundy, Hultzen, Bradley) or disappointment (Bauer and Starling).

Cole has the best chance at a long career. He has all the intangibles and physical skill needed to be an ace for a long time. Fernandez has the absolute best stuff but we'll see how he returns after surgery. He may never have that wipe-out slider ever again, which was his separator against hitters.

Indians draft last year's first overall pick Brady Aiken at #17. I figured he'd go somewhere in the first but not sure where.

He should be able to break Mike Marshall's record for relief appearances in a season if he pitched lefty one day and then righty the next day.

Does he go on he DL and still be able to pitch if he injured one arm?

Rafael Soriano signs with the Cubs. I guess he got tired of sitting at home, so he dumped Boras and got a minor-league deal potentially for $4 million with incentives for another $4M.

The fan who got hit by the shattered bat in Boston last week has been upgraded to fair condition and is responsive.

No-hitter alert: A Giants pitcher (Heston) has a no-hitter through 8 innings against the Mets. Part of me wants to see him fail, since the Giants have thrown 18 no-hitters in the last few years. But I'd like some free Dominos Pizza, so I guess I'm pulling for him.

This is the low point in the season for the Mets. Just... wow.

Go Giants! That is awesome.

ETA: Chris Heston is fighting to stay in the rotation so this helped. Chris Young of KC has a no-no through 7. What are the odds of two no hitters in one night?

Good for Heston, but that strike zone was as big as a your momma joke. Good for him for exploiting it.

Blue Jays with another 9th inning come back. They've been on fire of late.

Rough to watch when he implodes (Reds after a rain delay ), but after his starts against the Astros, Braves, and now tonite I don't know how they pull him out of the rotation. Bochy and co have some tough decisions once Peavy and Cain are done with their rehabs.
